Okay so since school started this year, the only thing my friend has talked about is Borderlands. So when the 20th of October rolled around I knew that he was going to be bouncing off the walls during the hours of school before he could go out and pick up his pre-order copy. But to my suprise, he was not even at school on the 20th. That night I saw he was playing it on Xbox Live and was already level 20. He told me it was worth missing the day and kept going on about how Brick can punch the crap out of everything. Well as the week rolled on I noticed that even during class all he did was read his Borderlands guide by hiding it under textbooks. He gets really good grades but I feel like its becoming a big distraction. Should I have a conversation with him about it or do you think it would be better to let it run its course?

Borderlands is a first-person shooter RPG from Gearbox Software that puts players into the shoes of one of four playable characters as they traverse the hostile planet of Pandora in search of a mysterious "Vault," said to contain priceless unknown riches and alien technologies.
My friend likes Borderlands a bit too much.
Dude, that game is real good though. I would say he doesn't have a problem, but he did buy a guide, and doing that makes you a bad person.
" If he still gets good grades why does it matter? "It'd be too early to tell if he's still getting good grades considering the game just came out and it's unlikely that a large amount of tests and assignments have been turned in.
If I were you I'd address your friend about it. However, be sure to first express that you understand him, that he's a gamer really excited about this particular game and it just came out etc. Then gently suggest to him that perhaps he should be spending less time on the game. Confronting him directly about it would probably anger him (because he's irrational at the moment) and drive him even further away.
When I was in highschool I skipped class to play videogames among other other things. I don't think it's that big of a deal, I mean come on, it's high school.
He will burn out eventually. I'm pretty addicted to it as well, but once he hits level 50, he will probably stop playing it for awhile.
tke him for a jog. happend to me with some games awhile back and my friends had to force me out the house i for got what other ppl looked like (massive exaggeration)
" Dude, that game is real good though. I would say he doesn't have a problem, but he did buy a guide, and doing that makes you a bad person. "o yes it is bad especially in these types of days where a lot of people are starting to write guides on the internet. i think that people are starting to make E-guides so they are PDF guides.
i just think that u should wait until the next time he starts seeing graded things. if they are bad then maybe u should start worrying about it. lol this kind of reminds me back when i played wow in high school. when i first started i was like ok this game is cool then once i started getting higher in level all i could think about was wow. my grades were alright, but then college. i do bad. i don't play wow anymore.
" He's fine, if hes still that bad a couple months from now or even one month from now that might be a little queer. However I've gone through many gaming obsessions and they just come and go. "This is spot on. These things pass. No offense intended, but most young people have short attention spans in these matters, and while Borderlands maybe all he is thinking about these days, in a month or so, it will be replaced by something else. I suggest you just nod, say "oh really?" a lot, and wait for the obsession to fade away. Unless he's passed up an opportunity to spend time with a woman for the game, then I wouldn't worry too much about it.
" That's a little extreme. Even I wouldn't skip out on school just to play a video game. "I would agree but then when i was in high school i used to go home to play my snes..... lol
" INTERVENTION, INTERVENTION, INTERVENTION!!! You got to sit him down and point out all his faults. This is the key to a successful intervention. That and maybe some wine in a can. "You might need to be armed as well....
But on a serious note, I expect he will come down after a while, but keep an eye on him. You sound like a good friend.
" @CL60 said:I used to skip all the time, but my parents didn't care because they knew High School was a joke. I skipped 27 days total my senior year, Its weird though seeing I haven't skipped a single college class intentionally yet even though it's much easier to do, and this is my Junior year." @natetodamax said:my parents would kill before they would let me do that. "" That's a little extreme. Even I wouldn't skip out on school just to play a video game. "Me neither. But to each their own I guess. "
He's just one of those obsessive people...soon he'll get something else to focus on. He's like me times 1000.
" That's a little extreme. Even I wouldn't skip out on school just to play a video game. "same, I had a friend skip for halo 3 but i've never skipped to get my hands on a game early
Well I bailed on work to play Uncharted 2 lol (gotta use up those paid time off on something)
I have decided to wait on writing a paper, in order to play a few rounds of UC2 online or whatever. In the end I just wake up early the next day and write it before class. Still getting A's so yeah, its worked for me for the last 4 years of college heh.
" Man, when I was a kid I used to bring my Link to the Past strategy guide to school and hum the Overworld theme to myself all day. Look at me now! I'm doing fine! 20 years old without a job and have lots of debt! I turned out normal enough. "is that really any worse than 24 years old, with a job and lots of debt? I remember bringing the instruction book for Quake to read at lunch in 5th grade lol.
Just let it run his course. Back when I was in high school, I skipped the day that Halo 3 came out. I was young and dumb back then. Don't worry too much it'll pass in a little bit.

If your friends amount of play time has an effect on his life, you should let that happen. Some people need to learn that way. Otherwise you are running the risk of being an annoying friend. Some people can slack and get by with good grades.
