@Branthog: DX10 didn't become what it was intended to be because of MS screwing up Vista, which happened to be the only 'supported' way to use DX10. Things are expected to turn out different with Win7/DX11.

Impressive. But what about framerates? Looking good but not getting a stable framerate is really shit.

Well put, agreed 100%. PC's have been, and always will be, the driving force of the gaming industry, and it's very good to see Codemasters taking the time to enhance the PC version with proper DX11 support.

" PC gaming is a pain, because of headaches one will get from frustration. PC gaming is fine if you can afford it, but constantly trying to upgrade, just to keep up, really sucks. I know because I tried it, not being able to play a game because something isn't compatible, then trying to find a solution, only find out that you need to buy more shit gave me aspirin ulcers.   "

pain could be quantified in different ways. I find having to get up to change disks a pain. Free mods and addons are what I find fun.

I can never see how people are finding pc gaming so expensive, if you buy a mid range graphics card you should be able to play at high specs for a couple of years. After that knowing how to optimize the graphics settings PROPERLY you could probly squeeze out another couple of years if you wanted. During this time the graphics should generally look he same. Just like how most games on a  console look mostly the same. There are out liers from developers who have optimized their Techniques. Prices are always dropping.

This comment is sort of disjointed, i have alot of opions on this stuff. Usually I don't bother responding.

That flag simply does not look real to me. It's just too bumpy - like the excessive normal mapping on Unreal Engine Faces, there's something about its faux-random surface that is all too predictable and man-made.

Fail console gamers who don't understand the significance of real time mesh tesselation in games, even though this particular implementation was rather uninspired

Thats nothing groundbreaking, its just denser game geometry with the "cloth" or "water" modifiers...the denser the geometry the more fluid it becomes (flag shows you that perfectly, low poly then a high poly model.)

"

Well, they don't really demonstrate this very well.  "Tessellation" in the DX11 context is a dynamic process that adjusts the polygon count, on the fly, based on draw distance, available resources, and so on.   The idea is that the flag's getting optimally rendered as you move closer to it so it's not wasting resources when you're far away but doesn't look like ass when you're close... steps that can be done (to some degree) programatically now, but by building them into the toolset, they make a strong version of the process available to coders at a tiny fraction of the code that was necessary before, and shunt the work awy from the CPU to the GPU.

the water effect was AWESOME. This is actually one or maybe even two steps closer to the promised land of hyperrealism in video games. :)

On the snow track, you can clearly see how it splashes. I suppose they disabled that during 0:35-0:50 to show off the ripples. That, or they included a secret superglue track.

DirectX11 is not a major leap forward like DirectX 10 (or previously 6, 7 and 9) have been, as all of you in this thread already know. 11 is a nice upgrade for 10 on the rendering side. Sound, etc ... no major changes as far as I see.

And here a summary of questions people might have, who are not familiar with DirectX (old Dudes, look away;)

  • You need a DirectX 11 videocard for your PC to run DirectX 11 effects on the hardware. DirectX 10 or 10.1 chips won't do the trick.
  • DirectX 11 is not supported by your XBOX360 - neither by a PS3 or Wii or your TV (seriously, don't laugh. I get those questions)
  • You need Windows Vista or Windows 7 (not backwards compatible with XP or older OS versions!)
  • You don't really need it. There are some nice cinematic effects as you see, but everybody can live without them and many new games will in fact be without them. The multi-threading features are supported already - yet not that many games are really using multi-threading to it's full advantage (because it's 1. hard as hell to programm and 2. limited by videogame design issues in general).
  • Hardware Tessellation is something you have since the first AGP-graphics cards. Messiah was to my knowledge the first game that shipped offering this feature to gamers. (I could be wrong).

MAN_FLANNEL: I don't know what hes talking about, but current consoles are piss poor when it comes to pixelation. Jagged edges all over the place, looks really unattractive.

This is clearly a early dx11 irritation. Most of it is just wasted on flags and water effects that can be done just as nice on dx10. All I can say is that driving games aren't really where you get the most out of these effects. Just imagine those cloth effects in a adventure games ore shooters. Personally I just want those kinds of things in the next TES game!

@Waffles13:  Consoles don't have the option of upgrading the hardware for new graphic technology. But hey Codemasters wanted to show off Dirext X11 sooner or later. And I'm pretty sure racing games are popular among PC gamers with so many racing sims available for it.
