Nintendo Holds Hour-Long Press Conference to Announce Monster Hunter 4

Nintendo keeps the focus on Japan, worshipping at the altar of Monster Hunter. Also, that circle pad add-on will (probably) cost you $20.

Between Monster Hunter Tri 3G and Monster Hunter 4, Nintendo's made some key moves in Japan.
Between Monster Hunter Tri 3G and Monster Hunter 4, Nintendo's made some key moves in Japan.

Tonight's press conference in Japan didn't really need Shigeru Miyamoto or Satoru Iwata, as it basically amounted to a slide show of game logos and release dates, mixed in with some video clips. If there was a theme around the conference, it was Iwata informing the world that games (specifically, sequels) are on the way.

Despite (legitimate) fears, Nintendo did not throw the original 3DS design under the bus...yet.
Despite (legitimate) fears, Nintendo did not throw the original 3DS design under the bus...yet.

The biggest announcement came at the very end, following the proper unveiling of Monster Hunter Tri 3G, a 3DS-enhanced port of Monster Hunter Tri for the Wii with new content. The trailer showed a Monster Hunter game with larger, more open environments and even some...platforming? Wait, what?

There's a reason it's looking so different: it's Monster Hunter 4, a huge grab for Nintendo.

Sony may be getting a Monster Hunter for Vita, but so far, if you want the next major evolution in Japan's ongoing phenomenon, you'll have to have a 3DS. It's hard to understand how big that announcement is outside of Japan, where Monster Hunter hasn't resonated on the same scale, but Monster Hunter saved the PSP--period. If Monster Hunter becomes mostly a Nintendo joint, that's a huge blow against Sony.

Monster Hunter Tri 3G was dated for December 10. It's expected Sony will announce a December release date for Vita in Japan later this week at Tokyo Game Show, but has Nintendo already stolen Sony's holiday thunder? Much of Vita's lineup remains to be seen, but some big guns will have to come out at TGS. Dedicated handhelds may be on decline, but Sony and Nintendo are slugging it out. Can you imagine if Sony announces a December 10 date for Vita?

The craziest omission? The controversial second analog stick. It wasn't shown, mentioned, discussed, dated, priced--anything. I previously argued Nintendo's poor rollout of the accessory is what prompted all the doomsday talk, and besides Iwata not pulling a re-designed 3DS out of his pocket, the company did nothing to shush that talk. We still have no idea what the plan is, but perhaps Nintendo's lack of commentary says all we need to know: this is a Monster Hunter thing, chill out.

No Caption Provided

Then, after the conference, Nintendo spilled the details on its website. The accessory arrives alongside Monster Hunter Tri 3G on December 10 for 1,500 yen (roughly $20). While it may seem obvious, Nintendo made it clear games will need to specifically add support for the additional circle pad. Monster Hunter Tri 3G, Resident Evil: Revelations, Metal Gear Solid: Snake Eater 3D, Ace Combat 3D, Dynasty Warriors, and Kingdom Hearts 3: Dream Drop Distance will be the first to support it.

Weirdly, it also comes with more battery support. Sort of. The accessory requires a AAA battery. Basically, expect this to be part of the revision. This is a clumsy, short-term solution to the problem.

Nintendo catered to its Japanese audience. There was a reason foreign media wasn't invited, despite a number of writers being in Japan for TGS. Most of the games weren't aimed at a Western audience, such as a new Tomodatchi Collection, featuring some famous Japanese comedians, or yet another Dynasty Warriors game or SD Gundam G Generation 3D or one featuring singer Miku.

Paper Mario, aka the game with visuals that were born to exist on 3DS, is still alive and kicking.
Paper Mario, aka the game with visuals that were born to exist on 3DS, is still alive and kicking.

We did see more of Paper Mario, so that game's still alive, and Nintendo confirmed a new Fire Emblem game featuring a 2D map but 3D battles. Animal Crossing is moving along and looks like how a new Animal Crossing would look if Nintendo decided to take zero risks with a new Animal Crossing. Kid Icarus: Uprising was briefly featured, but only to announce a delay to early next year. Mario Tennis is also coming to 3DS.

Oh, and Square Enix announced an RPG called Bravely Default: Flying Fairy. No, I'm not kidding. A pink 3DS is also coming.

I'd expect Nintendo will hold an event for press sometime this fall. The response to today's conference will be a combination of relief--"No new system, even though we all know it's coming but it's nice to pretend otherwise for a while!"--and disappointment--"Where are the games for everyone else?"--sure to come out of an event that appeared specifically designed to entice the Monster Hunter crowd to 3DS.

Nintendo of America's Twitter mentioned some of the announcements at the conference but not all--like the add-on. The account did confirm a firmware update in November with new Street Pass items and the ability to record 3D videos.

I could use more hats.

Nintendo does not participate at TGS, so Nintendo announcements are off the table for now, though we're sure to hear about some more third-party games over the course of the week.

Announce as many games as you want, Nintendo, but you really gotta start rolling them out as well.

Bravely Default, in addition to stealing a great band name, looks Goddamn gorgeous. It looks like if Studio Ghibli animated Final Fantasy 3.

Maybe this isn't my place, but this much editorialising in a news article seems quite misplaced. I actually thought there was a pretty good showing coming out of this conference, although it was quite Japan-o-centric in some spots. Plus, I read on another website that 48 3DS games will be at the Tokyo Game Show, and given that Nintendo doesn't attend, that's healthy third-party support.

Playstation Vita is on the ropes now, and needs one hell of a TGS blow-out to have any chance of competing this holiday season. Especially if they stick to the price tag announced at E3.

Well the Vita has Persona 4: The Golden which is a pretty big thing especially in Japan, it had a decent showing at E3 this year as well.

I think the Vita will be just fine. It's looking to have a far better launch lineup than the 3DS did.

No confirmation on if Monster Hunter 4 is exclusive is there? It might be timed or otherwise just announced for this platform for now, like how Microsoft announced some games at E3, but they were actually multiplatform.

I really don't want to play MH4 on a 3DS, ever. Hopefully it will make it to the Vita as well.

Also, what the hell Sony? why would you lose the one franchise that kept your PSP afloat and is a cultural phenomenon. Nintendo must have dropped some serious money or Sony is just stupid. Probably both =(

I've never played a MH game, although I intend to one day. But i'm really looking forward to Paper Mario, it looks like a return to the N64 RPG style version of the game.

It is a slightly argumentative headline to put in. I swear I thought Brad Nicholson wrote the piece for a second. I like what Patrick has done for GB news, but the snark could be toned down a notch on occasion.

I agree the press conference actually did a lot to turn around the 3DS with some good strong titles announced. Monster hunter isn't a western concern, but the other games sound neat.

There could never be a game good enough to get me to pay more money down the 3DS hardware toilet. If I ever own this circle pad attachment, it'll be because Nintendo bundles it for free with a game.

No. It's only big in Japan and creating a PS3 game would be incredibly expensive and time consuming.

And sorry, but these Japanese titles do little to increase my confidence about my 3DS purchase. I enjoy the MH series somewhat, but I can understand why it doesn't sell in the west. It's uses very dated mechanics and focuses 100% on grinding, something that should never be seen in another game ever again.

Hasn't there already been a pink DS? I'm pretty sure there's a pink DS already out, right? Mine's cobalt blue.

Now that Nintendo seems to have snagged the Monster Hunter license, Sony needs to counter-balance by grabbing the Dragon Quest license. Those franchises are Call of Duty-huge over there.

What puzzles me, and is funny at the same time- Do some research on monster hunter 1 reviews. Ryan Davis himself reviewd it on gamespot, and gave it a 5.7. I owned it myself, and thought, wtf? It had good social mechanics, especially for a ps2 game, but the gameplay itself was absolutely atrocious. But my point being, the series hasn't changed a bit to the 3rd game. With the rise of its popularity, the reviews started getting higher and higher. Its not like the games actually got any better. Focused more on grinding is about it.

I doubt it had much to do with Nintendo actually. Like I said in the last post, we haven't seen a PS3 MH title because it'd just be too expensive and time consuming to develop.. One of the reasons Japanese developers loved the PSP so much was because they could make cheaper games for it, like MH, Dissidia and Valkyria Chronicles. The downside of Sony making the Vita so powerful is that these titles were always going to jump ship to the 3DS.

Dragon Quest would be big for Sony.. but how many years will it be before we see X, especially after it's had such a negative reception even in Japan? Then how many years will it be before we see XI?

If anything, I'd like to see Microsoft get the series as an exclusive.. the reaction in Japan would be pretty amusing.

I think it might be too late to save the Xbox in Japan, however it would be an amusing "get". I'm pretty sure it would require someone at Nintendo to commit seppuku for the loss.

Did they say Monster Hunter 4 was coming exclusively to 3DS? I highly doubt that. Plus the one coming out this year for 3DS is merely a port with an analog stick you have to buy.

I'm sure most people (apart from the fanatic fanboys) don't see it as "great".

They paid $260, now another $20 dollars for an add-on that you need to carry around fucking AA batteries for and all they have to show for are a few 20+ year old SNES games, a remade Zelda and a now chunky and hideous looking 3DS.

What´s up with the knee-jerk comments in here? , you don´t  like monster hunter? I don´t too but I don´t feel the need to trash a game I know nothing about or like to begin with , are you bother by Japan´s obsesion with Monster Hunter why? then you should be bother by America´s obsesion with military shooters and the fact that at least a dozen of those tittles that play exactly the same are release year after year , man I looove hypocrisy.

@NaCl: I suppose "great" might be a strong word, but they are announcements of/about games which interest plenty of people. Yeah, the general 3DS situation is still shit, I agree about that, but that doesn't make the variety of games they spoke about something no one wants to hear about. l3reak conveyed my sentiment better.

Ok I have a hard time not laughing every time I hear something that gawd awful second analog stick. Now it needs batteries? Well obviously since the 3DS can't hold a charge worth a fuck to begin with. Just, DAMN this is funny!

As for the games there's a number of them I'm looking forward to like Kid Icarus and Fire Emblem so that's good. But I won't be bothered to buy a 3DS until the next eventual hardware revision thank you. Which we will most likely see by next year. Count on it.

I just see Nintendo loosing the plot, I really do. They had the handheld market licked and steady and solid hardware would have ticked them over but they needed to work on their downloadable games. These needed to compete with the android and iPhone games with nice short quick and cheap games.

So far All we get is stupid clock apps etc when a port of angry birds would have gone down a treat!

They need to stop trying to come up with hardware gimicks to people to buy their products. The wii was something different, something new just like lots of other hardware fads but it was never going to last. Now that is harsh, I know, I have never been a fan of the wii myself but it was cool, there have been some great games but Nintendo have always been terrible with their 3rd party games and always re-make the same games over and over.

I would play a new Mario any day of the week, do not get me wrong but Nintendo always feel like they run out of ideas fast and like I mentioned have to latch onto some crazy hardware idea. When that idea is lacking they rush out addons, extra bits you plug on to try and make it better etc. The Motion plus is a great example of that.

The problems though are that they then do not do the games properly. How many games used/use motion plus properly? Hardly any.

Then Online wise I have always criticised Nintendo for simply not getting it.

I think the wiiU will flop for sure. Initial early sales may be fairly decent but I think it will be quite a high price and when people realise the screen is not capacitive they will be frustrated by it. I can sense hardware build quality issues being present as well.

Then you have things like these weird presentations, Nintendo doing "Japan Only" things again and trying to fall back on what they know etc. Everyone knows the Japanese gaming market has got smaller and smaller and the companies doing it right "Capcom for example" Realise that the gaming market is far more Western then it used to be and that is where the money is.

Nintendo seem lost to me and seem like they do not know what to do about it. They have people who can make great games but up top everyone just seems lost and confused.

I just have not got a blind clue what on earth they are doing, They were the kings of mobile gaming and due to their lack of keeping with the times or even seemingly understanding it and where it is heading are just loosing it.

I really feel I am missing things here, I think Even Jeff and the team have talked about it in terms of mobile gaming. The 3DS did not need the 3D screen, Make a solid upgrade to the DS, maybe capacitive screens now. Not having the second analogue may not be the right thing, maybe it does need it I can not say but a well priced updated hardware device would have sold well.

Thing is though is to get those games rolling out!

Their online market store should be a thing of awesome, nice looking, accessed at home on the computer or on your DS. Buy a $5 game that is quite decent, developers able to make games, submit them, sell through the store. Try and get some pots f IOS games on there - Fruit Ninja, Angry Birds, Doodle Jumper... Seems a no brainer to me?

Then of course the much talked about other direction too. A Mario on the ipad/iPhone at $6-9 would sell like CRAZY! so would a zelda port.

I even think Nintendo are about done and finished with home consoles, I personally think they are going the way of Sega in that regard. Nintendo will also loose the mobile handheld market if they do not wake up and smell the coffee too!

If Nintendo had any sense they would look to sort their mobile hardware, get a solid non gimicky DS going, good price, nice kit that people enjoy and sort their online experience out and work hard on having good consistent downloadable games as well as great 1st AND 3es party retail games.

You then look to do some ports on mobile devices like Android and IOS - Money to be had here, lots of it. Sony are kind of doing it in a messy way but they are at least trying something here.

Make great games, 1st Party games for Nintendo have always been solid. Shipping a Zelda game onto 360, PS3, Vita, Ds, IOS version for me just seems like a licence to print money.

If Nintendo do not wake up from what ever lala land they are currently in they will just go under in a big way if you ask me. Some solid restructuring though to get back on track and Nintendo could actually latch onto real money spinning directions and be even the better for it.

I do not know, seems obvious to me, I just do not get what is happening to Nintendo, they seem frightened of change and frightened of how gaming has evolved.

Nintendo talked about five games with Mario in the title. It was funny after awhile how every game, one after the other, was Mario. Then Monster Hunter-- Frankenstick lives! That add-on is embarrassing. I don't have a 3DS but I watched this press conference hoping Nintendo would bring something to entice me. I'm sorry but I have played so many Mario games. I've played countless platformers with Mario, six previous Mario Karts, three Paper Mario games-- I don't need any more! Also, did anyone notice how 3D took a major backseat?

The first mario tennis was the only good one. Adding power moves completely fucked the gameplay. K.I.S.S Nintendo

Because knee-jerk hypocrisy is easier than actually putting thought into anything.

I believe that's part of the problem.

The "future" of the 3DS casts a dark cloud over everything about it.

The whole thing with the add-on kind of reminds me of the Sega 32x. Both are unwieldy, hideous and "need their own power supply" add-ons trying to "improve" their respective systems while a potentially superior product is looming just on the horizon.

Well at least they aren't changing up the system yet. I do really want one though for Christmas.

A revision is inevitable. The extra analog attachment is just a quick-fix.

A new Mario Tennis has alone justified my purchase of a 3DS. Hell yeah, motherfucker.

So your snazzy new game console has 1 analog stick? Sorry. Slap this bad boy on. It requires a battery. Sorry. It also does not contain any precious metal so..... Sorry.
