I think that MS named the XBOX 360 and not XBOX 2 because they didn't want it to sound weak compared to the PS3. With MS image is everything. The 360 was most definitely NOT a revolution in gaming but just a natural progression as PC's had that level of graphics, sound, and networking (for free) way before the 360. If you want to talk about revolution in console gaming then talk about the Wii.
As I said before that with MS image is everything then don't expect the the next version of the xbox to be called 720 because it sound like 720p.
They should probably stop calling it an Xbox because they named their product Box with an extreme X in front, and that's about the lamest shit ever even if it suits the hardcore nerd fanbase perfectly.
Itll be XBox 4 or X4 something to that effect. They chose xbox 360 because they need to have something with a 3 in it against a playstion >> 3 <<. next logical number for the playstation will be 4 and so will it be for the xbox.

The original name for the xbox was DirectXbox for the obvious reasons but it was shortened to the Xbox.

I remember reading that they didn't want it to be called Xbox 2 because it would be seen as inferior in some weird way to PS3 (as in a generation better).
I think they will try to correct the problems of this generation of hardware failure and call it: Xbox We swear that it works this Time. Xbox WstiwtT for short.
You know why it does make sense? Because some marketing guy will say so. Nothing about the "deep overall meaning" or "symbolic undertones", because that's all bullshit.

Thats wrong. From a marketing stand point (the only true stand point in a corporate business world) the Xbox was called "360" to compete with the "Playstation 3" more importantly the "3" at the end of the title. For example "Xbox 2" sounds far inferior to "Playstation 3" especial to the casual demographic, so MS needed to design the title so that it would imply it was the third in its generation but not exactly say it. I have consulted many people involved in marketing and experts which teach at uni and they all come to this conclusion.
But lets not take away from what it truly is a exceptional piece of Marketing.
To answer you first question, i too think that "720" sounds crazy. I think that MS will be going with a worded sub title like Nintendo did. For example the Nintendo "Revolution" or "Wii" as it came to be known. So in MS's case the "Xbox, Gen" or any other cool sounding words

They released two consoles under the Xbox name...I'm pretty sure most people can correlate Microsoft with the console gaming industry by now, so just put microsoft in front of it like Nintendo is doing with their consoles. I have yet to hear a name that sounds marketable with xbox in front of it for a new microsoft console.
They should call it the XXXBOX suggesting that it is in fact the third iteration on the XBOX, while being more extreme and over the edge than any gaming console before it.

Yea, it would just look bad to have the 'Xbox 2' going up against the 'PlayStation 3'. Especially to parents who don't know anything about systems buying a present for their kids. But mark my words guys the next Xbox isn't going to be 720, it's going to be the Xbox 420. Microsoft already has the brand associated with the color green, the marketing writes itself.

I think everyone already came to that conclusion way back when it was first announced, it doensn't really require marketing consultants. Yes, they picked them name because the "Xbox 2" would have sounded inferior to the PS3, but the name was primiarly chosen to show that the console was a "revolution" in gaming, which was also the prototype name for the Wii at the time, so it fitted in well against it's two competitors.
But I agree with your other point, I don't think they're going to go with a number, I think it'll be some kind of subtitle.
I don't think we'll see it for some time anyway, it's quite obvious that it's going to be Nintendo first to announce their new console, and that will probably push Microsoft and Sony to release theirs.. but it depends on what Nintendo do. If it is just another Wii that's onpar with the 360/PS3, I doubt they'll be too bothered as we'll already have Natal and the wand by then.
I swear every time i hear the words "xbox" and "720" in the same sentence i want to go shoot my self. There will never be a device with such a stupid name, and whoever thought it up, should be beaten over and over with heavy mining equipment.
It'll be called the 900 and the first game to come out on the system will be a Tony Hawk game that the only trick is a 900 and you can do it off a curb.
I've had it with fucking numbers in the gaming industry at this stage. PS 4, Xbox 720, and Final Fantasy XIII. Graphics cards aren't any better, ATi HD 5870 and the nVidia GeForce GTX295. They've got so many cards now I don't know which is which anymore.
