    Overview

Unreal Tournament, not to be confused with the 1999 game of the same name and informally known as Unreal Tournament 4, is an unreleased multiplayer-focused sci-fi fantasy first-person shooter that was in development by Epic Games for the PC, Mac, and Linux. It received multiple public alpha releases from August 13, 2014 to June 28, 2017, and was later made unplayable on January 24, 2023.

Intended to be a same name reboot and fourth main installment of the Unreal Tournament series, Unreal Tournament was built on Unreal Engine 4 and featured a crowdsourced development model where Epic would collaborate with volunteering developers, make the game's source code publicly available, and maintain an open forum for fans of the series to make suggestions. It was intended to be a free-to-play game, with an online marketplace where fans can market mods and other content.

While much of the game is similar to its previous installment, Unreal Tournament includes new gameplay mechanics (including wall-running and crouch-sliding) and two new round-based modes (the asymmetrical team objective mode Blitz and Showdown: a last team standing mode with selectable spawn points and no weapon respawns).

Development for the game was later abandoned due to focus on Fortnite and its more successful "Battle Royale" mode, and its servers were shut down on January 24, 2023.
