Nintendo Dates And Prices The Nintendo 3DS

At its New York-based press event, Nintendo busts out all sorts of news for the new-fangled device.

The Nintendo 3DS will launch in North America on March 27, 2011 at a suggested retail price of $249.99, Nintendo announced at its New York-based press conference this morning. The handheld will debut in two colors: Aqua Blue and Cosmo Black, and will hit with several bits of pre-loaded software, including built-in augmented-reality games and an Internet browser.

Other than those key bits of news, Nintendo didn’t have too much to say about the device that we didn’t already learn in September. It’s still a handheld that can deliver glasses-less 3D. And it’s still a handheld with a DS-style set of controls, the biggest new feature of which being the 3D slider which will allow you to turn off 3D effects whenever you want. But a few interesting tidbits did sneak out!

== TEASER ==One Friends Code Rules Them All -- According to Nintendo, the 3DS will support the Friends Code system; however, codes are no longer software-dependent. That means you only have to enter your pals’ codes once to see them online across every game. Sure, it's not the best solution, but this is a step in the right direction.

How About That Launch Line-Up? -- Nintendo believes it’ll have 30 games on the shelves between launch and early June. This launch list includes PilotWings Resort, Nintendogs + Cats, Steel Diver, Dead or Alive: Dimensions, Madden NFL Pro Evolution Soccer 2011 3D, Super Street Fighter IV 3D Edition, Ridge Racer 3D Resident Evil: The Mercenaries, Star Fox 64 3DThe Sims 3, LEGO Star Wars III: The Clone Wars, Dual Pen Sports, Super Monkey Ball 3D, Thor: God of Thunder, Crush 3D, Samurai Warriors: Chronicles, Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon: Shadow Wars, Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell 3D, Combat of Giants: Dinosaurs 3D (!), Rayman 3D, and Rabbids: Travel in Time

UPDATE: Looks like we might not see the following at launch, as we first reported. Nintendo is listing The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of TimeKid Icarus Uprising Mario Kart 3DS Animal Crossing 3DS, and  Paper Mario 3DS as "in the works," suggesting that they won't make the loose launch timeframe.

Built-In Software
-- The 3DS will ship with a built-in pedometer, and an overall games activity tracker that will, according to Nintendo, award you with Mario coins that can be used in select games. Also, look forward to the Mii Maker and the device’s built-in AR games functionality, which uses cards (six come with the device) to render games based off what the 3DS’ cameras see in your environment. An Internet browser and video player were confirmed as well at today’s event.

StreetPass vs. SpotPass -- All 3DS units will be able to detect each other by something called “StreetPass.” Most commonly, this’ll be used to “instantly exchange common game data,” according to Nintendo of America's official Twitter account. The 3DS will also be able to detect 3DS specific hotspots and receive “3D videos, downloadable games, add-on content, and locations-specific special offers” via SpotPass, a built-in Internet connection seeker.

No Caption Provided

Game Demos -- If you want to get your hands on a 3DS before launch, you’ll get your chance. Nintendo plans to put over 5000 units at retail and street locations.

Backwards Compatibility -- Just in case you missed this one, the 3DS can play Nintendo DS games with their original 2D visuals. Also, as we previously reported, you'll be able to transfer your DSi and DSi XL DS Shop games to your 3DS using a service that will be provided by Nintendo after hardware launch.

Hey, that's a lot stuff! Normally, I would consider this information overload, but you’ve had a few months to mull over a 3DS purchase. With official pricing and date out now, are you still down with getting a 3DS or will you be sitting on it for a while?

No thanks. Asking way too much, it will be replaced with a redesign in no time, and there are still no games I want to play on it. Plus I don't know if the 3D will work for me being born nearly blind in my right eye and all.

Not buying a 3DS til they make it not region locked and fix the battery life.

I really want some games on it, but a 3 hour battery life combined with region coding on a portable system?  No thank you.

Wow! That IS a lot of stuff. And that list of games gives me the chubbs. I can't wait for this thing!

The first gaming platform I'll be buying at launch. When do pre-orders go up? I was afraid it would be the $300 tag that the Japanese price reflects.

Going to be smart and wait for the better 3DS in a year or two. I regret buying a launch fat DS and not waiting for the lite.

The fact they aren't making it widely known that it's region locked is a little shady.

I would drop the $250 for the 3DS right now. I want it so badly. It's a hefty chunk of money, but I think this thing is going to be ridiculously awesome.

Despite the release of the Lite, I stuck with my launch fatty until the DSi was released.  I much preferred the size and grip of the original model over the slimmed version.

$250?! Fucking right! I hope I have the cash to get this thing when it comes out, however I'm not too hard pressed for it. I know it's not that big of a deal, but I do hope they at least put a little more effort into the internet browser this time around. The past iterations have always been completely useless shit.

I definitely want one of these. A black one to boot. And hey since I would never really carry around a $250 dollar piece of equipment, it's probably not going to leave my house anyway so battery life means absolutely nothing to me.

And face shooter.

@DukeTogo: I agree, myself and a lot of other people just kinda figure that portable systems will be region free, it was a big shock when I found out about it, and a total bar im my ability to buy one (I travel too much, and spend a large part of my year living in Japan).

I'm not buying two of these buggers to play games.

Just did. Fuckin GameStop and their shipping prices. $280 is the cheapest I can get it from them. Might cancel if I can get one sent to my local Walmart once their pre-order page go up.

I'll wait for either the redesign, or the first pokemon title.   $250 is a lot for a handheld, even if it does do 3D and have gamecube esque graphics.

I think $250 is a fair initial price for this tech. I just hope the games stay at $30 dollars.

Looks like £220 - £230 for the UK (25th March) so a bit steep but not too bad. Factor in a few launch titles and the price does get a little crazy. The PSP Go launch price was similar over here (£230).

£230 is roughly $365 at the moment - so if I was paying only(!) £160 / $250 there would be no hesitation.

Still need to try it beforehand ... but I know that as soon as I do I'll get the credit card out.

Still, I'll gladly play Ocarina of Time and Rayman 2 again. Eventually.

I'd advise people to wait until 3DS Lite is released; those pokemon games can certainly tide you over as they get over the silly 3D novelty effects and start really using them for gameplay's sake. A good measure of what the other camp is preparing in PSP2 should be also taken into account.

It's more the improved brightness and screen of the lite that I wanted over the fatty DS. This time I'm guessing the second 3DS will have a better battery as an improvement so I'll wait for that.

$250 seems okay at launch; it's the low battery life that prevents me from wanting one of these.

It may be the case that I've been spoiled by the crazy battery life of the DS Lite, but it's a portable system, so battery life is important.  I'm sure I'll buy the 2nd or 3rd hardware revision of 3DS.

Still just hugely bummed they didn't throw a 2nd stick under the ABXY buttons. There's so much extra space down there! It could have had so much more potential! Oh well. Ocarina of Time before June still means I'll be buying one before then. Can't wait.

I think 250 is a lot for this but I wonder why.  It just jumps out at me as too much, but I paid 275 for my ipod touch 32gig last month, so shouldnt I feel like 250 is ok for this?  Perhaps it is the fact that the launch lineup wont have those nintendo must haves.  Namely Mario Kart and Zelda.
So I guess why i felt ok with the ipod was because i have all the music and video to go on there and games are not as expensive as they will be here and there are a ton of games out there now.

Now is as good a time as any to speak with my wallet and be the one in 50 million people to say no to a $250 price point. I'm not sold  enough on any of the games lineup to think about plopping that kind of cash down for another video game console, even a Nintendo handheld, which considering my own personal history of owning one of literally every one of their consoles up until the DSi, is saying something.

If I'm going to buy any portable platform these days, it will be in the form of a smartphone.

Yeah I don't plan on getting one right away, but I do plan on getting one. I kind of want to wait until there are more 3DS games that I want; Ocarina of Time and Animal Crossing just isn't enough for me to be all gung-ho about getting one at launch.

I'm getting one at launch. $250 is fine with me. When the PSP launched, it was a little over 200 so I have no problem with the 3DS price point. I can tell it's going to be an incredible piece of hardware!

In an era where cell phones don't even last a full day without charging, the battery life on a game system isn't a big deal to me. But I'm really having my doubts that all of those games will make it out by June. Really Nintendo? I've been burnt by your "launch line up" before.
