Ignoring issues of cost, on disc DLC, needless merchandising and the fact that this can only be considered an exercise in selling toys, the Skylander's game has a great concept. Interacting with figurines in the real an virtual world sounds great to me as an adult and I imagine mind-blowing too a young child. Judging by the comments on the game's Quick Look many Giant Bomb users also like the concept. That being said I believe this concept can be used in other franchises. Imagine your favourite franchises and childhood toys being brought to life in a game.
So my question to you guys is what other franchise would you like to see receiving the Skylander's treatment?
For me the Transformers franchise is a perfect fit. Hasbro already has experience manufacturing toys and there are many characters in the universe allowing for a variety in the figurines and in the game. Imagine Optimus, Bumblebee, Megatron figurines.
The franchise is also really popular at the moment with kids and adults alike. Also TRANSFORMERS ARE JUST AWESOME.
What I'm imagining is a number of games based on the different series from: 1.Generation 1 transformers
2. Generation 2 transformers
3. Beast wars
4. Dinobots
5.The Michael Bay films etc.
Transformers can also transform(as the name implies). This allows for various modes in the game and the player can even physically transform the car before placing it in the portal and vice versa.Imagine putting a bumblebee figurine in car form then placing it on the portal to get Bumblebee as a car in the game. Removing the figurine then transforming it into robot form allows you to play as the transformed version of bumblebee. The Chips/tags they are using could be on different parts of the figurine depending on their state of transformation.
I've tried to make some mock-ups. Please excuse my poor Photoshop skills
1. Place the toy in car form and it appears as a car in game.
2/ Transform the figure and bumblebee appears in his robot form in game.
So that's my main choice. Other franchises i can think of are:
1. DC Comics
2.Marvel comics
