PSP Go Confirmed Via Qore Leak

A leaked episode of Qore confirms rumors of a redesigned PSP, along with new Gran Turismo, Jak & Daxter, and Metal Gear Solid games.

A blurry shot of the new PSP hardware.
A blurry shot of the new PSP hardware.
The rumors surrounding a significantly redesigned PSP--one that would forgo a UMD drive in favor of internal flash storage--have been coming so hot and heavy in the lead up to E3, we were pretty sure that we'd learn all about it at Sony's press conference next week. Unfortunately for Sony's best-laid plans, a shaky-cam version of what appears to be an upcoming episode of Qore, Sony's own PSN-based promotional "video magazine," has hit YouTube, confirming the existence of the PSP Go and providing a slew of details.

In the video, Qore host Veronica Belmont speaks with what appears to be Sony marketing chief John Koller, who starts off talking about some of the games that will be available for the new PSP Go download service, name-checking franchises like Gran Turismo, Jak & Daxter, and Metal Gear Solid, as well as the already-announced LittleBigPlanet PSP game. He goes on to briefly talk about plans to roll out movie rental and purchase and TV show purchasing on the PSP Go, and it kind of sounds like there might be some portability between video purchases made on the PS3 and the PSP.

The hardware is shown briefly, and while it appears to retain the same number of buttons as its predecessor, it also looks to feature a screen that will slide down over the controls, something that was key to all the PSP Go rumors up to now, and will apparently make the PSP Go smaller than the current PSP 3000 hardware. Surprisingly, Koller says that the PSP Go will not be a replacement for the PSP 3000, which Sony will continue to sell.

Aside from the sliding screen and the smaller form-factor, the PSP Go will also feature 16GB of internal flash memory to support the whole download-only format, as well as Bluetooth for tethering to the PS3 as well as cell phones, though no specifics are given as to what kind of functionality this will provide.

Sony has still given no official confirmation about this, and I suspect we still won't hear a peep from them, despite how convincing this evidence is. Here's the YouTube video that started all this fun, though I suspect it won't take long for Sony to have this pulled.

UPDATE: Eurogamer has also unearthed a gallery of clean, high-res images of the hardware. As they say, "Somebody's PSP Go-ing to get fired."

NO.

It seems that the responsible personel for designing and developing this new version isn't at all listening to the consumer's but rather the corporate's ideas.

It's sad...

Yea I know, but at this point I think they need to do something new to attract former PS2 owners, not ready to make the PS3 jump (There's a shitload of em). Make it look friendly to play, add excellent controls, make it visually appealing. I'm sorry looking at those pics makes me sad; the 16 gb internal flash is nice, but I have a feeling this is going to be a bad decision from Sony. I love that people find the older PSPs awesome, but a Playstation device with one analog stick and not two doesn't make sense to me. Maybe I'm crazy, but I look at the dualshock, and then at this and wonder what the fuck they were thinking, ergonomically that is.

I actually was going to buy a PSP instead of a PS3 couple years back. Decided to fork over the extra because I figured I'd game more at home, along with a few other reasons. The DSi has a stylus, so it doesn't need analog sticks.

I don't know why people are saying it would be too difficult or impossible for the PSP go! to have two analog sticks.  Keep in mind that the original Playstation had no analog sticks, and then when the Dualshock controller was released...they added two.

Sony dropped the ball on this one at least for me.

BTW, here's another vid for those that missed the first one while it's still up.

No second analog stick, no FUCKING DICE!  Seriously sony! WTF does it take to get it through your fucking  heads?! You can't compete with iTunes, and you can't
provide a good control scheme for the games you're trying to make for the system unless you HAVE A FUCKING SECOND ANALOG STICK!!!

Fuck. That. Noise.

Seriously, I wanted to buy this thing. It's NOT the same as the DS, to all you haters out there. They make games that work with their control schemes. The psp doesn't. I don't want to play another golden eye style game.

(For all the fanboys out there who are ready to dick on my shit, I bought the first psp Launch day, and really, earnestly wanted to be able to buy this. )

Ok, count me out of this one. The two analog sticks do nothing to me, but the "download only" format is a big no-no, specially because PSN Store never recognized my credit card information...

@Packfan104L4:  The DS works because for the most part it plays like a SNES controller. I admit the touch screen is a little gimmicky at times though. PSP was actually the "next-gen" portable system I was most looking forward to when they first were announced. I thought playing a less powerful but portable PS2 was a great idea.

Since then I've played a PSP many times and I really, really don't enjoy it and it's mainly because of the one analog stick. Not only does that bump hurt my thumb after 30 minutes but trying to control some of the games I played with 1 stick and the D-pad was confusing. If they just added an extra stick it would be funner to play. Hell, if they took away the one stick and just had you control games using the D-pad and the shape buttons I think it would be funner.

Phone up Sony. I find the PSN to be the more acceptable of online monetary transfer than both the Wii and the 360.

The Wii is basically a nightmare for online points buying. 360 may have improved.

What's the point in releasing this if they're still going to continue selling the PSP 3000? Can't that version download games as well? If so, then releasing this is rather pointless. Because PSP 3000 can download games, then it's the better choice sense it's able to play games on UMD disc's. Which is something the PSP Go can't do. Which makes it an inferior product.

Unless of course they can come up with a way to let you play UMD games on the PSP Go. Which would make it a little better, but it wouldn't change the fact that it's rather unnecessary.

I can see the merits of that design, but I think things that slide apart suck.

Also, I love how even Belmont's laughable Sony security meatshield could not prevent her condescending video from being spunked all over the internet. GOOD JOB. Get your shit in order, Sony.

Yea notice how in the Qore preview they said virtually nothing about the control scheme. Great functionality features, but no talking about how you play your downloaded games. What if I had no idea about the PSP...when you slide that little baby open, what do you see?! That's what I'm directed towards, you assume too much Sony.

@ElectricHaggis: The only surprise is how ugly it is. It looks astonished, staring back at you as if it can't believe you're not serving TV dinners on it.

The merit I see is that when it's slid open the screen should rest on your fingers, making the shoulder buttons easier to use. Unfortunately in my experience things that slide open like this break pretty quick, but then I am a clumsy bugger.

Because there is no point in retrofitting the PSP with a second analogue stick and having to modify all of the firmware and all of the devkits in existence to reflect this for future games so far into the PSP's lifespan. All of you absolute retards complaining about the analogue stick don't understand this- this is not a PSP sequel, it's the PSP-4000. The PSP2, in all likelihood, probably will have a second analogue stick. If you don't like the way the PSP is now, wait for that and stop bitching like a fucking idiot about things you obviously don't understand or bother looking for logical answers to.

As someone who uses their PSP a fair bit I kinda like the design, there was no way they were going to add an additional analogue stick as that would have separated this device from the current model.  It will be interesting to see how Sony promotes this device at their press conference i.e. transferring existing games etc, better file management  for movies, music and such.  As an all encompassing  media device, I just wish they would have made it more than 16gb.  With all the leaks of information the PR reps from Sony must be pulling their hair out.

How many PS2 ports do you see coming out on the PSP? From Software announced a bunch, but otherwise most if not all of the games coming out for the PSP are original exclusives or original multiplatform games. This assertion is almost as stupid as the assertion that they should have added a second analogue stick.

This is the worst idea I've ever heard. Wow, this is stupid. Did Sony just straight up ignore the fact that everyone wants another analog stick, or are they just retarded? And why would they make it download only when their main fanbase is most likely kids without credit cards or the plenty of people without wireless internet? And they're going to keep selling the regular PSP, so developers need a UMD version of new games along with downloadable? Why is every single idea the dumbest thing I've ever heard? I just wanted a second analog, same as everyone else.

Do you think it takes extra development time to make a downloadable version or something? They're all the same, Sony just puts in a digital manual with the download versions. Developers don't make the physical games regardless. They didn't ignore the calls for a second analogue stick; they just recognize that everyone who thought there should be a second analogue stick on the current PSP were wrong.

Seeing this early sorta kills the hype for the Sony press conference now. Not to mention the Metal Gear game for the PSP Go which could potentially be what Kojima has been working on.

As for the product itself can't say I approve. Was hoping for same screen size if not bigger with an OLED screen, certainly not a smaller screen. Can't say I was expecting a second analog stick but it doesn't look like they improved upon it either. 16GB flash memory is nice, but still not great by any means especially if you plan to store a lot of video. I also wonder about the comfort as well. The ergonomics of the design appear as if it will be uncomforabtle for extended periods of gameplay. All in all I still may purchase one assuming its price is not bogus. At the max I'm willing to fork over $149.99, not a penny more.

Well technically it does take a bit more time, but that isn't the point. They're splitting into two veins, with one costing developers for bandwidth their game takes up on the PSN, which is currently happening, so that is a obvious, if not minor pitfall for some, and the other is going to cost them more from the money it costs to make all the UMD's. So yes, it's not really a smart move in my opinion. And when 80 something percent of the fanbase isn't happy with only one analog stick, they're probably not wrong. Again, that's just my opinion, but I think a lot of people share it.

I'll be interested to see the price point for this. Flash memory is cheap as hell, the screen is smaller, and there is no UMD drive. If this thing is any more than $150, it will be a huge ripoff. As a PSP owner (bought a Slim, roommates nephew stole it, so he replaced it with a fat), I would be somewhat curious about upgrading. Depends on how they handle the UMD-game situation, and if in fact they offer some kind of downloadable game rental service.

Seems like the "cool" thing to do as a gamer is complain about the PSP. Objective, level headed people know it's a nice piece of hardware with some very good, quality games on it.

Developers are charged for DLC that appears on the PSN for the PS3, nowhere was there ever a mention of cost-per-gigabyte fees on PSP content. Given that Sony is attempting to create a digital distribution-only device, I doubt they would impose that tax just as they are starting to implement the platform. You can't have a DD-device with nothing to download because publishers don't want to front more money. Digital Distribution is, for the most part, pure profit.

Even if a majority of the 50,000,000 people who own a PSP gave a damn (and I'm guessing that this is nowhere near the case) about a second analogue stick, that wouldn't make them right. Putting a second analogue stick on the PSP would not be a good idea from any perspective, regardless of what consumers who haven't actually considered the implications of putting the second analogue stick in are. Especially from a cost perspective.
