Most Popular Achievements (11/21 - 11/27)

Assassin's Creed II factors in big on an individual basis, but Dragon Age takes control of the top-level pages in on this week's charts.

At first I was sort of surprised to see that Modern Warfare 2 has slipped so far down the charts this week, but considering the draw of the multiplayer (and the lack of multiplayer achievements), it makes sense that it didn't hold on to the top spot.

Meanwhile, Assassin's Creed II has had a big week. Though its summary page isn't at the top of its list, it's taken over most of the spots on the individual list. It's also been big on the "yesterday's biggest achievements" list on the homepage, which tracks what people are actually unlocking, not just what they're visiting on the site. Judging by those numbers, I figured that Assassin's Creed II would top both lists. Either way, I certainly didn't expect Dragon Age: Origins to surge and take the top spot.

Here's the most popular list for last week. This covers game-level summary pages on Giant Bomb.

I still need to crack open my copy of this.
I still need to crack open my copy of this.

Top Ten Sets

  1. Dragon Age: Origins
  2. Left 4 Dead 2
  3. Assassin's Creed II
  4. Borderlands
  5. Modern Warfare 2
  6. 1 vs. 100
  7. Tony Hawk: RIDE
  8. Forza Motorsport 3
  9. Batman: Arkham Asylum
  10. Garry's Mod

Heads-up, we've got another 2010 release in the system now with THQ's Darksiders. The Saboteur also found its way into the database along with a few other new releases. Oh, and the Steam-side issue preventing that version of Left 4 Dead 2 from appearing on profiles appears to have been cleaned up. Unfortunately, there's another issue that's preventing Serious Sam HD from appearing. I assume that'll get fixed before too long.

The individual list is where Assassin's Creed II is really cleaning house. And the achievements that made the list are the ones that are, for the most part, a little out-of-the-way. For example, I just finished the game yesterday and never figured out how to throw sand at dudes. After reading the comments on the Messer Sandman page, I think I might pop it back it to quickly get that achievement. Collecting feathers, however, is beyond my patience level. If you're game for that, there are links to plenty of solid feather guides on the In Memory of Petruccio page.

Here's the list, but I don't think we're done talking about AC2 just yet.

'Get back in there and throw five bodies into piles of hay, you idiot!'

Top Ten Individual

  1. Assassin's Creed II - Messer Sandman
  2. Assassin's Creed II - Show Your Colors
  3. Left 4 Dead 2 - GUARDIN GNOME
  4. Assassin's Creed II - In Memory of Petruccio
  5. Assassin's Creed II - Myth Maker
  6. Borderlands - You're on a boat!
  7. Borderlands - Braaaaaaaaaaaaains!
  8. Assassin's Creed II - Vitruvian Man
  9. Left 4 Dead 2 - CONFEDERACY OF CRUNCHES
  10. Assassin's Creed II - An Old Friend Returns

The AC2 data is pretty interesting, showing just how deep people are getting into the game. If you check the daily top ten on the homepage, you were able to see different story-based achievements rise and fall on that list as the bulk of the game's 3,697 players moved their way through the game. At this point, a full 35.98% of that crew have seen the credits roll. It's a pretty good credit sequence, I thought.'

The Borderlands achievements are also moving, since the recently-released DLC added five more achievements to the list. A full 13.16% of the game's 6,528 players have completed the first story-based achievement for the DLC. That's not a tough achievement to get, too, so I expect most of the players who bought the pack already have that achievement. There's... probably some kind of crazy math I could complete and then mix with some armchair analyzing to make a widely inaccurate guess at the DLC's sales figures, but instead I'll just say that the number of people with that achievement will probably pass the only non-common achievement from the main game, which is the achievement you get for hitting level 50. 18.46% of our Borderlands players have hit level 50. As one of those players, let me tell you that finishing Playthrough 2 and getting all of the enemies jacked up to level 50 (or 51, in some cases) is worth it, especially if you're going to keep playing online with friends. Though I suspect I'll never be able to beat Mothrakk now that I've gone and done that. I still maintain that the Mothrakk quest is the toughest quest in the entire game... though if you're a lucky driver playing alone, it seems like you can sort of cheat your way through it using a vehicle and a mess of patience.

Oh, hey, easy points tip for you before I go. Backyard Football '10. Ten achievements, 100 points each. The game is kind of terrible, so by no means am I instructing you to pay actual money for the game. But if you can rent it or borrow it or something... well, let's just say you'll only need an hour or so with it to do what you need to do. Set it on easy, set the quarters to their maximum length, and go for it.

Mothrakk is tough if you aren't jumping down and hiding underneath the roof of the Catch-A-Ride, waiting for the hellfire to stop raining, and then laying enough assault rifle ammo into him to make him feel like Bonnie & Clyde!  Come on, Jeff...STRATEGY!

Also...I think Borderlands is never going to leave the top 10.

I'm still hunting down my MW2 points, in pathetic fashion... I'm just not getting the same lust for them as I did with CoD4.

Dragon Age has a lot of achievements/trophies that can be earned fairly easily, but those looking for a quick 1000 better look elsewhere.

Probably the number of people that use it and the ease with which the achievements can be earned.

I'm glad people are enjoying Assassin's Creed II as much as I am.  Even the secondary missions are fun.  Hell, it's fun to just run around and explore.  Getting achievements in this game is fun, not painful.

@jakob187: After I died about 20 times trying to kill Mothrakk when I first unlocked the quest, I gave up and went and did other things. Then, by chance I was riding past where (s)he? was and just gave it a shot. I accidentally ended up under the Catch-a-Ride roof and FINALLY murdered that fuck. In other words... word.

@Jeff Gerstmann: thanks for being so open about your achievement fixation. is there any way you can parlay this addiction into a weekly short video where you go rent or receive these games in the mail and maybe do a QL of them? Or maybe a montage after like a month of gametap?

I think this might have something to do with it too. This achievement was deprecated and replaced by this one. It still appears on Giant Bomb's list of achievements though, and its mysterious nature has caused it to appear on the Top Ten Individual list several times.

Yep this is what I had to do but I had a shitty sniper and forgot to buy ammo and it took forever, but if you bring a kick ass sniper or assault rifle you should beable to beat him easily if you have the patience.

I just used a really sweet shotgun and just shot at it for a while until it came towards me and then I ran away and repeated the process.

Mothrakk is easy to kill, you just have to hide in one of the huts along that nearby cliff. Takes a while, but you can just snipe him a bunch and then hide from the carpet bombing.

Play-through 2 Mothrakk is tough but doable. I did it while level 48 Siren  - Hyperion High recharge/ High Fire resist shield, and spec'ced as a Controller/Assassin and with high level Merc mod, + a very hard hitting submachine gun.  Took about 1 minute (which is a lifetime in that game).

Also - I think EA dropped the price on Dragon Age for the holiday weekend.  ....that and there are a lot of old RPG fans out there.. The game has legs, and knows how to use them.

I used Sledge's shotgun, running a really wide figure 8 and constantly swearing at the TV in order to kill Mothrakk.  you know what it's like to use a gun with 0 range at a gigantic flying beast waaaaaay above you for an eternity?  Reality-shattering.

This is pretty much what I did as well.  At first, I initially attacked head on and stood my ground but got pwned quickly.
But then I figured that you can just run like the wind when Mothrakk starts spitting rain.  He usually throws 8-10 shots.  Just remember to clear out skags in the area first.

Alternatively, you could hunt for a Extreme Fire Damage resistance shield.

I just 1000 point'd AC2 this weekend and i'm still enjoying it.  I can't wait for DLC to find out what happened in that 10 year gap.
