Dead Space: One More Thing...

The end-game unlocks in Dead Space are nice, but they aren't much good if you can't access them on harder difficulties. Can we get a patch up in here?

Limited access to this rude-lookin' suit.
Limited access to this rude-lookin' suit.
Dead Space impressed the heck out of me, so much that I gave it the highest possible score on our scale. But one thing that I noticed right after finishing the game really stuck in my craw. If you don't want to know absolutely anything about the items that unlock after you beat the game, stop reading now, but the rest of this story doesn't address the game's plot or anything.

OK, so after the credits roll, you get a big stack of unlocked gear, logs, and other goodies. The two most gameplay-relevant ones are the level 6 "military" suit--better than anything available the first time you play through the game--and 50,000 credits to spend at the store. Would help soften the challenge of the "impossible" difficulty level that also unlocks, no?

No, actually, because you can only access the new gear by loading your game-completed save from your previous run, which forces you to play again on the same difficulty. But what's the point of getting a better suit and only using it on a difficulty level you already proved you could beat without the suit? Dead Space is so good I actually want to play through it again--a rare occasion for a game you've reviewed, let me tell you--but not being able to simultaneously amp up the challenge level and also use the unlocked goodies is really putting a damper on my desire to to restart the game. Why not include the option for people who want it? People who don't want it could certainly still start a fresh game on impossible mode without using the enhancements. But not giving the option at all just seems silly.

Giant Bomb friendly user SonicFire has posted a guide detailing how you can use a glitch to access the military suit in the impossible mode, but it requires you to play through the entire game a second time on your initial difficulty before you can do it. Hardly ideal.

The issue bugged me when I polished off the game, but with all the other reviews that need writing around here, I hadn't had a chance to return to Dead Space. But I've seen enough complaints on various forums that I know I'm not alone in being frustrated with this seemingly minor design call. Hey EA, any chance of a post-release fix for this unfortunate oddity?

I agree that this seems like a minor oversight on their part.  I can see why you unlock the suit after clearing it, and you can go do a speedrun with your upgrades later on.  Did RE4 let you carry your stuff over into a new game with harder difficulty?  I'm thinking yes, but it's been a few years since I've played that game.

The other argument is, and it's got corporate BS all over it, you can BUY the Scorpion suit or use the corresponding console suit on any difficulty setting.  While it's not the same as carrying over your upgraded weapons, it helps quite a bit.  And isn't the lvl 6 suit still lower than those?

I can see them going back and patching it in, maybe add a little bonus content as well like a side mission or a new weapon.

i agree, this is quite a bummer. i intended to do an impossible mode run from scratch but it would be nice to start with sweet gear while you figure out the main difficulty differences

For the record, Resident Evil 4 didn't let you transfer your gear over to a new difficulty either.

You guys are only complaining because there's an achievement for beating impossible mode. Which just isn't fair. No game has ever let you move your upgraded character to a higher level.

It's an odd choice for them to have made, looks wise I'm not sure I prefer the L6 over the PS3 coloured suit but I'm playing through with it so max out those weapon upgrades. By the time I'm finished it'll be patched and I can consider impossible mode. And maybe finding Peng.

Yeah that's kind of ridiculas, they should let you carry your stuff over to hard mode, like in RE4.

Brad is a fucking pussy. That stuff never fucking works like that. When the hell did you ever have a game that ever worked like that? You beat the fucking game on normal mode and unlocked that extra crap on normal mode. What makes you think you deserve to unlock it on Impossible mode? This is almost as infuriating as the completely crazy reviews this game has been getting. It's Resident Evil 4 in space you stupid fucks.

What gets me even more is that Brad said the controls were better than Gears of War which is totally fucking crazy and makes me think he hasn't played Gears of War. They are both third person shooters but that doesn't mean they control the same. This game plays exactly like Resident Evil 4. Only you can strafe AND move while aiming. Otherwise it's RE4 in space. Which is hardly fucking original... I beat the game and have about 800 Gamerpoints... I'll be playing it through again soon to get the remaining points but I can't say that the game blew me away.

Just like user Artie said above and he's totally correct, this whole unlock crap for your replay save on the same difficulty was even the same in RE4! They have never let you do that. Brad's fucking stupid. I can't believe this passes as news.

Even worse I can't believe a copy of a game that's over 3 years old got a 5 star rating... Oh yeah of course... It's in SPACE with SPACE ZOMBIES that makes it totally different than RE4...

I think I thoroughly explained in the story why I consider this a poor choice, and it isn't related to achievements. I died maybe twice playing through on medium--I'd like a better challenge.

Regarding RE: Just because a past game did it that way, or it's never been done another way before, it shouldn't be done now? Don't get mired in tradition.

This does seem like a bit of a cop out. I always loved in, say, Devil May Cry 3, going through the harder difficulties with all my upgraded weapons and stats, and though still getting my ass kicked at least having SOME advantage.

Only being able to play through that same manageable-in-the-first-place difficulty with all your pimped out shit just sounds boring.

While MangyForestCat is being a bit of a dick, I agree with his initial point.  You beat normal, you get to screw around in normal.  You beat hard, you get to screw around in hard.  They feel that the super suit is game-breaking, so they restrict it to difficulties you've already beaten.  It's the same thing you have with the bandanna, stealth camo, tanegashima, etc in MGS.

Yeah. I am currently on my 2nd run through on Hard. The first time was insane, but I can tell you my second trip is a lot more fun. I'm not stressing about ammo or health as I can stasis most enemies and hack em down. Not as much dying. I will agree that I would have rather started my 2nd game in impossible mode if that was an option. Because now I have to play a 3rd time if I want all the trophies.
My biggest gripe is they should have gave the suit an upgradable melee attack, like adding a blade or plasma cutters.

I don't really have a problem with this. I mean, making Hard mode easier due to better equipment that shouldn't be available from the start kinda defeats the point of Hard mode.

I think the idea of New Game+ is to make you feel like a badass as you tear through enemies that you once feared your first time through the game.

I think that since Impossible mode is a unlockable mode just like the gear then you should atleast have the option to have you unlock gear whit you. And if they really think that would give you an unfear edge(making it much easyer then it would be whitout the unlock gear) then just disable  the achievement if you use your unlock gear. That would make it that ppl that did impossible whitout the gear and cash can brag a bit more then those who did use them.

And also i dont belive that Brad is an achevement whore like Jeff and Ryan so that might not be the reason for a second playthrough.

Mangy, just wondering, have you even read the review? Because it sure doesn't seem like it. First off, you say that Brad says the controls were better than Gears of War, which is NOWHERE to be seen in the review. Also, in the review, Brad recognizes pretty clearly that Dead Space is nothing new or original. But, as Brad says and I happen to agree with, Dead Space takes the elements of a bunch of great games and combines them into one incredible package. So, once again I ask you to please...shut the fuck up.

haha, I like the people that don't understand why new sweet games are obviously inspired by other past sweet games... give me a break.

also, unlockable stuff after beating a game never works like it should.  which is a crying shame, but maybe someday a game will get it right, and then consecutive games that are good will also get it right............... but I guess then these new games would be ineligible for a 5 star review as it copied something amazing from another game.... by this twisted logic.

Having played through the game quite a few times already and upgraded the majority of my weapons and gear all the way, I can say that it's an utter disappointment that we can't carry the gear over somewhere.  Anyone who wants to hate on the idea that we'd like to carry the gear over to a new difficulty must be forgetting one thing:  we're asking for HIGHER DIFFICULTY.  That's not to say that EA couldn't very well offer a difficulty past impossible for us to play on with the gear we unlocked.

And moreover, what IS the point of unlocking powerful stuff if you are stuck on the same difficulty?  I'm sorry, but Brad has a valid point.

And you know what else?  The game offers achievements.  So fucking what?  Yeah, I wanna get my 150G from beating Impossible mode.  I'm not asking for an easy ride at all, and I don't think anyone else is, either (especially Brad).  However, if you haven't stepped into Impossible mode yet...it's pretty brutal, and especially when you have a Level 1 suit that is basically designed for Medium difficulty.

Even if we could take the Level 6 suit over and only take one upgraded gun over, that would be better than starting it from scratch on Impossible.  Even with a fully upgraded weapon in your inventory, it would take a ton of ammo to down anything.

And Mangy...since when did Giant Bomb have a NEWS page?  I knew they had a blog...which typically means they are free to write about what they want in there.  I don't see a news page anywhere, though.  If you are looking for a boring site, might I suggest going somewhere else?

Moreover, coming on here and claiming you are rockin' 900 points from it on one playthrough...yeah...bullshit, sir.  You cannot fully upgrade your weapons and armor by that point, you cannot get 50% on hull and slug boss if you don't already know about it, and you can't beat impossible the first time through.  That, alone, is about 200 points or so.  My first playthrough was only worth about 640.

The most I can say for anyone hating on this is to shut the fuck up...and for that, I'd suggest continuing your usual cocksucking.

In order to put the final nail in Mangy's trolling coffin, here's his gamercard.  685 is an okay score, but nowhere near 900, sir.  Way to be a douche bag, douche bag.

I fully agree with Brad on this one.  This isn't like we're asking for the Lazer Gun from Silent Hill: Homecoming, which made Hard mode so incredibly easy.  This game seems to be about seamless transitions.  I wouldn't mind starting out with the character I've spent so much time working on.

Another annoying issue in an otherwise awesome game is the fact that if you use either of the two downloadable suits (from XBL atleast on the 360 version) you cannot equip -any- other suits you find in the game, including the military suit. It grays them all out automatically, and if you try to remove the content from your HD you will not even be able to load the saves that are wearing it.

Patch. Please.

I read about this issue a lot and hear it from friends who have completed Dead Space, so I'm with you Brad in saying you're definitely not the only one. I have yet to play DS at all, but the inability to take what I've earned and apply it to a harder difficulty definitely hurts replay value. Especially since it appears Dead Space encourages more than one run. Given how anti-used game sales EA appears to be (that story involving Burnout Paradise and free DLC to encourage people not to trade it in), I'd actually be quite surprised if they didn't address this small issue. Especially considering how it's pretty much a staple of every review I've read and is an active topic on quite a few forums.

Valid point. I don't get the impression the military suit is anywhere near as powerful as those items, though. It's another incremental bump in armor rating and (maybe) more inventory slots, no? Hardly a game-changer. I just wanted to use it because it looks cool and I already stared at Isaac in the old suits for an entire playthrough.

I'm thiking about the Devil May Cry games. I know some people are good enough to beat DanteMustDie mode with a fresh start. I know I'm not, and I'm pretty sure it's the game intention that the hardest difficulty should be taken with everything you can have at your arsenal. So, unlike some people are claiming, other games do incorporate unlockables and gear to higher difficulty levels.

Also, if the downloadable content are indeed more powerful the the suits you can get in game, and they are available in the impossible from the get go, then this is definitely bullshit to get us to buy the downloadable contet.

What? That is an absurd thing to hear. Not the fact that EA made a poor design choice (big surprise) but the fact that Brad actually expects EA to do something like this. Is brad saying this because he got caught with egg on his face after his perfect score? I have a million critiques like this for single every game I play. The only way to get this stuff fixed is to mod the games yourself. Wow.

Which seems impossible nowadays without hacking due to the console interface scheme infecting the PC platform. Talk about devolution.

I agree with Brad that we shouldn't be mired in tradition. Making decisions based on tradition is dumb and hinders progress and innovation. That said, I think developers do this for legitimate reasons, and I don't see anything wrong with it. They want each difficultly to be self-contained and experienced the way they designed it at least once, and then they let you carry over your old stuff and unlock new stuff. Although, I wouldn't be upset if this were not the case.

Dudes.... Brad is awesome, stfu!

I agree that you should simply be given a choice if youd like to import your unlocked gear etc from a beaten difficulty setting into a new one... This is a legitimate concern, and something I wish developers considered more often.

"What the fuck does egg on your face even mean?"

It means you've had an accident at breakfast during the process of cooking an omelet or perhaps a nice pan full of scrambled eggs and you've been hit with randomly flying yolk shrapnel that you fail to notice and walk around all day with it on your forehead until some tells you that you have "Egg. On your Face." or they may also say "The yolks on you."

Dead Space is great.

Also, having your unlocks carry into another difficulty would completely throw off the balance of the latter difficulties.  Man up.

See, I agree with Vaxadrin, I love Brad as much as anyone here... I'm just noting the fact that he's a pussy for complaining about it.

Those of you who feel like they need to come to Brad's defense need to stop taking their man-crush with him so seriously.
Specially Milkman who seems to have the hugest hard-on for Brad, either that or he's Brad's internet bodyguard...
