Your Cmdr. Shepard Lives On In Mass Effect 2?

The word straight from BioWare says your save game and custom character from the original game will import straight into the sequel.

All that work was not for naught.
All that work was not for naught.
The newly GameFlown Shacknews has word on some new info about Mass Effect 2 included in a documentary bundled with the Platinum Hits version of the original game that just came out.

Specifically, it sounds like you'll be able to bring your custom character from the original game straight into the sequel. It sounds like that, because director Casey Hudson said it!

"Any save game that you make from Mass Effect 1, you should be able to carry that same character into Mass Effect 2," noted Hudson.

Said Hudson of the anticipated sequel: "In the second game, you're actually going to go through a darker period where you're really looking for answers... there are a lot of twists and turns, and it's generally a much darker experience."

Hudson doesn't mention what platform(s) that feature will work on, but I'm surprised to hear it's going to happen at all. This news is in contrast to a conversation we had with some of the developers behind Saints Row 2 last year, who implied that there were inherent limitations in the way the Xbox 360 handles save files that prevented them from letting you do this with your original Saints Row character.

(They got around the problem with that delightfully ludicrous plot line about explosions, amnesia, plastic surgery, and gender reassignment. What a weird game.)

At any rate, you have to figure if Microsoft is going to make an exception on this issue for any game, Mass Effect 2 is a good candidate. The personal irony about this news for me is that I went with the stock male Commander Shepard all the way in the first game. He looked way more realistic than anything I could manage to come up with using the custom character tools. So I guess I'll be seeing ol' baldy again the second time around, either way!

I'll likely bring him over, unless the tools in ME2 are better. If they are, I'm making a gorgeous woman for all the lesbian alien scenes.

I thought this was confirmed before the first game even really released? I guess it's nice they haven't back down from the promise though. :-) Jadyn Shepard shall live on!

microsoft sould really get this working if they are having problems with it.
is it just the looks of the character or the whole sha-bang?
i.e alinment, exp and skills, whether you saved Kaiden or Ashley.

Yay! I better finish my millionth play thru with my new second character so I can play it from both my characters perspectives.  I wonder how much weight all the decisions you made in the first game will carry in the second game.  I'm assuming only your bigger decisions will play a role in the second game (The remaining people in your party, the council, etc.).  I lost one of my favorite party members on my female Shepard game, so it's going to suck playing through ME2 without him... though, of course, I'm sure new kick ass characters will be introuduced, so I suppose it doesn't matter.

Also, YAY! MORE ALIEN BOOTY FOR ME!

Your Shepherd's all pale in contrast to Leopard Shepherd!

This is awesome news, though, but I remember this being confirmed around the time the game first was? They said something like "hold onto your Mass Effect 1 game saves!" So I did.

It was always going to be the case. Cool, nonetheless.

Now if only they could throw in some Dead Space combat (with added numbers, obviously)...

I would be rather...irritated if this were not true, as I would have spent far too much time creating an entirely redundant character. Because, as we all know, one level 60 character isn't enough.

This is great news for me. now I know for a fact that all of my actions and relationships (I have multiple files) with Liara T'Soni will not have been wasted. Also as a side-note this is how Bioware wanted three games (yes its meant to be a trilogy) to work. (as in  all of your actions affecting the galaxy)

I hope they at least let you do a little modifying to your stock Shepard before you start the sequel. It's not too unrealistic over whatever time period it is between games that Shepard would change his hair or grow a beard. Hell, that's progression!

I changed the character in Mass Effect and after playing a couple of hours I finally realized that I HATE the look I chose for him. I am still torn between either restarting the game or completing it with Mr. UglyFace.

How long is Mass Effect 1 if you play it fast /?????

More importantly than appearance, I hope ME2 carries over your decisions... you have to make some very large decisions at the end of Mass Effect it would be a shame if ME2 resets everyone to a default archetype.

Volition also said some bullshit about not being able to use planes in Saints Row because of the limitations of the hardware and then what happens? Holy Shit, Saint's Row 2 has planes, boats and helicopters.
I wouldn't take their word for too much.

I guess it's just the look of the character?  Or can we bring our stats through, too?  Get a Quest for Glory style paladin vibe going on.

I can't imagine they would only let you port the aesthetics of your character over, since you could probably easily rebuild that facial model in ME2 to a reasonably close match. You heard it here first: attributes and decisions confirmed for port to ME2.

Dang...this would be AMAZING news to me if my old 360 with HDD wasn't stolen and I didn't have to play through ME all over again.  I am going to try to wait until all the DLC stuff is out before I try this...it'll be a pain trying to recreate my old character though... :(

I really hope they do figure out a way to let you import your custom Shepard into the next game. But even if they don't, I'm still completely psyched for ME2. I'd rather have a sequel then watch them waste huge amounts of time trying to figure out how to do something that just isn't possible. (Or would bog down the game so badly hardly anyone could play it)

Bioware had been saying this since BEFORE THE GAME RELEASED!  It's nice to know that they still plan to deliver on that promise but it's not really news to anyone that's been following the game.  Hell, if you watched the special on Sci-fi they did a year ago they talked about it there too.

Btw, it's not too hard to make a good looking male Shepard so i don't know why you'd be forced to go with the default dude.  Making a female however is a bit harder since there's not a lot of options.

What I'm more curious about, should they implement this technology, is what will happen to those players who do not transfer their Mass Effect data. How will the story progress?
