Your Cmdr. Shepard Lives On In Mass Effect 2?

The word straight from BioWare says your save game and custom character from the original game will import straight into the sequel.

All that work was not for naught.
All that work was not for naught.
The newly GameFlown Shacknews has word on some new info about Mass Effect 2 included in a documentary bundled with the Platinum Hits version of the original game that just came out.

Specifically, it sounds like you'll be able to bring your custom character from the original game straight into the sequel. It sounds like that, because director Casey Hudson said it!

"Any save game that you make from Mass Effect 1, you should be able to carry that same character into Mass Effect 2," noted Hudson.

Said Hudson of the anticipated sequel: "In the second game, you're actually going to go through a darker period where you're really looking for answers... there are a lot of twists and turns, and it's generally a much darker experience."

Hudson doesn't mention what platform(s) that feature will work on, but I'm surprised to hear it's going to happen at all. This news is in contrast to a conversation we had with some of the developers behind Saints Row 2 last year, who implied that there were inherent limitations in the way the Xbox 360 handles save files that prevented them from letting you do this with your original Saints Row character.

(They got around the problem with that delightfully ludicrous plot line about explosions, amnesia, plastic surgery, and gender reassignment. What a weird game.)

At any rate, you have to figure if Microsoft is going to make an exception on this issue for any game, Mass Effect 2 is a good candidate. The personal irony about this news for me is that I went with the stock male Commander Shepard all the way in the first game. He looked way more realistic than anything I could manage to come up with using the custom character tools. So I guess I'll be seeing ol' baldy again the second time around, either way!

I'm thinking Dragon Age: Origins will be your cup of tea, its decidedly similar to Baldur's Gate. I'm pretty interested in that one, my eyes are on it.

I was like "oh, cooly cool cool", and then I remembered that save is on my old account and now I'm like "oh, shitty shit shit". Oh well, let's hope this game won't have any cool multiplayer functionality.

I'm almost positive that you're major decisions will carry over. Probably in a way done at the beginning of Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic II. Either check your save file or ask you a series of covert questions to establish the backstory. As for stats that's going to be trickier. They can't allow your previous game Shepherd to be overpowered at the beginning of the second game.

Why is this considered news? It's been confirmed many-a-times, even before ME 1 came out.

Stoked though, but I've been since '07 so yeah

Well considering my Shepard is a badass mofo at this point, it'll be sad when she ends up being a minor character in the next one who has a throwaway death near the beginning of the game before she can whip out the good ol' singulariy+shotgun combo that killed everything in the last one.

I'm kinda sad. I don't wanna have to play through Mass Effect again as a good guy (I played through as a bad guy because I never did, after I switched gamer profiles) and I really don't like Shepard. It's pretty much impossible for him to look unique, but not ugly and his voice and overall personality don't really fit the lovable rogue character I usually try to play as.

"Strawberry Shepard" lives on, saving the galaxy and looking fine while doing it.  I wonder if you start with all the gear you acquired in ME1 and at the "paragon" level she's achieved.  I am so into this news.

This is non-news.  Bioware has always stated that Mass Effect will be a trilogy, and that you will be able to carry your character forward through all three games.

This is seriously great news, but I'm still waiting to hear from bioware about the atrocious inventory system.

Won't somebody please think of the inventory system???

This feature would be even better if you could modify certain things about your existing character such as hair style/color, to reflect the dark path you're about to descend upon :)

Mass Effect was the best RPG since KOTOR,  in terms of engaging story, and incredible characters. I cannot wait for ME 2...
Is it confirmed for 2009???

ME 2 Will almost certainly NOT come out in 2009. I don't think there is any date yet, and bioware, though awesome, is not known for getting games out quickly, or even on schedule.

Maybe I'll actually have to go and acquire my save file from my buddy's XBox and steal his copy of the game for a while.  At the time this came out his 360 was in the living room so I played on it...sadness overwhelming now that he's moved out and about half the games I bought since I lived with him have their save files on his harddrive.

Anyways, good to know.  Also, to the people who like to point out they already knew this and that this is "non-news"...guess what, it is news to the people who didn't already know it.

I felt this was the only way they could make Mass Effect 2 continue the storyline in any meaningful way. Hyrcania Shepard will live on (got her to level 57 so far...so close to 60 and I haven't even gotten to Virmire yet - just finished Feros - and yes, it is a new game+)

Okay maybe you people don't realize something.  Notice it never actually says you get to PLAY AS your Shepard from the first game.  Maybe (almost definately), he/she will just be there.

Doesn't make a lot of sense to me, though. It's an intensely character-driven plot, and Shepard talks about [SPOILER] finding and kicking the Reapers' collective ass, which would make no sense to just abandon that obvious sequel lead.

I should add that player expectation does often play a big part in making a sequel - think of how many people would be totally disappointed not playing as Shepard again, even if the save won't transfer. Disappointment = lost sales.

All that proves is that there's some Asari chick who thinks she sees Shepard.  I still say you don't play as the Shepard from the first game.  I would say that it's a trick that won't fool anyone, but seeing as so many people have been fooled by it, it's clearly a much more clever trick than I'm giving it credit for in my mind.  The fact that remains is regardless of any storytelling the game has to offer, you can't put the super badass decked out character from the end of the first game into the beginning of this new one without messing up the player experience, and it would surprise me greatly if I was proven wrong on this one.  Until then though, I still say that Shepard from the first game is dead and you're a totally new person that just happens to look the same as the custom (by the way) character that you controlled the first time around.  While I'm at it, there's also nothing in that one line of dialogue that proves you play as whoever that Asari chick is talking to in the first place.

That's odd to hear, Brad. One of the most impressive aspects, I found to be, in Mass Effect, was how in each of my three playthroughs, my very custom Shepard looked like the game was built from the ground up with my created character in mind. I've never seen another game manage that, nor do I think I'll see another game do that for a long time to come.
