Apparently the designer of imscared already has another game, and I'm Scared to play it.

I'll see you this summer, buddy.
I'll see you this summer, buddy.

We’re about to enter a period of the yearly gaming cycle where the regular flow of releases is going to slow down. For some, this is a bummer, since it means there aren’t any (or few) new games. For me, it’s one of the most exciting times of the year, since I can hack at my backlog.

What are you guys looking forward to playing with the extra time?

For me, it’s Eternal Darkness and System Shock 2. Waiting until Halloween might make more sense when it comes to timing, but there will be other horror games (where you at, Amnesia: A Machine For Pigs?) coming throughout the year, and I must strike while the iron is hot. Both have have such cult followings, and have obviously influenced those that came after. It’s one thing to know something is influential, it’s another to experience it yourself.

I can’t have the summer just be about horror, though, and so I leave the possibilities elsewhere to you. Valkyria Chronicles is an interesting strategy game that many recommended once I’d put Fire Emblem: Awakening to bed, and I intend to actually play (and finish) Dark Souls before the sequel comes out.

Hey, You Should Play This

No Caption Provided

NothingElse is coming with an unfortunate caveat: I haven’t finished it. The first 15 minutes have hooked me, but enough is going on at work that I haven’t been able to see where it all goes. The reason NothingElse is commands this space, however, is because NothingElse comes from imscared designer Ivan Zanotti. If anyone’s earned the benefit of the doubt when it comes to the unsettling, Zanotti has.

And You Should Read These, Too

No Caption Provided

When I wrote about Amnesia: The Dark Descent, one of the motivations was coming to grips with why I continue to enjoy horror. When my father passed, I wondered whether my exploration of death in a safe space would mean the genre no longer meant anything to me--that hasn’t been the case. Jenn Frank discusses her fascination with horror and other media in this piece, set behind the backdrop of the dialogue around Anita Sarkeesian and her videos exploring tropes about women in games.

"I think what I’m getting at is, especially with the horror genre, it’s less important what a movie says and more important that you, the viewer, understand why you’re enjoying it. I believe in judicious self-awareness; a director like Nicolas Winding Refn knows exactly why he makes the directorial choices he makes, and he works those kinks right out onscreen. Or, if you aren’t enjoying a piece of work—if ultraviolence isn’t your thing, or if you’re suffering a visceral reaction—it’s every bit as important that you identify what about the piece is making you uncomfortable."

No Caption Provided

Colette Bennett has some recommendations for Sarkeesian’s critics, and how to separate the argument from the author. I’m including two pieces that touch on Sarkessian’s series because the second one premiered this week and is featured below, and I know how the comments sections on those articles tend to go. You are allowed to disagree with Sarkessian, even aggressively so, but do so with a sense of class. Articulate your response, explain yourself. Stooping to name calling, derogatory remarks, and childish attitudes only undermines your point.

"Let's just say, for a moment, that instead of watching Anita's video series, you're reading the same ideas in a book (and there are dozens on the subject of feminism, and a handful on women's role in games as well). Are you still angry about them? You may be. If so, you can focus your hatred on the author of that book, or any of the other books. But notice how you feel when you're angry: insulated, seething, closed. If that feels bad, consider that there are other options, and other ways to react."

I'm not going to be backing Armikrog. I can't support anything Doug TenNapel works on. He's a staunch homophobe and knowing that, I sure as hell can't send money his way.

Glad you linked the Anita article Patrick. I disagree with some her points, but they're well-produced and interesting videos. Unfortunately they're hard to discuss since the Internet discussion usually devolves into terribleness that's impossible to ignore.

Jumped into Dark Souls myself recently and got really hooked. Definitely not as hard as everyone says if you get patience beaten into you take your time and pay attention to your surroundings.

I've just today added Rhythm Heaven Fever to a pile of Wii games I intend to play through this summer before I finally cave in and buy a Wii U (I know, I can play them on there too, but I've heard issues about its backwards compatibility).

Talking of which, you should give Pandora's Tower and Last Story a whirl in some sort of in-office feature (a... "speedy glance" kind of a thing?) before deciding whether or not to bring them home and start plugging through them. The critical opinion over them is certainly more divisive than Xenoblade, but they're also pretty imaginative and definitely worth checking out. Pandora especially has got a really creepy vibe to it I think you'd enjoy.

Anyway, thanks again for the weekend reading/watching material. Boggles the mind that people are still up in arms about Sarkeesian. Whether she has decent points or not, who does it harm to just have it out there?

Just plain odd how GiantBomb is ignoring this. Oh well, roughly 200 other sites and publications have covered it. That'll do I guess.

I believe Patrick already commented on it on Twitter awhile back saying that the whole issue is more of a Publisher thing. If it's something they want then it's what will be in the system.

I feel like Sam Lake was lying because American Nightmare was the less ambitious sequel that he said they wouldn't make. Also, I say this having literally played American Nightmare today, and Alan Wake proper/its DLC a few days ago.

I hope Quantum Break is good. I also hope that I have the money for both a PS4 and an XBone, because as it is, I'll probably only have the cash for one this year, and I also kinda don't want to use the XBone if you need the Kinect for it, but that's a totally different issue.

Another great selection of things to watch and read =) The game I'm currently working on is a "horror survival" type game so I'm always interested in seeing what else is out there in this genre. Especially of the indie variety. It's highly reassuring that games with low resolution art (read: pixel art) can still invoke fear in the player since that's the aesthetic I'm using. I also really enjoyed that dump truck on horror and hope you do more. Good stuff Mr. Klepeck!

Btw, that drawing video is real damn nice, but my favorite freestyle ink madness drawer is a guy named Kim Jung Gi. This guy is inhuman.

Glad we continue to gloss over any reasonable critiques of Anita's work and lump it all in as crazy internet people or misogynists. Instead of telling people that they shouldn't resort to name calling, why don't you highlight one of the numerous well reasoned and well articulated critiques instead of highlighting 2 articles that unabashedly support Anita.

The thread about her second video on the Giantbomb forums really isn't half bad. Personally, I don't think her videos are particularly compelling and it seems apparent that she is misrepresenting a great deal of her evidence. Far better articles have been written by more qualified people on the subject of women in pop culture.

Can someone explain what that video is about where the dude is drawing on a white board? Cool picture no idea what the context is.

Also thanks for linking to that resonable response article about Anita. I've never gotten the level of hate that is hurddled at her. First it was like she did a Kickstarter and got money for it BOOO and then they videos actually happened. Cmon Internet go read some academic literature and breakdowns of stuff like film, TV, Videogames (slowly growing), music and culture.

Love Jenn Frank, one of the best ladies in the business atm. Hope you can make it through Dark Souls and stay sane Scoops, just remember: Praise the Sun! For me I'm going to hack away at some old games as well. Finally going to play Law of the West and the first few Elder Scrolls games, as well as finally beating XCom: Enemy Unknown (I know I should have finished this by now), and diving into Kingdoms of Amalur which I've heard is pretty good.

I love the Super Mario Bros. movie. It is really dumb, but they took a game with literally no story, all universe, and turned it into a movie. They incorporated a ton of stuff from the games, then put in more dumb shit that fit in with it.

This isn't going to die down. Take a look at the comments in the normal media sites and see how people react to the idea that they don't own something that they bought because its actually only a "license." First Sale Doctrine is going to win out once non gaming people (like moms) hear that the game they are buying for little Johnny can't be shared around with the rest of the family.

Microsoft can't prevent the sale of a license in Europe since their laws actually protect their consumers. You don't tell a person that just bought your product that they don't actually own what they bought. The comments in all the various stories in non gaming related websites is proof of this.

You can be sure that if Microsoft tries to do this it will get taken to the Supreme Court. You can't have one of the biggest corporations in the world limit consumer rights without consumer advocacy groups taking notice.
