Dead Space 2 Announced

More Isaac Clarke, more Necromorphs, more bloody dismemberment.

 Like this, only moreso!
 Like this, only moreso!
After weeks of teasers and leaked magazine scans, EA has officially confirmed development of Dead Space 2 today, again proving that the video game business can't keep a secret to save its life. In development at Visceral Games, presumably by the same team responsible for the original, Dead Space 2 will again put you in the magnetic boots of space-miner Isaac Clarke as he faces off with the still extremely gross Necromorph threat.

In addition to revealing that both Clarke and the Necromorphs survived the end of Dead Space, the press release suggests that you'll get more of what was great about it in Dead Space 2--cutting up gnarly monsters with brutal, futuristic weapons, zero-G sequences, jump scares, and crazy plot twists--in a new environment that is simultaneously more expansive and more cramped.

It also offers a little tease for something new with the line that "Survival isn't the only thing on Isaac's mind in Dead Space 2 – this time, he calls the shots." Pardon my naked speculation here, but my gut reaction is that this could have something to do with the addition of a multiplayer mode, though I also fear that it could mean some kind of squad-based or real-time-strategy-style gameplay will be introduced to the main story. Or maybe it just means that Isaac Clarke will be more of a bad-ass. As if that's possible!

Dead Space 2 is being developed for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and PC. No release date is being given for Dead Space 2, though the smart money is on a holiday 2010 release. For those who enjoy the flagrantly manufactured language of a high-grade press release, here's the announcement in its entirety.

UPDATE: When asked about Dead Space 2, an anonymous, inside source told us, and I quote:

Dead Space 2 is gonna tear your face off. This time Isaac is on the offensive.

Make of that what you will. And now, the previously promised press release!

EA BRINGS THE TERROR TO SPACE IN DEAD SPACE 2

Sequel to Award-Winning Horror Game Delivers Intense, Personal Saga that Sends
Chills through Deep Space

Redwood City, CA – December 7, 2009 – Visceral Games, an Electronic Arts Inc. (NASDAQ: ERTS) studio announced today that the award-winning Dead Space™ franchise will continue to frighten gamers with its stunning sequel, Dead Space 2. Hero Isaac Clarke returns for another heart-pounding adventure, taking the fight to the Necromorphs in this thrilling action-horror experience. New tools to gruesomely slice and dismember the Necromorphs complement Isaac's signature Plasma Cutter, empowering him as he meets new characters, explores epic Zero-G environments, and fights against a relentless necromorph onslaught.  Survival isn't the only thing on Isaac's mind inDead Space 2 – this time, he calls the shots.

“Like so many gamers worldwide, we love the Dead Space franchise and are very excited to announce a new game in the series,” said Nick Earl, Senior VP and Group General Manager at EA. “Visceral Games is quickly becoming known for delivering high-quality, action-packed games. Dead Space 2 is on target to deliver a jaw-dropping experience gamers won’t soon forget.”

“We’re thrilled to jump back into the series, making the next chapter in Isaac’s journey. The infection continues to spread throughout space and our hero Isaac Clarke is the only person able to contain it. There are still loads of necromorphs that need killing!” said Steve Papoutsis, Executive Producer of Dead Space 2. “In Dead Space 2, not everything is exactly as it seems. Expect plot twists that will surprise you and a huge cast of twisted, disgusting monsters that are sure to scare the daylights out of you.”

Originally launched in 2008, Dead Space quickly became one of EA’s top rated wholly-owned intellectual properties. With close to 100 industry awards and an average critic score of 89*, Dead Space became a hit with horror and videogame fans worldwide. In 2009, EA launched Dead Space Extraction, a prequel to the original Dead Space that expanded the fiction and brought the franchise to a new audience base.

Dead Space 2 is being developed for the PlayStation®3 computer entertainment system, the Xbox 360® video game and entertainment system and on PC. This product has not yet rated by ESRB or PEGI. Wow, I was not expecting Issac to be back for the sequel. I was pretty sure he was dead at the end of Dead Space.

I hate to be Isaac Clarke. I really do. Just when you thought you were done with those bloody necromorphs. But yeah I heard about mulitplayer in this. I'm pretty skeptical but it's too early to say. Should be interesting all the same.

I hope it gets rid of that "exit train, go pick up ID card, return to train" level design the first one had.

Dead Space was my game of the year last year and I am eagerly anticipating this.

Little worried about that "Isaac is calling the shots" bit, though. Being in a position of power isn't exactly "Scary." Then again the last game kept me on nerves despite me feeling pretty awesome in that "I'm not a professional bad-ass, but I'm going to stomp your alien-zombie face in like a boss" way.

Dead Space 1 was a game about a dude alone in space with crazy alien zombie things. I'm not sure they can top that.

Great, loved the first game. I just hope they don't change the formula too much, I'm happy if it simply provides a solid single player experience, anything else doesn't interest me as much. A good survival mode would be nice though.

I still don't think EA need to be making sequels to new IP that only sells ~1.5 million, but whatevs.

How do you make a sequel feel fresh enough to even hit those kind of numbers again?  Surely just making another spaceship crawler isn't going to get it done, right?

It certainly seemed like he might have died, but I had my hopes he would survive. It would have been lame (but, granted, very typical of the horror genre) to have him die at the end after all of the craziness he survived. I'm glad to see he made it, though we'll hafta wait and see if the sequel is as good as the first. Please don't make this multiplayer focused like Bioshock 2 seems to be, EA. Please? *begs*

I'm sure Isaac is still going to fight solo.
He might have some cronies to boss around though, but I bet they'll do their own thing like the supporting cast of DS1.
Calling the shots is going to be a challenge for someone who doesn't talk.
Moreso than Dead Space? Bad ass-er if possible? Yeah!

Wootacular!

I am turned off by marketing's increasing use of "launching" games, rather than "releasing" them. At this point, how could you launch a Madden game? It's established IP.   Is there some kind of publicity budget metric that draws the line definitively between Tony Hawk RIDE and Halo 3?
"Fly and be free little bird" versus  "GUUUAAAGGGGHHHGGHHHALLOOOZZDEWXTREME"
Because when I play Dead Space: Extraction, I hear chirping.

Also, hey there grammatically-proper-capitalizations-of-necromorph. Nice to see ya.

*sigh* Metacritic really does mean THAT much to them.

Nonetheless, Dead Space 2 is bound to be great considering the quality of the first. I am stoked for this and I am sure it won't be a disappointment.

This pretty much.

Dead Space doesn't need deathmatch. Give us a similar but improved single player experience and throw in a co-op survival mode with it's own side story or something. I like the hint at Issac being more badass this time around (that's what they meant by saying he's calling the shots, right?). Show those necromorph abominations who's boss!

I took the  "Survival isn't the only thing on Isaac's mind in Dead Space 2 – this time, he calls the shots."  to mean that maybe its Isaac will be actively hunting the necromorphs instead of just trying to escape from them.

I'm glad Issac didn't die at the end of Dead Space. Once I got to the ending my thoughts were roughly "After all the necromorphs I've mashed A to throw off after they've jumped Issac, if this final god damn one kills him...."

The idea of Multiplayer would only be cool if it was co-op (Like Resident Evil 5). an actual Death Match Type multiplayer would be terrible (again like Resident Evil 5).

I dunno, I thought the first one by it's self  was good enough and the ending kept you guessing. But not anymore I suppose... Game companies have to make a living I guess, I just hope the story is good.

While the phrase "calls the shots" in no way inspires confidence in me towards this game, I don't really see how this implies mutliplayer, unless you're talking co-op. I could live with that, but not a competitive mode, which is usually what I think of whenever someone says multiplayer

Awesome. After the disastrous sales of Dead Space and Mirror's Edge, I was afraid that EA would axe the new IPs and concentrate on grinding out sequels for older games. It's good to see EA expanding on what could have been an incredible game with Mirror's Edge and making more of a good thing with Dead Space.
