Why does Patrick keep talking about "the interesting benefits" of being forced to be online? There are none. All of those benefits are for multiplayer, while any negatives affect me even in single player. That's the whole problem. If I'm playing alone, by myself, splitting loot in multiplayer is not an interesting benefit to outweigh the lag I'm experiencing. Because, you know, I'm not playing multiplayer.

Just out of curiosity do you even notice your complete lack of bipartisanship? Or is the kind of thing that goes in your head "online only is stupid, and i'm right!"

You forgot to make some kind of counter argument against his argument. Instead it appears you accidentally started making personal attacks. Stop being silly.

First of all this is a MP game, so its not about the SP experience, just like LOL there is single player for learning and taking your time.

On that note:

Your character progress never gets lost, your character can't be messed up by hackers, you can seamlessly play with your friends(name another ARPG where you can be be right next to your friend within 20 seconds of log in time without any transition from the one already playing). + the loot stuff Patrick was talking about. Also extra options for buying and selling items via AH. Less pressure on your own internet since things are run on their side. There's a heap of benefits if you only stop for a second and think.

In witcher I leveled my char from 10-12 over 10 times because of the BS crashes.

@gamefreak9:Yes it is as much a single-player game as it is a multi-player game. And none of what you said is relevant to my (theoretically) offline single-player experience.

I played Diablo 1 & 2 single-player or with friends at lan parties. I want nothing to do with online item trading or players I don't know. And now I have to be thankful for less lag in my sp game? No thanks...

Maybe gamefreak9 is implying that THIS particular game is intended to be multiplayer, with the performance of single player intentionally being sacrificed (I'd say "thrown under the bus" myself). If that's the case (and even if it isn't), then great. But it's not for me, so I'm not buying.

So yeah this was awful, the only thing I wish, is that Brad would have followed the game prior to launch closely, some of the last minute changes Blizzard made are crazy, like how runes and skills are handled, 'one button trash', stuff like elective mode. I was dying to jump in and say "hey this is why!" because I think it would be useful to them.

I personally would have liked the game better 5 months ago. I would have much preferred runes as drops and not having to go back to town to sell.

I am still fascinated this game series is as popular as it is. It's incredibly repetitive.

Also not all that great to watch.

The entire reason this whole thing was even done was to combat piracy. Plain and simple. I should not have to be treated like a fucking criminal because I legitimately bought the game. In what ass-backwards world do you come from where that's perfectly fine and A-OK? It wasn't fine when UbiSoft did it and it sure as shit isn't fine now, but because it's Blizzard they're bastions of fucking hope. Gimme a goddamn break.

I paid 60 dollars for it with limited time to play games (GASP I have a life). I have every goddamn right to be pissed off. Take off the rose colored glasses, the fanboyism you possess is blinding you.

I would argue that the the online auctioning of items for real money played probably played a pretty big role as well. Also, Blizzard felt it was necessary to add an offline mode to Starcraft II, a game that has become one of the foremost competitive MP games ever. The fact that they felt this wasn't necessary for Diablo III makes no sense at all as Starcraft II is definitely a more MP focused game than Diablo III.

Also the idea that having server-side storage of your profile or saves is always a good thing is quite felonious. I've lost cloud saves on Steam a few times and yet have never ever lost a local save.

@Death_Burnout: Though the way it is now has it's benefits, forcing you to actually use your town portal to clear your inventory gives you a good excuse to have a break, put some items up for auction, or just re-evaluate your play style. I appreciate these natural breaks because of the inventory situation, even though I also really like the way Torchlight allows you to use your pet to sell items.

Also in response to other people, the loot is instanced so you're never splitting it when online it's all your loot if you can see it. in fact you get 'more' loot assuming you're playing with a friend that will recognize items you'll want and trade you them, I've basically given my co-op partners most of their gear, stuff they'd have missed in theory. Not to mention you get more enemies in co-op thus even more loot drop chances :)

I do enjoy both playing solo and co-op though, I find I enjoy the actual game more solo cause I can get into listening to the lore audio and the tons of companion audio stuff, while co-op is more about talking with your friend and working together in the encounters.

Can someone explain why this game is £44.99?!?!?

Torchlight 2 is £14.99 and comes with a giftable copy of Torchlight.

This isn't even made by the people that made Diablo 1&2 so I don't get why everyone's actually spending money with all the issues.

Path of Exile is even cheaper, namely free. I probably would've picked up Diablo 3 if there weren't such better deals out there (and if it didn't have the always online DRM ofc).

PS. I also loved the bit where he's talking about people taking days off work to play, and then states "it is in fact possible to feel empathy for people, folks".

Can you play single player offline now after day one? Sorry I didn't know that. I thought there would've been a news post about that.

Also did they greatly reduce the price day 2? Man I'd be pissed off if I'd spend £45 on it.

Yeah, I don't know where this "primarily multiplayer" vibe is coming from. Maybe they were all missing out, but all the people I knew who were playing the first 2 games never played them online. Especially the first one, where nobody I met, even in the US, had cable internet yet, and were all on dialup.

Maybe gamefreak9 is implying that THIS particular game is intended to be multiplayer, with the performance of single player intentionally being sacrificed (I'd say "thrown under the bus" myself). If that's the case (and even if it isn't), then great. But it's not for me, so I'm not buying.

Yes this particular game is being made around the coop features. Not implying anything about the old ones, I think D2 MP was probably not even intended to be as big as it was, but now they are capitalizing on it.

Explain to me how you NEVER losing character progress does not impact your SP experience. That's a pretty BIG DEAL especially for an RPG. If you want to sound rational the LEAST you can do is acknowledge irefutable arguments.

I never lost a minute of progress when I played Diablo 1 & 2. And I never had to worry about some servers working and my internet connection so I can play a single-player game.

Diablo 3 is not really different, the item trading just takes place somewhere else. There's not even pvp yet. And does that suddenly make it a multi-player game as opposed to the old Diablos? Nope!

well that's you! when I was playing I had power outages, kids kicking plugs etc. In TL it crashed once and I lost 5 hours of progress. You don't have to see advantages in your personal context, just see them for everyone.

Also I have no idea how its even possible to not lose progress in Diablo 1. You inherently ALWAYS lose progress when you die(unless the first mob you encounter after saving kills you)... if you say you never died, then you are a pro and this advantage is not for you.

Well in D3 you can be trading without being online there's an advantage for you, LOWER MAINTENANCE, made possible thanks to the AH.

Um pvp is not a requirement for a coop game, though yes it is a bummer. I imagine it will come out before I get bored of the Coop content. The open world pvp is kind of a trade off for me though, now that you can inherently trust all players not to kill you there's an extra layer of trust that kind of sucks some fun out of teaming up. I was always worried in D2 about being backstabbed and that was fun... felt more like the real world.

@gamefreak9: As I already said - I don't want to trade items, I don't want to play with random people. The online-portion is useless for me and I'm not alone. They should've put in an optional offline mode, period. It's an annoying form of DRM, nothing else.

Diablo 3 is essentially no more multiplayer-focussed than Diablo 2 was, no matter where the trading happens.
