What You'll Need To Play Dragon Age On PC

The system requirements are out for the PC version of Dragon Age: Origins. Does your machine measure up?

Forsooth, we shall need more gigahertz! Verily!
Forsooth, we shall need more gigahertz! Verily!
Shacknews went and dug up the back-of-box system requirements for the PC version of Dragon Age: Origins, and so I pass them along for your benefit. Looking at the list isn't exactly emboldening my desire to play this game on the PC, considering I'm still running on a single-core Athlon 64 that's over three years old now. It's pretty wild to see things like quad-core CPUs and 4 GB of memory already being listed in any game's "recommended" list of specs. Is your hot-rod rig up to this task?

Windows XP Minimum Specifications

  • OS: Windows XP with SP3
  • CPU: Intel Core 2 (or equivalent) running at 1.4Ghz or greater
  • AMD X2 (or equivalent) running at 1.8Ghz or greater
  • RAM: 1GB or more
  • Video: ATI Radeon X850 128MB or greater
  • NVIDIA GeForce 6600 GT 128MB or greater
  • DVD ROM (Physical copy)
  • 20 GB HD space

Windows Vista Minimum Specifications

  • OS: Windows Vista with SP1
  • CPU: Intel Core 2 (or equivalent) running at 1.6Ghz or greater
  • AMD X2 (or equivalent) running at 2.2GHZ or greater
  • RAM: 1.5 GB or more
  • Video: ATI Radeon X1550 256MB or greater
  • NVIDIA GeForce 7600 GT 256MB or greater
  • DVD ROM (Physical copy)
  • 20 GB HD space

Recommended Specifications

  • CPU: Intel Core 2 Quad 2.4Ghz Processor or equivalent
  • RAM: 4 GB (Vista) or 2 GB (XP)
  • Video: ATI 3850 512 MB or greater
  • NVIDIA 8800GTS 512 MB or greater
  • DVD ROM (Physical copy)
  • 20 GB HD space

Don't forget, Dragon Age is also headed to the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. Check out my impressions of the X360 port from E3 to get an idea of how the game is going to play on the consoles, if you don't feel like upgrading your PC yet again. And if you don't happen to know anything about Dragon Age, this ought to help fill you in.

20GB?  That's just craziness!  My 250GB games partition doesn't even have that much space free, lol.

I guess I should get this on 360, that'll be on one dual-layer DVD, right?

20 gigs?! Damn!

I'll be playing on the 360 though, my comp can't handle this and I don't feel like spending a bunch of money on it just to make it work minimally.

Anyone know if this will be a "Games for Windows" or a "Games for Windows Live"?

Basically, will it have Achievements in the PC version?

I don't understand why they wouldn't just recommend the lowest-priced Core i7 instead of a Core 2 Quad. It's more powerful (although a bit hotter, some say) and cheaper by at least 10%.

@giantwhitewhale: You truly sad person.

@anyone else: This should scare you yet more about the length of the game and the commitment of the guy's down at bioware. Here it is: Crysis is 12GB in total.

That game is Huge in term's of graphics AND game mechanic's. If this game (Dragon age: origins) is 20GB, I only wonder how much of a gamer-gasm I'll have while I'm playing it.

Anyone have any idea how much the recommended PC would cost? Not that I'm going to go buy one tomorrow. I just want to put it in perspective.

Edit: I just priced a PC from Dell, just to see. I probably could have found something cheaper if I wanted to spend more time on it, but the one I priced was $1700 (no software, no monitor, no keyboard, mouse, no extras). Obviously Dell is not going to be the cheaper end of the spectrum, but still. I don't think I've ever been happier to own a 360.

They're pretty extreme system requirements, but I'll be able to run it, even if I'll need to use lower settings. The 20GB hard drive space is shocking though. I know compression technology is always getting better, but are they going to be able to fit all the data onto a single DVD?

This is totally not cool. I don't understand why system requirements are going up as fast as they are. I mean, here I am playing Crysis on medium-high at comperable performances, and I'm only going to be able to play Dragon Age and other upcomming games at minimum? It makes me wonder why developers aren't taking their time to optimize for my rig. Oh well, one less consumer they have to worry about I guess.

A quad core and an 8800 for recommend spec?  Guess I'll be picking up the 360 version after all, which sucks because this seems like a game that'll pick up a big mod following

Think I should be okay if I can clear some HD space.  Dual-core OC'd to 3.00 GHz, SLI'd 8800GTs

I guess if I ever get a monitor big enough to want better than 1680x1050 I'll have to look at upgrading...

If you built it yourself buying all of the parts as cheap as possible and substituting in better or equivalent parts for the money, you could build the system for at least 200 less, minimum. Buying a computer is almost always on the expensive side; building your own is the cheap way :-D

You could build your own PC, with the recommended specs, for like $700 (maybe even less than that, if you really skimped).

This is if you already have the OS/Software, Case, Power Supply, Mouse, Keyboard, and Monitor.

@Jayge: That sounds about right. That's still pretty crazy though. I've been thinking about getting a new PC since my current one is getting pretty old, but there doesn't seem to be much value in it anymore. Especially when most games I want to play on PC are also coming out on consoles, they're just "better" on PC.

Is it just me or does it seem like games recommend an almost top of the line processor?  Seriously, Core 2 Quad is not the top anymore but lots of machines sold in the past year still had the Core 2 Duo.  Although the graphics recommendations are not out of reach.

Hey, to each his own I guess. I'm actually building a new PC soon myself, with the cost being about what it would take to create a rig that will run this at hopefully max settings, so the timing is perfect for me. It can be hard to justify PC gaming with consoles being that much cheaper though, I agree.

No it's not, it's probably pretty much the least amount of space they can get away with. It's not like they're shooting for the biggest amount of HD space just for the hell of it. The game's pretty huge and it's going to have a TON of stupidly high resolution textures. Those things take space.

As for me, I meet every other requirement besides the CPU. I've been looking into upgrading from my trusty Core2Duo, but I've been waiting for games to really take advantage of multiple cores. I guess this is as good a reason as any to take the plunge.

I guess I didn't mean to use "unnecessarily" but it is still mighty big. The game looks like a mammoth of a game so the file is probably accurate.

Lol I love how people are complaining more about the 20 GB HDD. um that is nothing, Terabyte HDD are under 80 bucks now, go out and get one...

Graphics cards are cheap, you could get a Nvidia 9800GT or its replacement a Nvidia 250GTS for under 120 and run this game pretty good on at least Med-high settings.

Anyway back to the question Brad asked, Yeah I can run this thing fine.

Ooh ... I  almost scrape the recommended specs, but I only have 2GB of RAM compared to the 4GB it asks for.  Still maybe I could get an extra 2GB if I feel it's worth it and have the money by then.
