Gamefly list for 2013

Same as the other lists on this topic with me. Just a way to keep track of what I've been playing, thoughts and whatnot.

List items

  • Really wanted to like this game as I found the art style rather interesting. Then started to play it, maybe it was me being a level 1 (or whatever#) vision of Death, the rather dull combat, maybe it was the health bar or it could be the non-boss fight against two giants (in dungeon after drenchfort) where I was dodging/attacking only to get completely dead in a few moments. Dodging definitely wasn't working for me many times where I was using it only to get hung up on something in the environment or not move hardly at all & pretty much still get hit. Found out especially with the drenchfort & having to watch walkthroughs on youtube to find the game mechanic not explained (rolling something & hitting RT to push it up a hill) or the golem chain attack on an explosive crystal in the next dungeon. Wasn't really a bad game, I just found it average in how the gameplay works & just not into the story to want to keep going.

  • Been REALLY wanting to play this after seeing the Hobbit. This is the game that finally got me to sit through all the Lord of the Rings films after playing it (yes one of the few that never saw them, just never liked how Tolkien handled wizards being more of a demigod vs. a normal person with arcane occult knowledge). Anyway this game is amazing for one of the lego games, the gold blocks are gone & now there's more context to the whole collectible process with the world map of quests & story missions. Highly recommended not only as a good lego game but also a good LotR game.

  • Had this on gamefly to see it after giantbomb was dragging the plans on doing a quick look forever on this. Forgot it was there after they finally did a quick look & got insanely bored with it even before the first boss to want to keep playing. Congrats to Alex for reviewing what must have been a hard game to get through.

  • Better than the first one without stepping into the multiplayer (as I figured nobody would be playing it much), while some of the gameplay & UI is a lot better this time around, the story is much better presented as one long linear trip. Definitely thought that the decepticon story had some better moments in it but after going through the story once, really didn't have the drive to go back to see the other ending or try other difficulties. Just play it on easy & see it then move on.

  • Rather good for a video game based of a great animated movie (well I liked it), definitely a rental on the 360 as the highest difficulty is the only one with an achievement tied to it so jam through it on normal-easy over a weekend & enjoy the time with it then send it back. Still prefer the lego games for this style of game (both movie related & being good for just about anyone to play).

  • I can honestly say that as someone who has played a lot of generic average fantasy RPGs (ie. Two Worlds 1 & 2), that after getting off the tutorial island, I found the combat so insanely boring that it just couldn't get me hooked on this. The small amount of the first non-tutorial island I could explore a little but met death on easy at every end whether it was some spider monster in a cave or savages on the other direction. With little ways of getting more money or better yet xp, I just didn't feel like it was enjoyable playing more of this. Glad I rented it & never bought it on a steam sale for the PC as it probably wouldn't stay installed for long.

  • Quite enjoyed this with all the Forza attention to the craft of making a great driving game with the open world of something like Test Drive Unlimited 2. After getting into the intermediate part of the championship there's only 3 things that I find annoying about the game: not being able to change the starting character dude even in the slightest (as can't skip the cutscenes), the rather limited radio selection (both stations number and number of songs) & how every time they talk about this grand party of racing/music/ect. called Horizon over the radio, I keep hearing Verizon instead of Horizon. Stellar game & will get it later on sale to finish it off & add it to the collection.

  • Fun to see some of this but after playing enough of this & the star wars version on my phone, they did a good job with the controls though just didn't have much to hook me beyond a weekend to see more of it.

  • Kind of mixed on this as it's highly flawed in the boss fights (esp. the last one with almost no room to move) as well as the fight to get Oswald to do things at times compared to the Disney charm gone to it's own twisted animatronic hell of the setting being quite entertaining. There was just too little direction on some of the side quest stuff & having to try to remember where to go with all of it through the two parts of main street. The biggest flaw I found on this was with the black pearl where you can find multiple ways to use it but if like me, where you found the first spot to put it without knowing for sure, finding that you can't undo or alter the choice just left you feeling stuck on trying to do pursue this path to the next stage. Good rental but that's about it, still trying to decide after the last boss of going to do more exploration or just sending it back.

  • As interesting as it was to see some of the new enemies & weapons, the franchise just got a bit worn at this point for me & just couldn't get far into it. Looks pretty but I still prefer Reach & ODST in terms of story & game mechanics.

  • Really enjoyed it outside of the huge amount of physical abuse Lara goes through in this game, not that it's hard to watch as much as I'd just expect just about anyone else to start drinking the islander's booze every now & then to just relax for a little while. GPS collectibles seemed quite pointless as getting them all just brought up a little bit of text & nothing else that I noticed so didn't look further into it. Glad that the tombs were just 1 puzzle things to play around with & optional. Overall quite fun to rent this & they did a good job on it so looking to see where this one goes.

  • While I liked some of it, though feel like the ye olde boardgame minigame sections were either cheating or the rules for these games were ones to just suck all the fun out. Has to be the longest game of not seeing the iconic main character that I know of, and yes I got to the first stealth mission in Boston & got tired of rerunning the poorly checkpointed mission.

  • With there being not many MMOs on the 360, this one isn't bad. I'd still say if you have a PS3 you might like this but might have more fun with DC Universe Online, for pc users definitely go with some other subscription free MMO like Guild Wars 2 or many others. Not bad shooting in this but that's about all there is, not a ton of variety after a while of levels as you start to unlock the other skills/weapons.

  • Used to like Family Guy to a certain extent when it came out & would watch it occasionally, maybe laugh a little a few rare bits in each show but never quite thought that the writing staff was that funny. After renting this game & playing a few levels of this, I'm glad I decided beforehand to turn the audio down (subtitles on) & listen to the bombcast, all I can say from the few levels of single player is that this is one of the few games where I feel really really really REALLY sad for anyone doing the QA testing on this game. Anyone playing this needs a few drinks & a few hugs as it's definitely could have maybe possibly been a decently fun game had it come out on the PS1, maybe the PS2/original Xbox. Now just feels like a clown in a tar pit trying to be funny as it sinks to it's doom with everyone cheering the clown on to sink faster.

  • Where to begin with this titanic mess? Well how about, even if you want some easy achievements, you should just skip this mess. Seems they put this game out after testing it to make sure it didn't crash 100% of the time, that's it. While the fighting & combat isn't tough, there's plenty of flaws. Race missions where you're on a linear track racing to the end has numerous spots where you might hit some obstacle & come to a complete stop, slide under something where it looks like you make it but the game just will reset you without letting you know why. Combat with gun maps are equally annoying where you can click in the left stick to see your objective on the map but it never tells you where to go to get there, so if a gate is in the way it shows you the end point of the objective not you need to get to the gate to get there. Love scenes in this are just awkward as hell as your character & the girl will be having fun fully clothed & stay that way. Textures will often not show up completely loaded, camera will move behind your character's head in narrow areas so if you are aiming a gun, the screen is pretty much a brown mess of hair trying to aim at someone in front of you. Overall just plain hard to enjoy so stay away.

  • While I enjoyed the game, I thought that especially in some of the tutorial or star labs modes that the controller wasn't as responsive in the timing (ie. hitting X,Y,A in some combination & while hitting that combination exclusively it just never progressed passed that point). As for the story & single character battle ladder parts that it holds up quite well though I recall Mortal Kombat9 having a bit more depth on the story mode on letting you play more of the characters. The story in Injustice isn't bad but there was a huge number of characters I never touched in that mode to see if I'd like playing with them, turns out Catwoman & Flash I enjoyed quite a lot over some of the ones in the story mode. Not bad though I'd still recommend Mortal Kombat 9 for people wanting to dive into a fighting game as it has an insane amount of content for the price. Slightly disappointed on this game in the alternate costumes, while they fit with the mirror universe idea, they made it damn hard to tell who was who visually during some of the mirror match fights where you were fighting the same character you picked.

  • Seems capable enough but the more I play of games with the Calypso name on it, the more I realize that either it's not going to be fun for me or just below average/bland. This one where it goes into the sadly underused vampire protagonist game, but leaves you really early not being much better than some guy with a 9mm gun when combat starts.

  • Quite fun in how it goes completely off the rails to make this a great sequel to the first two Crackdown games plus SR3. Still think the story in SR3 was a lot better but this one is well worth the time spent in it.

  • Just got this through gamefly & severely disappointed with it while agreeing completely with Jeff's review on this. I could go along with the customization options on the multiplayer but most of the modes weren't all that great, especially with Hunted where once one group gets the advanced guns, the other side will just get mowed down most of the time to just make it not fun at all. The campaign (after the mandatory install on the 360 for that content) just seemed so fake & poorly written full of just an unbelievable group of situations that it just couldn't quite make me interested to see more than a few hours of playing the campaign. Definitely skip it & just get one of the previous from Black Ops I to all the ones between that & Black Ops II and you should have more fun with those especially with the multiplayer modes.
