Hmm i am quite interested in this, i always thought that i hated RTS games, but i loved Dawn of War 2 and was suitably GUTTED once i had completed the campaign and my hard drive failed :(
So i never played it again, although i am currently 11 hours into Chaos Rising and still loving it, seriously people, do you think i might like this game? (never played the original)

Question:
How hard is SC2 to learn and "get-into" online compared to other RTS games?
I have always sucked at RTS games all my life in every RTS franchise like dawn of war, age of empires and more, lost every match online with no effort from my opponents. Am I gonna give SC2 a shot?
Also, I think it looks like StarCraft II deserves 5/5.
@Tregard said:" My main question is does StarCraft II seem inviting to new players? I never played the first game and the extent of my experience with straight-up RTS games is just Company of Heroes (which I liked). Basically I'd like to experience a nice gradual learning curve with the single player campaign if I were to play it. "
he talks about the difficulty options and even shows the screen with the four choices. if you#re new to the genre just start off on casual and then switch to normal (which is still pretty easy cause it's ...well ..normal!)" Is this game easy to get into for someone who hasn't played any RTS's in the past, and would it be enjoyable? "
if you want a challenge play on hard and if you hate yourself, try insane (I haven't touched it yet but judging by how hard "hard" is ...insane should probably be the appropriate name :)
@topic: I like the vlog concept! if only to envy that damn framed bioshock poster :D No but seriously, you should do mor eof these (at least one follow up for each third of the game maybe)
Hello Brad! Pretty good video.
Just curious, have you played any of the custom maps yet? The main reason I am interested in Starcraft 2 is for it's modding capabilities and I've been doing a bit of research and there seems to be A LOT of minigames being made using the editor such as Whack-A-Mole, a Beat-em-up style game, and even a Pokemon style game. All of these are cool and that but i'm wondering if you know about the full capabilities of the editor and if it is possible to create much bigger mods for the game, possibly total conversions?
Thats kind of a hard one, as no doubt SC2 is going to have quite a few veterans. But what is good is that theres a 50-match practice league you can do with other people starting out. After several matches it will catergorize your skill level and match make you with similarly skilled players." Question: How hard is SC2 to learn and "get-into" online compared to other RTS games? Unfortunate that you got a lose on the last match Brad! I personally would love to see some more multiplayer videos of Brad (or the other Whiskey Media crewmembers) on the site. I don't play Starcraft 2 myself, but i really enjoy watching people play that game. Looking foward to the thursday night throwdown footage!
Nice video, I would like to see more like this of reviewers talking about their thoughts and disputes on a game they are reviewing mid way through the whole process.
I agree, Giantbomb should do more of these. Giving their personal opinions in more detail or other interest concepts.
Loving Starcraft 2 so far, never played the franchise before but my love for Warcraft is showing through.
Curse you Shoemaker your excitement for this game is contagious... now I have the limited edition winging it's way to me.
great video brad, would totally watch another one.
loving brads sexy deep voice while watching SC2 :P
Great stuff Brad, hope you decide to keep video blogging your time with the game.
Is there any way at all to switch region on battle.net free before having to purchase another copy of the game? I travel an awful lot which has meant I've got countless friends in both NA / EU playing Starcraft 2 which I'd like to be able to hook up with now and then.
I would definitely like to see a follow up, in many respects its more informative than a video review. Replacing video reviews with quicklooks and these first impressions vlogs and then doing a comprehensive written review would be great.
" I would definitely like to see a follow up, in many respects its more informative than a video review. Replacing video reviews with quicklooks and these first impressions vlogs and then doing a comprehensive written review would be great. "That sounds like perfect formula. Video reviews are all but extinct here on Giant Bomb anyway, and I would argue that they aren't even necessary.
Vlogs + Quick Looks + Written Reviews = Well-rounded post-release game coverage that no other site can touch.
I enjoyed this. Thanks, Brad. Certainly wouldn't mind seeing more, be it about Starcraft 2 or any other game. Because really, I don't come here for reviews. I can get those on any other gaming site. I come here for the more personal touch that gets put into the website. Features like this, quick looks, the bombcast, and endurance runs exemplify that.
So, how about a closer look into the custom map side of things? That scene was pretty big with Blizzard's past RTS games, and I haven't heard great things about what they've done with the interface. I find it difficult to relate with what these people are talking about as an outsider who hasn't actually seen it myself, so what are your impressions?
Cheers for the video blog, definitely do more follow up videos. I really want this game, just need a new graphics card :(
GB in a nutshell for me, as well. I liked how casual this felt, as compared to a "full review" - and felt like I got more from this nine minute chat more than a "full" four-six minute review (minus any negatives of course).I come here for the more personal touch that gets put into the website. Features like this, quick looks, the bombcast, and endurance runs exemplify that.
The full reviews still follow a formula where they hit each topic, rightfully so, but in a much more summarized and contained manner - because I imagine doing a review that is nearly ten minutes long per each game might be exhausting for both reviewer and those watching. Here, even though Brad's process through his experience was still hitting all the right notes - it felt like he paced himself more casually and commented on each part fully to his opinion's extent. I really enjoyed that - it didn't feel like ten minutes, it felt like one dude telling me why he liked SC2 and with the added bonus of showing me screens and the such on the maps.
I can imagine Brad is so stoked for this game, he's much more willing to do this - and I wouldn't expect the site to start tossing this up for every run-of-a-mill game that came there way. But it'd be great to see more of the "check in with a V-log" on the bigger games such as Halo: Reach, Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood, Dragon Age 2, etc... Or well, whatever the GB crew can do with enthusiasm.
Good stuff in any case, and it'd be great to see this as a new addition that shows why GB is different from other sites!
Could this be the rebirth of "Points!" ?
More video blogs! I always like hearing what brad has to say solely because he's so well spoken.
Q1-How do the ranks work, you said you haven't played much of the multiplayer but your silver and i'm assuming were gold before the game crash. I usually consider gold to be like the best and then silver second, if so it sounds like you hit the highest fast
Q2-Any benefit to rank?
First few missions when you are with the raiders just cruising and picking up favors and cash. No real spoilers.
