Ignoring issues of  cost, on disc DLC, needless merchandising and the fact that this can only be considered an exercise in selling toys, the Skylander's game has a great concept. Interacting with figurines in the real an virtual world sounds great to me as an adult and I imagine mind-blowing too a young child. Judging by  the comments on the game's Quick Look many Giant Bomb users also like the concept. That being said I believe this concept can be used in other franchises. Imagine your favourite franchises and childhood toys being brought to life in a game.

So my question to you guys is what other franchise would you like to see receiving the Skylander's treatment?

For me the Transformers franchise is a perfect fit. Hasbro already has experience manufacturing toys and there are many characters in the universe allowing for a variety in the figurines and in the game.  Imagine Optimus, Bumblebee, Megatron figurines.
The franchise is also really popular at the moment with kids and adults alike. Also TRANSFORMERS ARE JUST AWESOME.

What I'm imagining is a number of games based on the different series from:  1.Generation 1 transformers
                                                                                                                                                    2. Generation 2 transformers
                                                                                                                                                     3. Beast wars
                                                                                                                                                     4. Dinobots
                                                                                                                                                      5.The Michael Bay films etc.

Transformers can also transform(as the name implies). This allows for various modes in the game and the player can even physically transform the car before placing it in the portal and vice versa.Imagine putting a bumblebee figurine in car form then placing it on the portal to get Bumblebee as a car in the game. Removing the figurine then transforming it into robot form allows you to play as the transformed version of bumblebee. The Chips/tags they are using could be on different parts of the figurine depending on their state of transformation.

I've tried to make some mock-ups. Please excuse my poor Photoshop skills

    1. Place the toy in car form and it appears as a car in game.

    No Caption Provided

    No Caption Provided

2/ Transform the figure and bumblebee appears in his robot form in game.

    No Caption Provided
So that's my main choice. Other franchises i can think of are:

    1. DC Comics
    2.Marvel comics

So just to reiterate what franchises would you guys like to see get the Skylanders treatment? Figurines, portal etc.

I think it'd be cool to see a Magic the Gathering type thing. I mean, it's already collectable and ridiculously expensive. Also, I dig the fantasy style Magic has.

Probably something already based on collection like card games or action figures.  I don't want to see other video game franchises go that way.

Maybe Kamen Rider would be nice...I dunno.

In the end I still wouldn't play it unless the core game was actually good and appealing to me.

I'd thought of Lego but i couldn't figure out how the building mechanic would work. Legos to me are the building blocks, if it's just the Lego figurines then the game wouldn't interest me. Although It would be cool if you could build your own figurine and have it appear in game.

It would work just like traditional Lego but you'd need to purchase and scan each individual brick. No re-scanning the same brick.

That's a great idea. Instead of buying individual bricks imagine if 'normal' Lego bricks came with ID chips that you could input into the game if you wished. Id chips are cheap enough. That way  you can play with the Legos in the real world and if you wish you can scan the Lego brick so you can build whatever you want in the game world, a sort of Lego minecraft.

Pokemon sounds perfect for this idea. Also, maybe some sort of Marvel vs. Capcom spinoff that utilizes this, with even more characters than the ones present in the fighting games.

This is actually an amazing idea. The figures already exist so all they'd have to do is put chips in them. Then people can play the table top game online. Games Workshop still gets paid and Warhammer fans can literally play whenever they feel like it. Everybody wins.

I'd settle for an entirely new IP so long as there was actual data on the toys so you could eventually get more levels, characters etc than was on the disc.

I wonder if that's necessary. To put that much memory on the actual device just to store level data would probably be prohibitively expensive (people are already complaining about the things costing $8!)

I don't see a problem with the shipping game disc having extra content already on there that they will sell in the future. There's really no difference between that and them having DLC already produced for the game and waiting to release it until the time is right.

Skylanders was in development for a long time - a lot of that time was spent building out all of these 'extra' levels and characters so that when the game ships, all that data is already on the disc. There's nothing wrong with them wanting to charge extra for that content because that was the intention from the beginning. The entire game is delayed release in order to get all that extra stuff on there.

I think Skylanders is a great IP with interesting characters and I am excited to see where they take it.

Basically any tabletop game - HeroClix would be perfect for this kind of system, and it should just a huge throw down of all the licenses they have: DC, Marvel, Street Fighter and one or two others.

I don't really care what justifications they have for their 'on disc DLC', I only dislike it because it limits the amount of content in the game to what is already on there, putting a definite cap on what they can do with it. I guess they could eventually release a sequel that used both the old and new toys though, that could be cool.

In the end, I think Skylanders is a kids game that just doesn't have enought to it for me to get invested in it either way.

As long as they made the game much deeper and far more worthwhile, I would absolutely get into this. I love the Marvel Ultimate Alliance games, and if they could somehow tailor the general gaming experience to change up depending on the characters you introduce, that would be even cooler.

Yes. Though knowing games workshop each figure would be $20 each and you'd still have to paint it but it would be fun to scan in figures and play some turn based games online.

The entire game is delayed release in order to get all that extra stuff on there.

I think Skylanders is a great IP with interesting characters and I am excited to see where they take it.

Hmm, interesting. I guess they could still do downloadable content, as long as they warn you when you buy the toy. Probably a bit unwieldy though so you may be right. That's actually kind of a bummer, I didn't consider that.

I think a Lord of the Rings version would be kinda neat. Style it after the Return of the KIng game (but bigger/better), and be able to switch heroes at any time. Put 3 on and play co-op or with AI.

DnD would be great though. The portal would need to be pretty big to fit the character, each piece of clothing, weapons, items, daily spells, summons, etc. but it seems crazy enough to be perfect. So much money!

What's wrong with having selectable characters in a game? I'd hate to see DLC get to the point where we're actually expected to buy physical goods, just to use something already in the game.

I honestly don't understand why anyone thinks this is a good idea at all.

You guys are crazy. Why would you want to spend more money to buy things that should already be in the game. You people sadden me these days.
