Arguably well-implemented tbh. If a game controls bad on the Wii, it's the devs' fault. Either for not having the right options available (say a FPS without The Conduit's customisation and some less than logical design choices) or for trying to make it do things it can't (extensive use of gestures that are hard to track consistently or something like that). If the controller can't do it, don't attempt it. Be clever and do it another way. Just because it has limited motion sensing doesn't mean you have to design your game around elaborate gestures, not before M+ at least. We've seen games of all genres work well on the Wii, from sports to third or first person titles, if other developers can't do it well then it is their fault.
The only thing it's not great for is a conventional fighting game but hey, guess what, you shouldn't make a conventional fighter on it unless you want it to support the classic controller. Otherwise, make some crazy third person fighter that uses the IR sensors similar to a third person shooter, some buttons and other crazy designs, or make a very simple one in the vein of Smash Bros. Not all fighters have to be about having 100 different moves per character. Some very popular DBZ fighting/shooting hybrid mods exist for various games on PC, and work great with the usual WASD+mouse setup. Such designs could be adapted to the Wii easily.
And no, not all developers care so much about having HD, that's a myth. Maybe some do. We still have pixel artists making amazing things despite the fact they could just draw whatever in photoshop instead of struggle with pixels. We still have people using 2D instead of 3D. Low poly can be just as artistic as high poly, it's up to the artist. Just as some types of paint allow for intricate details while you use others for a more surreal representation. And most of them can't even meet PS2 standards on the Wii so they're hardly working hard too. And if they ask 50 for their end product then they should work damn hard anyway. Work isn't always fun. Etc. If they cared so much about "HD" then they'd be oh so very limited by the HD systems compared to the vast amounts of ram PCs have nowadays for example.
If you are a huge publisher making 100 man teams for a game then probably 90 of them couldn't care less about HD and are just labor workers doing the grunt work while others dictate all the choices. That's not fun, whether you do HD or not. It's harder too, why do you think there are increasing costs? Higher detail content is harder and takes longer. Making things look good with more limitations is also hard, but not as much as long as the artist has skill and talent. And it's not like they forgot that skill, it's not that long ago they had to create low poly models even for PC games, it was what, 4 years ago that normal mapping started being used for example. And even then, you still had to make good looking low poly models to then apply the normal map on without it looking off and flat at the sides. And they still need such skills for games like RTS and such.
If you're an indie dev, well, they usually can't meet graphical fidelity standards no matter what the system, so again there's no issue.
