I know this one hits close to you Austin, but I don't like Invisible Inc. despite being a fan of both stealth games and turn-based tactics stuff. Something about those mechanics plus the roguelike permadeath turned me off super hard after I completed it once. Same for Massive Chalice, which I found to be painfully simple and surprisingly charmless for a Double Fine game.
The writing in this game continues to be charming, in a sort of cringe-inducing way. There's a very real earnestness to everything that's presented, even when it's clearly derivative of other fiction, that makes this super interesting to watch. That goes doubly when the GBeast crew is reacting to everything that's going on.
That said, I'm not sure I agree with the people who think this is GOTY material or anything, but maybe there will be something in those last two episodes that will resonate for me. Otherwise, this is just a weirder, more deliberately mundane take on the Telltale style of episodic adventure game.
This is coming out at the right time. Fallout 4 has already fizzled for me and there isn't anything else big this year that I need to play immediately, so back to Bloodborne I go.
@baronsamedi:I totally forgot about the quest with the ant lady and the robot dude in Fallout 3 until you mentioned it. Yeah, I didn't encounter any weird stuff in 4. I thought it was more tonally homogenous with 3 but now I'm wondering if it's even further down the self-serious totem pole.
@wrathofgod: Deus Ex: Human Revolution supposedly fixed the boss battles in its Director's Cut version, though I haven't checked it out personally. I actually fired up Fallout 1 last night and was considering giving it a full replay. It's actually really short for a game of its type and is still pretty easy to get a handle on if you have any sort of experience with old RPGs. I'd recommend giving it a look. I'm still more of a Baldur's Gate guy, but Fallout 1 is alright in my book. Fallout 2 though...
Metal Gear Rising is so good. Short, maybe not as mechanically interesting as a Bayonetta or Devil May Cry, but it's ridiculous and stupid in a way that pays tribute to both the Platinum and Kojima brands of crazy.
@sparky_buzzsaw: The thing I'll say in favor of Fallout 4's characterizations is that I'm glad the Brotherhood of Steel are a bunch of technology-obsessed assholes again instead of the goody two-shoes they were in 3. I didn't do a lot of companion stuff though; the extra carrying capacity and damage resistance from Lone Wanderer were too tempting for me to resist.
I dunno, what does it say about me that I wrote a 2,000 word essay about my problems with this game but will likely put it somewhere on my GOTY list?
