Crysis 2: Getting Down And Dirty In New York City

Crytek's next shooter takes a turn for the urban later this year on PC and... consoles?

There. Now that you've gotten a glimpse of what Crysis 2 looks like, let's talk a little about it. You may have figured out that the game is set in New York City, which is a far cry (ha!) from the wide-open tropical islands of Crytek's previous two games. Crytek swears that swapping in an urban jungle instead of a real one won't hamper the sort of combat sandbox gameplay the company is known for. Rather, they're saying it will simply add an aspect of verticality to that formula, since you'll be bounding up on top of skyscrapers every time you pop "maximum power."

EA and Crytek showed off a short demo of the game in (where else) New York recently, which included two short segments of combat. The first had our currently nameless, Nanosuit 2-powered hero stalking the mercs of the PMC Crynet Security near their command post on Wall Street. Since New York has been ravaged by offworld assault, Crynet has moved into town to accomplish goals Crytek isn't talking about yet. But it seems like they're counter to yours, since you have to, you know, kill them. The game's writer, novelist Richard Morgan, describes your relationship with Crynet as "volatile but changeable," so maybe you'll team up with them by the end. But from what I saw, Crynet was keen on putting a stop to the player's operations for whatever reason.

It seems like Crysis is going for a more populist approach to designing Crysis 2. Where the first game gave you four Nanosuit powers--strength, speed, stealth, and armor--this sequel is sort of min/maxing on the powers Crytek thinks the most players (especially console players) will want to use. Those are strength and stealth, which you can buff up to maximum to take enormous leaps, go invisible and sneak up on enemies, and, yes, pick them up by the throat and hurl them like ragdolls. It seems like speed and armor have been relegated to the role of supplemental powers, though this time you'll be able to upgrade your suit's power and abilities in the categories you choose. So you could end up finishing Crysis 2 with a very different Nanosuit from mine.

The demo's second segment: aliens. But not the Matrix-looking flying squid of the first Crysis. These guys are bipedal, armor-plated, and packing big otherworldly machine guns. This segment was pretty brief, with the player running around a parking lot, hiding behind cars and other cover, lobbing grenades from a launcher at these guys, who seem both agile and sturdy enough to take a lot of punishment. Stealth didn't seem terribly effective, since the first stealth kill the player tried here merely pissed off the alien he used it on, after which his cover was blown and it was on. But maybe you'll be able to upgrade your stealth to the point where it will be useful on the aliens. These guys seemed to rain down from the sky in some sort of drop pods, and at the end of this brief sequence, a heavy enemy hit the deck and used some kind of area-of-effect pulse weapon to instantly drop our hero to the ground. There's a really cool-looking video distortion effect when you go down, but that was the last I got to see of the game.

Let's not beat around the bush: the demo EA showed was running on 360, and the PC version of Crysis 2 was nowhere in sight. That's not to say the PC version isn't coming day and date with the console ones, or that it won't still be the best-looking version of the game, but there's no doubt Crytek is focusing hard on consoles. The game didn't seem to take a huge hit to image quality on the 360--look at the screenshots and you'll know it's certainly a fine-looking game--though it also wasn't the eye-popping visual revelation the first Crysis was two years ago, and the frame rate in this early build was a little dodgy. But it is early, since the game isn't coming until around the end of the year. I suspect I'll want to play it on the PC, assuming I don't need to buy a new video card for it, but I'm sure the console versions will be a fine option for people who just want to put in a disc and play.

For plenty more on Crysis 2, including Richard Morgan's comments on why most game stories are terrible and why Crytek founder Cevat Yerli really wanted to make a console game, check out this interview.

Brad, is that a typo ? Shouldn't it say "CryTek is going for...". I don't blame you though. Doing a search for "Cry" brings up 27 results in the article :)

I loved the first and Warhead, I found that if you used your imagination, utilizing your abilities in clever ingenious ways, it was super awesome running around like a one man A Team. On the flip-side, if you are a brain-dead numbskull you'd most likely consider the experience lacking. The players imagination made the game in Crysis, a player with little to no imagination, would very likely have a shit experience.

I'm really looking forward to this, they've made some very welcome changes.

My power usage in Crysis amounted to going invisible and running away when I had low health. The power system was kinda unwieldy tbh, and invisibility + regen health does make for a somewhat overpowered tactic.

Great trailer. I'll watch the interview later, but I was wondering how far into the game we'll have to get in order to play in NYC; since we have to go back and rescue Prophet.

This trailer is so effing dumb. The song is annoying as hell, and the fact that those helicopters wouldn't be flying above the skyscrapers, for the exact reason of not being shot at.... hmmm. This is classic Crysis storyline garbage.

@drewmaw:  I think they aren't flying above the city to avoid  being seen by every alien in New York.  As the aliens can fly, and kill them easily; being high up doesn't allow you to survive much longer; amd may attract the attention of one of the massive ships seen in the first game.

Wow... :) Crysis is one of my favorite games ever made (and not because of the really great graphics). This trailer may be one of the best I've ever seen. It's emotional! I never expected this. Nice :) It took a Gears of War take on trailers. Which is cool.

Trailer was pretty damn cool. Even though that woman kinda butchered "New York, New York".

Unlike, a lot of other people it seems, I absolutely loved Crysis and Warhead was no slouch either. So, I'm greatly excited to play this and the NYC setting sounds great too. Though I may be a little bias since I live here.

That "New York" cover makes me really sad that they had to go and butcher such a great classic. Hopefully Crysis 2 won't pull ANOTHER GoW2 "Mad World" trailer.

That trailer was awesome, especially the music. I thought it was going to have the slow and peaceful music get cut off when the choppers came in and replaced with some shitty metal or something, thank god it didn't.

I'm one of crysis biggest fans, alot of people knows me from various forums to post crysis on very high vs every other game and I won every battle with it. Hopefully yerli would read this, if your game doesn't look better than crysis on very high on the pc,  pc gamers are going to be very very angry and cruixify you for the graphics if there are any compromises to the texture quality or realism. So far if that trailer is for consoles, i'm noticing alot of details lacking. If you can't make a realistic or near photorealistic game anymore, which is bottlenecked by the ps3 which you keep mentioning, almost like it's the lead console, I hope it not, we will not  like it and i'm your biggest supporter, i'll be your biggest critic. We have a pc screenshot thread where half of the screenshots are from crysis games. Don't disapoint us, crysis warhead was very unimpressive texturewise and I refuse to post any screenshots of that game. DirectX10 was poorly supported where it gave crysis a more photorealistic look. It's like you figured out the forumula to making a perfect engine for crysis then you went towards art design and more linear levels. You overly used the shaders and satured the realism and didn't use enough texture which is an aweful green color, which is probally going to be grey and brown for buildings. Crysis 2 for the soilders lacks textures on their face. My point is you replicated photorealism with the first game, there is nothing higher, only lower with art design and graphical techniques saturating the game to fit on consoles.

Yeah that's my message if yerli reads this, since the site is interviewing him, maybe he might read this. I am not adressing this to console gamers who thinks it looks like the best game in the world, I have a whole thread of crysis on very high to prove otherwise. From what i'm seeing, crysis 2 won't be a benchmark for graphics like the first crysis because it's not realistic enough. Throw every last texture at us, evey last effect, we don't care, support directX 10, directX 11 fully unlike warhead, we will cover the cost just like we did with crysis upgrading our rigs for years. Price is irrelevent and since we are skeptical, maybe it's about time you show us the pc version so it would put our minds at ease we aren't getting a downgrade bottlenecked by the console version, rather we are still the lead platform for the game. Compromise nothing, I don't care about running it faster. Crysis warhead was suppose to be faster, it had smaller levels, less textures, texture and level streaming instead of loading it, which made everything twice as slow as the first game was an aweful decision. I want this game like the first crysis to be unmaxable for a few years from now because it has high resolution realistic textures like the first game. Sorry for being skeptical, i'm one of your biggest fans and I respect the first crysis game as being the perfect game graphically and gameplay and the scale of the levels.

The music in the trailer was just awful. Or rather the voice used was.

Having not been impressed by Crysis or Warhead (gameplay wise) I can't say I'm particularly looking forward to this. However I do enjoy open approach action. I'll have to see gameplay first I guess. I'm trying to hold off on buying a new video card as long as I can, but mine are already starting to age.

edit: Free Radical as the multiplayer studio is a great decision. Similar to how MoH multiplayer being made by DICE.

Also the writer seems to be really aware of the current situation. Fuck Orson Scott Card and his bandwagoning. This dude is actually into it.

The writer, Richard Morgan, hits the neail on the head when he comments on what is wrong with games today. Sometimes it takes a person to be able to look in from outside, and to apply their own logic, to enable us to 'get it'.

No mate, you're just wrong and also kinda snarky for no reason.  Did someone take a dump in your breakfast bran? Crysis installed in minutes for me on Steam and seeing as CryEngine 3 is a lot more optimised, especially in the map streaming aspects, I think could well be something almost instantaneous for the console versions or the very least the 360 version.
