Nuts, Bolts, and Tiny Text

If you don't have an HDTV, you might want to try out that Banjo-Kazooie: Nuts & Bolts demo before buying it...

Bottles here uses his magnificant specs to read all that teensy text.
Bottles here uses his magnificant specs to read all that teensy text.
There hasn't been a lot of talk lately about playing Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 games on standard-definition televisions. I sort of assumed that we had all finally joined up with the future and gone HD. But there's still a segment of SD players out there, and they're not too happy with Rare's demo for Banjo-Kazooie: Nuts & Bolts.

The game contains some pretty tiny text, text that becomes unreadably blurry on some older sets. Now, CVG has word from a Rare community manager stating that the issue won't be corrected in the final product.

"Unfortunately, this is an issue that doesn't look like it will get changed. I don't want to bore you with the technical side of things (I really don't understand it all myself), but the long and the short of it is that the text you see in the demo will be the same as that which you find in the retail version of the game."

The Rare rep, George Kelion, went on to claim that it would be "too expensive in terms of time, resources, and money" to correct the issue for SD users. I wonder if that means that the percentage of Xbox 360 owners using SD sets has shrunk to an insignificant number, or if the fix would be so challenging that it wouldn't be a good use of Rare's time. Either way, you television dinosaurs had better download that demo and check it out if you're thinking about investing in the final game when it releases later this month.

If you are really still using an SD TV to play games, you might as well just throw your 360 out the window now.

The DEMO was really a wow moment for me to hear all the old tunes again, unfortunately this game is simply unplayable for SDTV users like myself.

To all SD users: GET WITH THE TIMES.

Seriously, if you have a 360 or PS3, an HDTV is more than a worthy investment, it's a must.

I'm on an SDTV, and the text is pretty much unreadable.  Hopefully I'll be able to get an HDTV soon, but being a broke-ass college student, that isn't very likely.  And to all you folks saying "get with the times,"  why don't you chill the fuck out and realize that some people can't afford or don't want to buy an HDTV - maybe they would like to spend that money on other stuff, like food or education, or more games ;)

CVG didn't get that info. George K posted it in NeoGAF's official thread.

It does suck though. The text is small as hell even on an HDTV. I used to get pissed *constantly* at games with shitty-ass text on my SDTV, but thankfully HD has alleviated that somewhat. Sorry, SD people. You'll be missing out on a very good game.

This is only made worse by the fact that there isn't anything resembling spoken human language in the game.

Those arseholes. It's called STANDARD definition for a reason. As in, the majority of television owners still use it(myself included)

Im still an SD player, i actually could afford an HDTV but guess what? i dont want one, call me crazy if you like, but right now, i dont even need one, my TV is huge, but SD, so the only thing i suffer is flicker and small text. Dont get me wrong, i'd love the bennefits of an HDTV, i just dont need one.

Well my $50 sd tv puts out a picture good enough to make the text in dead rising very readable.  I don't think this game will be any different.  I have no need to upgrade until I see something that makes my tv inferior.

It's unbelievable that this issue made it into the final product.  This means they do not QA test their games on SD TVs at all.  I find that uncannily sloppy on Rare's part, and downright baffling for a Microsoft-published game.

The ad I've seen online for Banjo actually advertises the HD-cable-less Xbox 360 Arcade at the end!  How is the SD TV owner who buys this game and that system supposed to play the game?!

I must have the eyesight of a hawk, because I game on a 27" SD set and I have no problem reading the text. Actually, I think it may be because I use component cables for my 360 instead of crappy composite ones. Seriously, component cables make a huge difference in terms of clarity and color reproduction, even on a standard definition TV.

I'm in the small percentage of people still using an SD TV....mostly 'cause I'm 16 and even with my job I won't be able to save up for one until after this holiday season....too many damn games coming out.

I downloaded the demo, and I have a Sd T.V. (32 inch) and I'm not having a big problem. Yeah, it kinds sucks that the voice acting doesn't help you if your trying to understand whats going on, but honestly, its a Banjo game. The only time the text is absolutely necessary is in the tutorial for the car building, but that is it really. Everything else is pretty self explanatory, and illistrated for your with camera angles and examples.  Go here, get this Jiggy, race this guy, hit these guys. Its not like its hard to figure out what to do when you see a giant soccer ball and a big soccer field.

But yeah, still sucks about the small text, I do like the story in the Banjo games, but you can still appreciate the core of the game, without it.

I don't have an HDTV so I spent $10 on a VGA cable so I could play on my computer monitor. Is it as good as playing on a 32" or 42" widescreen? No. But is it in HD? Yes! I recommend this option to anyone that has a computer monitor with a VGA in and no HDTV.

I'm in college. My parents have an HDTV at home, and frankly I really don't need one to survive. My SD set is quite big enough for my Haloz and Gears. I can still be a "Hardcore" gamer without the absolute BESTEST tv thank you very much.

Anyway, this only added to the crapburger that is this new Banjo game. I wouldn't wish that demo on my worst enemy.

Dead Rising and Lost Planet both were patched to address the issue with tiny text years ago.  It was a bit early for devs to think everybody had HD in 2006, but today it's a more logical assumption that a person that can afford a $400 game console can afford a $400 HD set from Costco.

I play my 360 on a 22" widescreen LCD I use for my PC, I've still got a ticking time bomb of a 1st gen 360 so SVGA is all I can use, but it works nicely - especially for quick web searches for a game guide.  My only real issue is noise, an old 360 and a PC right next to me is like being on an airplane.

That being said, how hard is it really to go back and up the font size for a patch?  Lair was steaming piece of shit until the patched in decent controls, and that game was already a lost cause when they did it.  So patching in some text (even when you consider all the languages involved) can't be more than a few days work for a single employee.  Although like the above poster said, what earth-shaking drama is being missed by not reading it in a Banjo game?  The damn thing could be in Sim-speak and it would be just as condusive in telling the tale.

I think there is actually a large number of people playing their video games on SD TVs.

While I could afford a new HDTV, I have these things called priorities, and I can't really make getting an HDTV set a priority when I have a perfectly functional SDTV.   Maybe once the basement is developed, and I actually have a good reason to buy a new TV, then I'll go HD.

Besides, if I'm really craving good resolution, that's what the PC is for.  You just have to wait a year or more for major console games to make it to their domain...

Overall meh, as I don't really see the appeal of this particular game.  I would have preferred a pretty new take on the old platforming convention of the old Banjo games.

I certainly cannot afford a HDTV at this time, so to me this all feels a bit like Rare spitting in one of it's loyal customers face. Sure, the majority of people use HDTV's, but the majority of people are spoilled fuckfaces. (yes, I am a bitter.)

In dialogue form it would follow something similar to this
Rare: Hey guys, I know you love our games, and there's some of you who just can't afford a bigass HDTV at this time. We'd like to thank you for all your support, buying our games and fueling our company, by making seriously small writing so you (our valued customer) cannot understand what the fuck is going on with the story, making all and any endeavor with the game ultimately pointless. Thanks guys, peace.

I was looking forward to this game. When I saw this article I decided to check out the demo, and god damn that's small. I can only imagine that after an hour or so trying to read that my eyes will be feeling severely punished.

Since I'm unsure when I'll be getting a HDTV I might just have to not pick up my pre-ordered copy of the game, hopefully I'll at least get the original on XBLA out of it.
