Borderlands breaks the mould of other recent shooting games by having a lengthy single player experience with the option of co-op. The role-playing game aspects of levelling up and the barrage of loot unite with this shooting game to bring an addictive experience. The game's story tells of residents on the barren planet of Pandora on the search for a fabled secret vault rumoured to be filled with unseen alien technology. The player controls one person joining the hunt, but after about an hour th...

OK, now you're just spoiling us 3

Now at the third piece of DLC for the acclaimed RPG/FPS hybrid, Borderlands. The Secret Armory of General Knoxx gives the players a whole host of new quests, loot, vehicles, environments, enemies and so much more. All with a shockingly modest price-tag.DLC in general has had a very controversial run through the timeline of our advancements with games. Usually they're loathed for its blatant design of squeezing all the more cash out of the consumer, though sometimes there stands out the DLC that ...

Humor, character building, and guns. Lots of guns. 0

I've been following Borderlands since it's unveil back in September 2007. Since then, it's been clear from the start what kind of game this was going to be. Sure, the art style changed, but Gearbox has delievered a product that does exactly what they said it would.  In Borderlands, the player chooses one of 4 characters. There is a Siren, a Berserker, a Hunter, and a Soldier character. All 4 characters have a unique action skill that is gained at level 5, and from there the similarities between ...

    Shooter + RPG = Fan Service 2

Everything about this game is tight, and it has the most solid offering as a game I have seen in a while. Gearbox not only met my high expectations of Borderlands, but ultimately succeeded them. On the plus side:  1. it is a more solid game compared to Hellgate.  2. It carries most of the strengths of Fallout 3 and includes splitscreen multiplayer and singlescreen online.  3. Also, as far as Diablo is concerned, Borderlands sticks with the fine line of eliminating necessary exposition while main...

Zombie Island is a healthy DLC that won't disappoint 0

Hey, Borderlands is a pretty cool game. A stylish art style, loot, 4 distinct character classes, and more loot is enough to attract lots of people. But what are you going to do when you've completed nearly every side quest in the game and have gotten the best guns ever? The Zombie Island of Dr. Ned is a "healthy" DLC, meaning it offers enough to satisfy those that need more original Borderlands content while managing to not come up dry. Zombie Island takes place on..... Zombie Island. It's run b...

There's always room for more loot 0

I never really liked Diablo back in the day. Repeatedly clicking on enemies under the promise of more loot was never really my idea of fun. So when Gearbox stated that Borderlands was "like Diablo with guns", I was a bit hesitant. But after playing Borderlands for myself, I've realized one key difference- this is a first person shooter, and a good one at that. In other words, Borderlands fuels its loot lust with some exciting shooting action, and manages to be a great multiplayer game that a lot...

    Borderlands is Borderline amazing. 0

Borderlands is the most unique game that I've played this year in terms of gameplay mechanics and visual style, it's certainly different compared to most major releases this year. Initially I didn't know what to think of Borderlands and didn't expect much of it which is why I didn't purchase it on the its day of release. After sinking around 20+ hours into the game I found myself pleasantly surprised and enjoyed the experience.Borderlands takes place on the desert planet of Pandora and opens wit...

Moxxi's Underdome Offers Waves and Waves of Frustration 1

Mad Moxxi's Underdome Riot has all the style and personality expected from a title like Borderlands, however it lacks compelling gameplay and wears thin in the long run. If you haven't heard it before, it's worth saying again. This DLC pack is not about leveling up, finding cool guns, or building weapon proficiencies. The Underdome is specifically all about killing enemies in a variety of ways and seeing how much you can survive before calling it quits. The name of the game is wave combat. Enemi...

    It Goes to Eleven 0

Initially, The Secret Armory of General Knoxx acts as a "man-check" of both your equipment and skills in Borderlands; if you don't have high-quality weapons and know when to use what kind of elemental weapons, the Crimson Lance patrols and drones that populate the early areas of the game are going to keep you busy for quite some time. Like all of the DLC released thus far, General Knoxx caters enemies to a player's level, but I found the DLC to be much more manageable with a level 37 char...

A Night With Mad Moxxi 0

This Review was originally posted at:   http://invertedyaxis.blogspot.com/2010/01/night-with-mad-moxxi.html  I spent Saturday night in Mad Moxxi's Underdome Riot, the most recent pack of DLC for Borderlands. I think after playing through about 55 rounds of punishment I can agree with a lot of the reviews circulating out there. For those of you who don't know, Madd Moxxi's Underdome Riot is Borderland's attempt at a "horde mode" or "firefight" mode. However, they take out any XP progression (thou...

    Enter the madness 0

Borderlands is a game that promised to merge the FPS and RPG genres, and it's success is largely due to the fact that the developers didn't allow the use of either genre to reduce the effectiveness of the other.  While in other games one may outweigh the other, such as Fallout 3's robust RPG elements, Borderlands really shines because of the level of balance that exists between its two halves.  Really, there are so many good things about Borderlands that, when its performing at it's best, there ...

    Borderlands Review 0

Borderlands is the type of game that it first glance might not look like a very impressive game, but that first glance could not be further from the truth. The truth is that this game will have you glued to it through at least one if not two complete play-through. The story is that there exists this place of power, wealth, and women, and if you can reach it, all can be yours. In order to reach it though you're going to have to go through some real nasty enemies to collect pieces for the Vault Ke...

The Zombie Island of Dr Ned gives you around 5-6 hours of more Borderlands, but only the lesser parts.       Dude, when did Zoey dye her hair? The new enviroment and laugh worthy characters and dialogue is what you should be expecting to have this stand out from the original Borderlands. Set after the original's story, the games own Narrator Marcus Kinkaid tells the story of the evil Dr Ned and how he is so not Dr Zed in disguise, in the essence of a bedtime story.  Right from the start you're...

An FPS for an RPG player... 0

Before I begin this review, I need to point out two things.  One, I am not an avid fan of FPS games.  I've played some Halo (which I hated), some Killzone 2 on my PS3 (which I tolerated), and some Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare (which I really liked), but I don't go near a new FPS unless it's introduced to me by one of my more well-trusted amigos.  I don't think FPS games are bad, they're just not my thing (although I've been on the Borderlands hype train for a few months now, admittedly).  I al...

A tragic tale of a good concept going wrong 6

For a DLC pack that was announced even before the original game was live, it's quite relieving that Zombie Island of Dr. Ned isn't just asset recycling. In a whopping 1GB package, Gearbox delivers a great deal of new artwork, funny writing and really excellent voicework, so at least in that regard, Zombie Island doesn't disappoint. The world and quests are once more filled with silly puns and pop-culture references, which continues the base game's tradition pretty well.  Everything else also doe...

The best ARPG since Diablo 2- 0

Borderlands is a unique game, its contains lots of elements from First Person Shooters like Halo and has a setting very similiar to last years "Fallout 3"  but at heart Borderlands is an Action RPG.  The game sets you as one of four different vault hunters- The Hunter who specializes in sniping and commands a bloodwing pet which can be used to attack enemies. The Siren who has powerful elemental attacks and can phasewalk past (or through) foesThe Soldier who can use a turret and specializes in a ...

    It Borderlands... WITH ZOMBIES!!! 0

You know what people like? Zombies! Nearly everyone loves them and their brain eating ways. All the shambling around also makes them pretty good target practise for first person shooters and the sight of a crowd of them exploding? Poetry in motion. Borderlands, the FPS/RPG from Gearbox which I loved on its release, has just had its first piece of DLC released onto XBL and PSN and its rather good. The Zombie Island of Dr Ned takes you to an island that is, as the name suggests, infested with zom...

    Zombies ate my Jacobs 0

Zombie Island of Dr Ned (who is totally not Dr Zed from the last story) is the first DLC pack for Borderlands. The pack sends you to the dreary swamps and forests of Jacob's Cove, which have been overrun by the living impaired. The storyline behind all the zombie-slaying is as corny as the classic horror cinema it parodies. This works in the pack's favour, however, as Borderland's offbeat sense of humour translates well to the cheesy premise of a mad doctor starting a zombie outbreak. The humou...

Lots of fun for a good price! 0

I really didn't know what to expect from a DLC as this is the first single player expansion I've bought, but was not disappointed at all.  The main story is funny and just long enough to be worth the purchase. I'd like a couple more sidemissions though, but I'm not complaining. Dr. Ned (who totally isn't Dr. Zed) makes an appearance and is the main source for your missions, and T.K. Baha makes a welcome return, although you have to look a bit for him.  My only grind would be the travel system, y...

A great game, with a few issues. 0

What would happen if Diablo and Halo made love? A strange question, I know, but Borderlands, the cell-shaded loot fest from Gearbox Software, has tried to blend the action and gunplay from today’s First-Person Shooters with the experience, leveling mechanics and loot drops found in modern Role-Playing Games. The question is: Does it work? After a short summation of why you have come to Pandora, a dirty and deserted planet, you choose one of four characters, any of which has unique talents and s...

Why have twenty guns when you could have - millions? That's the question behind role-playing-shooter Borderlands. But Borderlands brings more than just an excessive amount of choice for blowing your foes away. But there's still one legend left on Pandora:...

If I ever meet the Gearbox Employee who designed Mad Moxxi's Underdome Riot, I am going to break their knee.  This really should have Unlocked something useful, like a refund. I might have to use my Certificate of +1 Baddassness, but it will be worth it to inflict an equal level of pain back at them.  I really just have a hard time conceptualizing why they felt the need to take a game whose core value is "Always be Leveling", and the constant anticipation of finding a new version of one of the...

A remarkable DLC to come out of Gearbox for Borderlands, The Zombie Island of Dr. Ned, takes you to an Island owned by the Jacobs corporation that has suddenly gone under the influence of a cannibalistic government. Yes that's right Zombies. Now it seems like every game nowadays has to have zombies in it so to say that this DLC is groundbreaking would be incorrect. Although the reason to purchase this little $10 addition to a great game would be for story and it gives that to you 10 fold. Great ...

Buy it.  That's all that really needs to be said.    If you are looking at this game thinking "yeah it's an FPS but I don't know if I'd be into this one," trust me, you will be into it.  Those were the exact words I said as it built up to release day and I've had this game for two days and can't get enough of it.  As a matter of fact, as soon as I'm done writing this review I'm going BACK to my 360 and kicking my wife off the TV.    My initial hangups:  lots of missions, graphics not "realistic,...

Feels Like A Homework Assignment 0

I love Borderlands.  There is no better feeling then killing a midget with a shotgun.  When a game like Borderlands comes along I feel the need to unlock every achievement in the game.  Sadly however The Underdome has achievements, and that is about the only reward you will get for playing it.  I find myself looking for ways to somehow possibly shorten the time it takes to play this DLC by playing with a friend who is at a lower level.  While playing with friends in this DLC and talking about ho...

A fine use of a few weeks of your life 0

People have been talking about crossing an FPS with an MMO for a while now and the game that usually springs to mind is Huxley. With that nowhere in sight, the bar has already been set very high by Borderlands. Combining an incredibly solid shooter with the quest structure of an MMO, a great set of random drops and a well implemented levelling system has worked out really well and made for a pretty unique experience.  I've spent a little over 30 hours with Borderlands, finishing the quest and al...

I was a bit skeptical on picking this title up at first as I prefer FPS games with lots of realism and intensive graphics. I've always enjoyed cel-shading but never thought it suited shooter games. However, this game combines the two beautifully in a package that delivers both visually pleasing surroundings and a rewarding notion that your money was spent wisely. At first I wanted to get the hang of the game and figure things out before I attempted online co-op and embarassed myself.. Once I did...

    Mildly Amusing, Ultimately Lackluster 4

Borderlands is a game that tries hard but ultimately falls by the wayside.  The problem, ultimately, is that the game is essentially a B title.  It's right in the middle of the B range, which typically refers to titles that are OK but not excellent.   It makes a number of valiant attempts to elevate itself above the B status but ultimately fails.  Borderlands has a number of original aspects.  It has a rather gorgeous graphics style, with art reminiscent of comic book and artists like Moebius.  ...

    Role-Playing Horde Mode 0

Aside from an in-game bank to house all of the guns you've likely been accumulating while playing Borderlands, Mad Moxxi's Underdome Riot is essentially an attempt at capitalizing on the market popularized by Gears of War 2's Horde and Halo 3: ODST's Firefight modes -- sending wave after wave of increasingly vicious fodder towards players -- and adapting it to Borderlands' architecture.  However, asking consumers to pay $10 for a mode that's already included in other big-budget shooters on top ...

    More killer, less filler. 2

The latest DLC for Borderlands, The Underdome Riot of Mad Moxxi, does not include any new quests. What it DOES include, is a whole shitton of bad guys for you to kill. As someone who has spent 75 hours on my berserker alone, this was both dissapointing and a breath of fresh air. It's almost sublime to just enter one of the arenas included in the underdome, unholster your gun, and kill until you can't kill anymore. I can think of no better way to relieve quest fatigue than this killfest.  Mad Mox...

First off I just want to say that I really love playing Borderlands.  Everything except Mad Moxxi's Underdome Riot.  They really created a huge waste of money for fans of this game.  The loot drops are not worth the effort and you receive zero experience.    Oh, but you get a bank.  So you are literally buying a $10 bank for a game that if you already played through twice and have a level 50 character, what good is the bank at that point anyway?  You've already sunk countless hours into the gam...

Hot on the heels of the first downloadable addition to Borderlands comes Gearbox’ second offering, and is hardly as good as the first. In “Madd Moxxi’s Underdome Riot” you are invited to go to The Underdome and partake in a series of wave deathmatch against enemies and bosses from the main game. It also adds a bank to store items in, and lastly there is a quest which grants a skillpoint as a reward (or two if you do the quest in both playthroughs).  Starting out the ...

I'm probably going to end up keeping this review short, Borderlands was an awesome game while it lasted, I spent 20 hours going through the game on my first play-through enjoying everything, all the environments, quests, enemies, weapons, etc. When I beat it the first time I was kinda pissed at the ending, where's the vault?, 100 $$$ is all I get for killing that huge easy monster?, that's bullcrap. Good, but very flawed 0

Borderlands was a game that spent a long time in the making. The idea behind it was always essentially “Diablo: The shooter”, but it was originally a more serious looking game. I can’t say that I never wonder what Borderlands would have been like if this was what actually came out. I get a very distinct feeling that the project almost “died” and suddenly, someone decided to keep the cover, gut the story, and apply a fresh coat of paint. I have a sneaking suspicion that the story might h...

The lack of a viable narrative is disappointing, but that's OK 0

If there’s one thing that we as gamers have proven time and time again, it’s that we all have a collective, insatiable lust for color-coded loot drops and shooting dudes.  Mostly, we’ve had to split our attention between two entirely different styles of game to quench the thirst, but a few sporadic releases have attempted to bring these mechanics together.  Hellgate: London comes immediately to mind.  None of them have managed to get it right, though.  Well, until now. If I was forced to sum Borderlands up in one sentence, it'd probably have something to do with my love of both online co-operative gameplay and RPG-style character building. Those, along with the game's charming sense of humor and strong graphical style, are the strengths of this game. The most immediately noticeable trait of Borderlands is its cell-shaded style of graphics. The visuals were only designed as such due to a change later in the game's development, and the change pays off. Borderland...

Moxxi made me a better player 0

Trailing shortly after Borderlands' excellent first DLC pack, The Zombie Island of Dr. Ned, it's easy to write off Mad Moxxi's Underdome riot at first glance due to its absence of carrot-on-a-stick RPG character progression.  Enemies don't reward experience, drop loot, or even let you build weapon proficiency.  And while Borderlands has never been strong on narrative, Mad Moxxi's story is even more minimalist.   But sink a few hours into the arena challenges and you'll eventually discover how re...

Developed by Gearbox studios, Borderlands stood as quite a new concept in the gaming world, boasting multiple characters, each with RPG-like skill trees, a pleasing cel-shaded look, a huge world, plenty of humour and ‘bazillions’ of guns for the player to access, all within an first-person shooter. Needless to say, it turned many heads, especially with its co-op.
