During Space Megaforce, you are made to collect up to 8 different types of weapons, each of which can be powered up to a maximum of 6 times, causing each weapon to act differently, from causing more power, to shooting extra bullets and missiles. You power up a weapon by collecting small colored spheres. Orange spheres add to a level up, but during the higher levels, it takes more Orange spheres to go up One level. There are also Green spheres that instantly level you up by a level. The 8 different weapons are obtained by collecting a circle with a number on it. From Weapon 1 to 8, the names are: Multiple Shot, Laser, Multi-Directional Shot, Missile, Circle, Power Shot, Scatter and Sprite. Smart bombs are also included in the game, killing almost everything on screen with one bomb.
During each level, the players Health is based on the his/her weapon level. The players level be 0 or lower, and when the player's ship is hit, it loses 4 levels of power, so you would need a weapon level of 5 or 6 to survive two hits from projectiles. During the game, the player also isn't damaged by hitting walls or obstacles, only enemies. Although the payer can be killed if he/she is crushed by two obstacles.
The Japanese release also has a few extra features than releases in the rest of the world. These include an actual conclusion to the story, a menu screen with more options and also with super deformed art on the menu and game over screen's background.
Known as Super Aleste in the rest of the world (Japan/Euro versions).
