Giant Bomb's Game of the Year 2010: Day Five

Prepare to usher in the new year with celebrity guest Nolan North and a whole slew of awards!

Don't agree with our choices? Then be sure and listen to our Day Five Deliberations Podcast to make yourself even angrier!

The Northies - Best Performance By Nolan North

Mafia II

It's happened, people. The day has finally come. It's not enough forNolan North to play the leading man in one beloved franchise after another. He wasn't happy when you were merely hearing his voice in every single game you ever bought, ever. One role per game? Forget about it.

Let history remember this as the year when the Nolan-headed serpent began to devour its own tail, when video game voiceovers folded in on themselves and reality itself began to unravel. We present to you: Nolan North conversing with... Nolan North.

And the Northie goes to... Mafia II. What else could it be? Our dear Nolan certainly made the rounds in a long list of noteworthy titles this year, but as we so often say around here, it's not the best Nolan but the most Nolan that truly matters.

Runners-up: Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood, Army of Two: The 40th Day, Tron: Evolution, Call of Duty: Black Ops, Spider-Man: Shattered Dimensions, Singularity, Alpha Protocol, Final Fantasy XIII, Dark Void, Transformers: War for Cybertron, Trauma Team

Best Competitive Multiplayer

StarCraft II: Wings of Liberty

At first glance, StarCraft II looks an awful lot like StarCraft I, with the same three factions mining the same minerals and vespene gas toward the same end of wiping each other off the map. But it's exactly that time-tested core RTS gameplay that makes this the best multiplayer game of the year. After more than a decade of intensely high-level competitive play, the most essential elements that make StarCraft what it is are practically etched in stone, so instead of trying to fix something that wasn't broken, Blizzard set about subtly refining, streamlining, and automating some of the more mechanical and menial aspects of playing StarCraft, making it accessible to players of any skill level.

And what a range of skill levels this game supports. StarCraft II has already spawned the most lucrative and widely publicized professional gaming tournament in history, with top players mastering ludicrously complex strategies in a game so mechanically dense it seems to defy mastery in the first place. For the mere mortals among us, the newly redesigned Battle.net does a great job of keeping you playing against opponents of like skill levels, so if you just want to turtle in your base and make hydras for 10 minutes before any attacking goes down, you can find others who play the same way. And despite adding a host of interesting new units, Blizzard maintained that finely honed three-way balance between terran, zerg, and protoss--no small feat in itself--ensuring that a whole lot of people will be playing StarCraft II online for a long, long time.

Runners-up: Call of Duty: Black Ops, Halo: Reach

Best Ending

Red Dead Redemption

It is arguably more challenging to convey a cohesive narrative in games than most other mediums--games are defined by user interaction, and the protagonist's free will (or at least its illusion) can throw a real monkey-wrench in the storyteller's designs. As difficult as effectively telling a simple story, wrapping up the loose ends and finding a satisfying conclusion is a feat that storytellers in all formats struggle with, and this is a huge part of what makes Red Dead Redemption such an accomplishment. Rockstar San Diego crafted a rich, detailed world, filled it with compelling, compromised characters, and found a satisfying arc for its lead character.

But that ending. That thrilling gut-punch of an ending. Righteous redemption and bitter, white-hot revenge all swirling together for an ending that felt earned. Games simply aren't made the way Red Dead Redemption was, and its conclusion wouldn't have worked had it not been for the specific way that the game repeatedly shifts gears leading up to the real ending. Coincidentally, Red Dead Redemption would also have won here had this been the award for Most Endings, with the way it ends, and then it ends again, and then it ends. It's maybe one of the best game endings, ever, which makes it an easy win for Best Ending in 2010.

Runners-up:Bayonetta, StarCraft II: Wings of Liberty

The "Take a Break" Award

Final Fantasy

We're hard-pressed to even define what the name "Final Fantasy" encompasses at this point, but for the purpose of this category let's constrain it to the games that are merely called "Final Fantasy" with a Roman numeral afterward. This year saw the release of the thirteenth and fourteenth installments in that core series; the former was a beautifully produced, underwhelming adherent to outdated JRPG conventions, while the latter was by all accounts a runaway MMO catastrophe so poorly received that Square Enix relieved its stewards of their jobs in the hope of remaking it into something people would actually want to pay a monthly fee to play. It wasn't a great year for games called Final Fantasy, so it's time to take a pause and think hard about what it was that made this series so popular in the first place.

Look, all of us here at Giant Bomb have fond memories of various entries in the Final Fantasy series, but most of those entries came out well over a decade ago. A lot has happened, and continues to happen, in the ongoing evolution of game design since then, but it's starting to seem like Final Fantasy is too burdened by its own lavish production values and momentous legacy to keep up with those modern conventions. What's the answer here? We can't definitively say. Maybe it's time to ditch the expensive full-motion video. Maybe it's time to let a Western studio take a crack at this hallowed franchise. Maybe... no, it's definitely time to drop the Roman numerals and come up with a more creative way to name all these games. Whatever it takes, we just want Final Fantasy to surprise and excite us again, but only after it takes some time off to regroup and come back strong.

Runners-up: Guitar Hero, WWE SmackDown!

Best PlayStation 3-Only Game

God of War III

Kratos pulls no punches in this, his PlayStation 3 debut, which also wraps up the mad Spartan's trilogy of heavenly murder with all the inventive blood lust and blinding rage players have come to expect from the franchise. God of War III is a God of War game through and through, and while it's a franchise whose feel is oft imitated, this was a vivid reminder that no one knows how to sadistically murder a god like Kratos.

Visually stunning, with a sense of scale that few games have the nerve to play with and the kind of finesse that reminds you of what's running under the hood, God of War III makes good on much of the promise of its franchise and its platform, making it our choice for Best PlayStation 3-Only Game for 2010.

Runners-up:  Heavy Rain,

Sports Champions

I agree with the Final Fantasy stuff. to an extent. 13 wasn't a bad game by any means. But it's overshadowed by the whole "Fabula Nova Crystallis"   saga bullshit really puts a damper on things.

Then again...I'm REALLY excited for Duodecim

Finally GOW3 praise, this ought to stop the whining. On a side-note, I personnaly would hgave put BBC2 as runner up to Best multiplayer, but NOBODY on the crew played it.

Final Fantasy? Seriously? I agree that FF14 is a terrible game on all accounts, but FF13 is considered legitimately good/great with a metacritic score above 8. The spin-off games like Dissidia or Crisis Core were equally well received. The last numbered entry into the series lies 3 years back, a time span in which, for instance, 3 separate Halo games were released. Also, like how they argument that Harry Potter shouldn't be on the list because that's different teams, but Final Fantasy loses its identity because it's made by different people.

I have no problems with Giant Bomb simply not being into the series or JRPGs in general, but Final Fantasy is certainly not a franchise that pumps out sequel after sequel, year after year  with all of them being the same game. In fact what most people bitch about is that it's not the same game. There are a ton of other, better candidates to chose from.

I'm guessing no one at Giant Bomb played enough PSP games this year to choose a GOTY for that platform? A shame if so, because this was possibly the strongest year for the PSP.

Complaining about the naming convention seems like the most vain thing one could complain about in regards to the Final Fantasy series.

While I agree that the Final Fantasy series should seriously take a break, I strongly disagree that the franchise should be handed to a Western developer just because of the reasons the GB crew has said about it. I don't believe in stupid philosophies like "Western developers suck and they're just going to taint the 'JRPG' formula and/or treat it as one big joke," or "Japanese game development is dead and they should stop making games and learn from the West." I just think that they should at least take a breather and just think hard about gaming conventions that still work today and the ones that don’t anymore.

I also think for development, Japanese should stay Japanese, and for the West, vice versa. I mean, look at Bayonetta; sure there are some Western elements aesthetically in that game, but it’s Japanese at its core. If Japanese devs took on the catering to the West philosophy, we’d probably end up with more games like Quantum Theory. Ugh…

Alpha Protocol got hosed in the Northies! Recount! Recount!

But seriously, busted as that game is in some pretty significant ways, Steven Heck is a pretty fantastic Nolan North performance.

That was pretty sneaky how Brad snuck Starcraft into the best ending category after everyone agreed Brotherhood is awesome.

And I had to laugh a little bit when they went on about the amazing PS3 exclusives and then the list comes out to be Heavy Rain and Sports Champions. The only exclusives that matter for any console at this point are Mario/Zelda, Gears of War and Uncharted.

EDIT: Where is the 2010 Soulja Boy award???

Why does Ryan like that RDR title card so much? When it came up for me I felt dead inside... I'll just post this thing here as well cause I really need an answer:

I don't get how the ending of RDR is satisfying.

Bad Company 2 for Best Competitive imo.

Close between ME2 and AC:B for best ending this year.  Despite the stupid Reaper puppet, I loved the structure they went for on that last mission in ME2.  AC:B made me want the next game immediately.  RDR's ending can suck it. (Best game ending remains Mafia, followed by The Witcher.)

Fable needs to take a break.  The dude responsible for games as varied as Populous, Syndicate, Theme Park, Magic Carpet, Black & White etc. etc. shouldn't be overseeing a Fable assembly line.  It's unbecoming.  He'd probably have his knighthood by now if he wasn't wasting his talent on Fable.

You must be new here "
I've always been pretty disappointed with Giant Bomb's coverage on the God of War franchise. When Brad played the E3 demo for a Quick Look, he just complained that it was requiring him to use too many buttons and whined about how sleepy he was.  But I figured that since they were showing it off for winning their PS3 GotY award, they might actually put some effort in this time.  "
What he means to say is this is the rule here, not the exception.

Final Fantasy doesn't need to be given to a western developer for a shot. No. SquareEnix needs to figure out how to modernize the franchise instead of being stuck in the direction FFXIII took in (which was perhaps the grandest example of a extremely linear game).

I was hoping for some of the Cronos fight for the video but there was plenty of good stuff in there to see. So next year to beat Mafia II a game is going to need three Nolan Norths talking to each other.

People didn't like FFXII because it actually sought to radically change the gameplay.  It was a fun game, but under-appreciated because JRPG fans didn't get their pointless romance scenes angsty teenagers, or reluctant child hero.  Instead we got something much more akin to an American-style RPG system and a Star Wars-esque story that really resonated with me.

And then they went right back to what they've always done with FFXIII.

I don't expect them to care what I have to say.  I'm generally genial when it comes to addressing the staff directly, but I find that particular comment in their awards write-up insipid to the extent that I felt justified in addressing them in the way that I did.  If they want to call me out on my rudeness themselves, so be it, but when they openly use the same phrase when addressing certain bodies in the game industry, I don't think that they'd be particularly concerned by the occasional flippantly deployed F-bomb in their direction by a site user.

I for one loved the linearity of the game, because when JRPG's (or games in general)  give me too many options  I mostly end up doing none of them at all, that might just be me though. I'm still working on finishing the game, but the biggest problem with the game is the characters and  because of that, the story. I don't really care for any of them, Snow and Hope might be the most annoying characters I've had to endure in a long time, which is horrible for an RPG.

Fucking thank you. XII was so brilliant in so many ways (though Vaan was an obvious weak link) that, despite my appreciation of XIIIs story and world, it was sad to see them go so far backwards in unique ideas. The world has moved on, and I fear that JRPGs are going with them - which is sad because the WRPG dramatization style of having folks stare at each other and move lips is not the best for emotional impact.

I'm surprised Call of Duty wasn't in the take a break category. I still enjoy the games, but they're clearly headed towards a cliff, and I really don't want them to drive that franchise into the ground, even though it seems certain that they will.

The linearity of FFXIII didn't bother me too much.

It was the fucking vague storyline and shitty characters.  I didn't care about a single character in FFXIII.  They were all annoying.  They talked a lot but never truly said anything.

Fair enough, but I always felt the linearity of the game to be one of the game's biggest faults. I loved the environment I got to travel in, but for about 10 hours I've been literally just walking straight forward to the next point. I pretty much gave up by the flying ship and I hear after that the game starts to open up, so I probably need to go back and do that. Still, it sucks.

Also I think most JRPGs are pretty linear compare to the western counterparts. FFXIII is a hugeee extreme example of linearity. I normally couldn't give a rat's ass about linearity, but the way how the game was handled and executed turned me off.

Still, it sucks.  Also I think most JRPGs are pretty linear compare to the western counterparts. FFXIII is a hugeee extreme example of linearity. I normally couldn't give a rat's ass about linearity, but the way how the game was handled and executed turned me off. "
I would agree that it definitely could have been handled better than just walking in that straight path, but I didn't find it to be too bad, for sure, it just wasn't a big problem for me personally, because of the reasons that I mentioned earlier, but I can certainly see why people would hate/dislike this game, and even if the characters (story in general) had been worth following, better JRPG's has been released this generation, Lost Odyssey and especially Tales of Vesperia comes to mind. But right now I'm 40 hours into FF13, and I have to grind my ass off and finish this game, too much time invested in it at this point to just give up, cheesy ass inspirational talk, Snow "I'm going to fistpump after every single goddamn sentance" and Hope "I'm a whiny ass bitch" be damned!

I've never been a big fan of modern FF, but I'd like to see these games IMPROVE.

" People didn't like FFXII because it actually sought to radically change the gameplay. "

People with taste didn't like FFXII because its combat system was boring as shit.

Don't compartmentalize groups of people because they disagree with you.

FF13 is bad as well, though.
