Horrific. And not the good kind of horrific.

Let me start by saying I am not a fan of this game.  You knew that already by looking at the rating, but I just want to get it out there so you're not expecting much of anything positive in here.  This game is utter shit, and I aim to show you why.

Let us go over what this game promised, shall we? This game was supposed to resurrect the dying Turok franchise and was supposed to have revolutionary AI, lifelike graphics, innovative gameplay, etc etc.  I understand that's quite a bit to promise, so I'd excuse the game's failings if it delivered on just a couple of its promises.  Alas, my hopeful optimism was misplaced.

As for the revolutionary AI, I guess it's revolutionary in that it is a step backwards in intelligence, which is a contrast to most new games, which usually attempt to improve upon past achievements. It is not uncommon to find two guards next to each other who show literally no reaction to their partner's head being completely exploded by an arrow (don't ask me how that works).  Come on generic guard number 452, I'm not asking for full squad-behavior or complex AI here, just an acknowledgment of the carnage I just wreaked on your partner.

Lifelike graphics? Well, to be honest, the environments aren't all that bad. The foliage looks good, although many times it is too thick to see through, so hiding in the foliage to stalk your prey (one of the cool features the developers promised) is pretty much useless, unless your goal is just to get killed by enemies you can't see. However, the character models are not so great. Most look like they were recycled from the N64 Turok games.  The animation is equally as disappointing.

I suppose when they said innovative gameplay, they were referring to the extremely irritating pteradactyl flying sequences peppered between the levels. Not only are the controls during these sections a little subpar, but the levels are just plain hard. Far more difficult than the rest of the game in fact, and this creates a really uneven experience, as you will easily blow through most of the first person sections and then you will find yourself wanting to break your controller during the flying levels.

Add to this a boring soundtrack and an especially stupid story and you have one really truly awful game.

The one and only redeeming factor in this game is the multiplayer, which has always been Turok's strong suit. But even this is a little underwhelming. There is one gun which is essentially a homing one-hit-kill gun that bore into your skull and kills you, so if anyone gets ahold of that, it is just a competition of who can shoot first, which honestly isn't that appealing.

Bottom line: The multiplayer is average at best, but it is still the best part of this otherwise abysmal game. Your money is better spent on just about anything else. Stay away.

Back To Basics But Acclaim Fail To Utilise Turok's Potential 0

Acclaim should give themselves a pat on the back when it comes to Turok, they did the comics justice during the late nineties: generating three outstanding exclusive Nintendo 64 titles. Turok had always great design, pushing Nintendo's 64 bit machine to it's limits, with solid adventuring elements and thrilling gunplay. Acclaim had essentially made Jurrassic Park into a first person shooter by throwing us, the players, into exotic Jungle environments all the while kicking T Rex ass in the proces...
