The Community Spotlight - 05/13/2017

After a brief hiatus thanks to ZombiePie's Selphie Selfie Marathon last weekend, we've got a stacked edition of the Spotlight ready to go this weekend.

Hello and welcome to the latest edition of the Giant Bomb Community Spotlight and I, @zombiepie, am once again honored to be your host this week. Last week I was unable to publish a Giant Bomb Community Spotlight in large part due to poor life choices on my part. As a result, this edition of the Community Spotlight is STACKED with two weeks worth of Giant Bomb community goodness. With that considered, let's jump right into the site related housekeeping.

So happy to see Vinny's COD trailer getting sort of animated. His muffled to clear voice after shellshock is pretty much perfect.

It's cool to see my threads put on from time to time when I check this, so thanks, guys. Unfortunately, it seems like no one was that interested in Outlast 2. It's a fine game and I would have suspected more people would have wanted to talk about what the heck happened in the game. There's quite a bit of ambiguity I think.

@shindig: IIRC it took something like two in-game years to put together but yeah it takes eight years to complete a single ride. D:

I spent all of my Outlast 2 ranting energy in the Steam forums. The plot is pretty damn obvious by reading files in the game, reading the comics, or simply playing the first game. But holy crap, there are always people who just don't get it when it comes to games like this.

And as much as I enjoy GB, it really sucks that they tend to avoid featuring survival horror games. Its the one fatal flaw, IMO.

Yeah, though I'd imagine it's so hard to sift through all the garbage in that genre that it puts some people off of it entirely.

Dan and some of the crew do enjoy the RE type of survival horror games, the ones with some action/RPG elements, and more than wandering around and running away and getting jumpscares. We lost most of that coverage when Scoops left, it seems.

Though I do enjoy a good survival horror game, the genre is flooded with complete crap and it may well destroy the genre's reputation, soon enough... when devs get tired of their otherwise-good game getting thrown in with all the other crap in that category, and therefore, it's largely ignored. Then, eventually as usual, it will come back again in a decade and the cycle will continue... that, at least, is my prediction of the situation, based on history of other less-than-mainstream genres.

It's not that survival horror games these days are crap; the issue is that they have declined in production. Some of the top series have simply disappeared (Silent Hill) while others have changed genres entirely (Resident Evil).

I grew up with the first generation of SH and RE, and that's what I consider to be the benchmark for survival horror gaming in terms of gameplay atmosphere and plot delivery. In my opinion, the decline of survival horror games began with the development of RE4. I recall all of the enigmatic iterations of this game that were teased long before the final product, along with the developers' claims on how it would be the most horrific game ever made. It ended up being a great game and all, but the action aspect really dominated the theme while the horror aspects were cheesy.

As we now know, one of the early versions of RE4 became Devil May Cry, which greatly defined the action horror genre at the time. Nowadays, we see a lot of big games out there that are along the same lines of DMC gameplay. These themes of classic horror elements (like the perception of Hell dating way back to Dante's Inferno) being overused and completely nerfed in these action settings have really changed how people perceive horror in video games... which really isn't all that different from how the horror genre has progressed through films since they peaked in the 1980s.

Outlast is like the "Paranormal Activity" of the survival horror genre in video games in how it is a fairly simple design, but effective; and as such, a lot of people can't stand it while many people love it. The people who don't like Outlast are those who complain about how you can't fight back, and this is because they are used to action horror games where you mow down everything in your path with machineguns to progress. But Outlast is certainly the best survival horror series out there at this time, IMO. Unlike Dead By Daylight, which I regret wasting my money on. What a godawful pile of crap that is: a boring experience where the best part is the trailers for it you can watch for free on Steam.
