Recently, during a Spore preview event, Will Wright mentioned that the first thing he does when concepting a new game is "make the box first." We've had a lot of discussions around the office about games that should be made, like EA Spore-ts and Sid Meier's Will Wright Tycoon. So, while I have no idea how to actually program a game into existence, I'm going to channel Mr. Wright's "make the box first" philosophy and present you with Transformers: Race for Energon!
In my boyish fever-dream I imagine that this game combines Burnout Paradise with giant, transforming robots. Players choose their Transformer and set off for a high-speed, high-destruction romp throughout a given course. The level design would have to take into account that there certain advantages and disadvantages to racing as a car, plane or robot, but you can change whenever want. Really this game is all about going over 100 mph and changing into a running robot without missing a beat. Someone make this, please. I want to go running, full speed, off a building as a jive-talkin' robot and land as a jive-talkin' Porsche, without losing momentum.
As a robot, I imagine you would be able to manipulate the environment, create hazards for other racers, pick up and throw other vehicles and generally create mayhem. Also, you should only be able to acces certain areas in certain forms. As a plane, maybe you can go the fastest but if the course takes place in some canyons or through some city streets, that speed could get you into real trouble, real fast. Racing as a car, well, we all know what that is like. This time, though, you'll have to make sure its your most efficient choice. When you beat the game you can unlock a triple changer, like Blitzwing. Heck yeah.
The races would probably have to incorporate some kind of checkpoint system or rings, so planes couldn't just fly through an entire course, bypassing the whole the "racing" part. Maybe there's some open world stuff, where you can run some mission-style races. I like a little structure in my games.
So there it is. Somebody get on this because I really want to transform from a plane into a robot and drop 500 feet, like a rock, and take off running. Of course, this is all based around traditional Transformers; don't give me that crazy new stuff. Dinobots are optional.
