"Roleplaying Shooter" is the moniker Gearbox Software came up with for their new game, Borderlands. It pretty much says it all. Take the fast-paced, twitch gameplay of a modern shooter and combine it with levelling, skill points, co-operative play, and thousands upon thousands of guns. If that sounds like it would make an excellent game, it does. There's a definite addictive quality to Borderlands' well-paced questing and good looks, and people who have any interest whatsoever in this synthesis...

There's always room for more loot 0

I never really liked Diablo back in the day. Repeatedly clicking on enemies under the promise of more loot was never really my idea of fun. So when Gearbox stated that Borderlands was "like Diablo with guns", I was a bit hesitant. But after playing Borderlands for myself, I've realized one key difference- this is a first person shooter, and a good one at that. In other words, Borderlands fuels its loot lust with some exciting shooting action, and manages to be a great multiplayer game that a lot...

Enter the madness 0

Borderlands is a game that promised to merge the FPS and RPG genres, and it's success is largely due to the fact that the developers didn't allow the use of either genre to reduce the effectiveness of the other.  While in other games one may outweigh the other, such as Fallout 3's robust RPG elements, Borderlands really shines because of the level of balance that exists between its two halves.  Really, there are so many good things about Borderlands that, when its performing at it's best, there ...

Borderlands Review 0

Borderlands is the type of game that it first glance might not look like a very impressive game, but that first glance could not be further from the truth. The truth is that this game will have you glued to it through at least one if not two complete play-through. The story is that there exists this place of power, wealth, and women, and if you can reach it, all can be yours. In order to reach it though you're going to have to go through some real nasty enemies to collect pieces for the Vault Ke...

An FPS for an RPG player... 0

Before I begin this review, I need to point out two things.  One, I am not an avid fan of FPS games.  I've played some Halo (which I hated), some Killzone 2 on my PS3 (which I tolerated), and some Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare (which I really liked), but I don't go near a new FPS unless it's introduced to me by one of my more well-trusted amigos.  I don't think FPS games are bad, they're just not my thing (although I've been on the Borderlands hype train for a few months now, admittedly).  I al...

The best ARPG since Diablo 2- 0

Borderlands is a unique game, its contains lots of elements from First Person Shooters like Halo and has a setting very similiar to last years "Fallout 3"  but at heart Borderlands is an Action RPG.  The game sets you as one of four different vault hunters- The Hunter who specializes in sniping and commands a bloodwing pet which can be used to attack enemies. The Siren who has powerful elemental attacks and can phasewalk past (or through) foesThe Soldier who can use a turret and specializes in a ...

A great game, with a few issues. 0

What would happen if Diablo and Halo made love? A strange question, I know, but Borderlands, the cell-shaded loot fest from Gearbox Software, has tried to blend the action and gunplay from today’s First-Person Shooters with the experience, leveling mechanics and loot drops found in modern Role-Playing Games. The question is: Does it work? After a short summation of why you have come to Pandora, a dirty and deserted planet, you choose one of four characters, any of which has unique talents and s...

Borderlands Review 0

Why have twenty guns when you could have - millions? That's the question behind role-playing-shooter Borderlands. But Borderlands brings more than just an excessive amount of choice for blowing your foes away. Vehicles, classes and quirky characters are all present in this Science-Fiction role player that feels like a first person Diablo.Far in the future, Pandora is a planet reported to be packed with riches, but later found to be a barren wasteland. But there's still one legend left on Pandora:...

Borderlands Review 0

Borderlands has a sleek look, great gameplay, and terrific sound.GraphicsI have been closely following Borderlands every since it was officially announced back in 07. I'm not going to lie I liked the old art style, but not because it was better looking, but because it was a safe bet. You know what you are getting when you get that gray and brown art style. I cannot stress how happy i was when i saw the first screenshot of the new art style i was astonished by how amazingly good the game looked n...

A fine use of a few weeks of your life 0

People have been talking about crossing an FPS with an MMO for a while now and the game that usually springs to mind is Huxley. With that nowhere in sight, the bar has already been set very high by Borderlands. Combining an incredibly solid shooter with the quest structure of an MMO, a great set of random drops and a well implemented levelling system has worked out really well and made for a pretty unique experience.  I've spent a little over 30 hours with Borderlands, finishing the quest and al...

Who's shocked? This guy is... 0

This game had me in between.  I didn't think it would be worth all my money, but it looked so good!  So, with this black friday rolling around, I decided to grab it up and give it a try.  Probably the best decision in the last two months I have made.  This game is incredibly addicting and you will not realize the amount of hours you will put in, on the first playthrough!  Everything just feels right going into the game.  The controls work perfectly, the loot system is fun, and the presentation j...

Glad I picked it up 0

I was a bit skeptical on picking this title up at first as I prefer FPS games with lots of realism and intensive graphics. I've always enjoyed cel-shading but never thought it suited shooter games. However, this game combines the two beautifully in a package that delivers both visually pleasing surroundings and a rewarding notion that your money was spent wisely. At first I wanted to get the hang of the game and figure things out before I attempted online co-op and embarassed myself.. Once I did...

Borderlands! 0

I'm probably going to end up keeping this review short, Borderlands was an awesome game while it lasted, I spent 20 hours going through the game on my first play-through enjoying everything, all the environments, quests, enemies, weapons, etc. When I beat it the first time I was kinda pissed at the ending, where's the vault?, 100 $$$ is all I get for killing that huge easy monster?, that's bullcrap. So then I loaded up play-through #2, beat that in 10 - 15 hours, so in total I now have 35 hours ...

Moxxi made me a better player 0

Trailing shortly after Borderlands' excellent first DLC pack, The Zombie Island of Dr. Ned, it's easy to write off Mad Moxxi's Underdome riot at first glance due to its absence of carrot-on-a-stick RPG character progression.  Enemies don't reward experience, drop loot, or even let you build weapon proficiency.  And while Borderlands has never been strong on narrative, Mad Moxxi's story is even more minimalist.   But sink a few hours into the arena challenges and you'll eventually discover how re...

The lack of a viable narrative is disappointing, but that's OK 0

If there’s one thing that we as gamers have proven time and time again, it’s that we all have a collective, insatiable lust for color-coded loot drops and shooting dudes.  Mostly, we’ve had to split our attention between two entirely different styles of game to quench the thirst, but a few sporadic releases have attempted to bring these mechanics together.  Hellgate: London comes immediately to mind.  None of them have managed to get it right, though.  Well, until now. Borderlands com...

Good, but very flawed 0

Borderlands was a game that spent a long time in the making. The idea behind it was always essentially “Diablo: The shooter”, but it was originally a more serious looking game.I can’t say that I never wonder what Borderlands would have been like if this was what actually came out. I get a very distinct feeling that the project almost “died” and suddenly, someone decided to keep the cover, gut the story, and apply a fresh coat of paint. I have a sneaking suspicion that the story might have origin...

Borderlands: No Rest For The Wicked 0

Developed by Gearbox studios, Borderlands stood as quite a new concept in the gaming world, boasting multiple characters, each with RPG-like skill trees, a pleasing cel-shaded look, a huge world, plenty of humour and ‘bazillions’ of guns for the player to access, all within an first-person shooter. Needless to say, it turned many heads, especially with its co-op. I missed out on the prime-time co-op community play, but even so, let's dive in and see just what in the hell we're dealing with!...ye...

Killing things is more fun with friends. 0

If I was forced to sum Borderlands up in one sentence, it'd probably have something to do with my love of both online co-operative gameplay and RPG-style character building. Those, along with the game's charming sense of humor and strong graphical style, are the strengths of this game. The most immediately noticeable trait of Borderlands is its cell-shaded style of graphics. The visuals were only designed as such due to a change later in the game's development, and the change pays off. Borderland...

Cooperative Gem 0

For a game that came out four years ago, I’m giving this all five stars. There are some quirks when managing your friends and getting a game going with your desired character, but they’re small prices to pay. Four players on the same team playing different roles with voice chat built into the game is super fun. (I did, however, use TeamSpeak instead. It’s nice to be able to talk while we’re navigating the game’s menus.) The graphics impressed me because I had not been a fan of cell shading in t...

87 bazillion... funs! 0

Borderlands breaks the mould of other recent shooting games by having a lengthy single player experience with the option of co-op. The role-playing game aspects of levelling up and the barrage of loot unite with this shooting game to bring an addictive experience. The game's story tells of residents on the barren planet of Pandora on the search for a fabled secret vault rumoured to be filled with unseen alien technology. The player controls one person joining the hunt, but after about an hour th...

Humor, character building, and guns. Lots of guns. 0

I've been following Borderlands since it's unveil back in September 2007. Since then, it's been clear from the start what kind of game this was going to be. Sure, the art style changed, but Gearbox has delievered a product that does exactly what they said it would.  In Borderlands, the player chooses one of 4 characters. There is a Siren, a Berserker, a Hunter, and a Soldier character. All 4 characters have a unique action skill that is gained at level 5, and from there the similarities between ...

Shooter + RPG = Fan Service 0

Everything about this game is tight, and it has the most solid offering as a game I have seen in a while. Gearbox not only met my high expectations of Borderlands, but ultimately succeeded them. On the plus side:  1. it is a more solid game compared to Hellgate.  2. It carries most of the strengths of Fallout 3 and includes splitscreen multiplayer and singlescreen online.  3. Also, as far as Diablo is concerned, Borderlands sticks with the fine line of eliminating necessary exposition while main...

Borderlands is Borderline amazing. 0

Borderlands is the most unique game that I've played this year in terms of gameplay mechanics and visual style, it's certainly different compared to most major releases this year. Initially I didn't know what to think of Borderlands and didn't expect much of it which is why I didn't purchase it on the its day of release. After sinking around 20+ hours into the game I found myself pleasantly surprised and enjoyed the experience.Borderlands takes place on the desert planet of Pandora and opens wit...

RPG and FPS made a baby...and it's a damn awesome one too. 0

For those of you who have never heard of Borderlands, it can best be described as a loot gathering and RPG experience not unlike that of Diablo, mixed with standard FPS gameplay mechanics from popular games like Halo and Call of Duty Throw in a strong co-op focus, and you get Borderlands. Gearbox, the developers of the game, has made it clear that the blending of genres was their focus for the game. In fact, the first half of this review title is a quote straight out of one of their previews. Th...

A review for the borderline gamer. 0

Buy it.  That's all that really needs to be said.    If you are looking at this game thinking "yeah it's an FPS but I don't know if I'd be into this one," trust me, you will be into it.  Those were the exact words I said as it built up to release day and I've had this game for two days and can't get enough of it.  As a matter of fact, as soon as I'm done writing this review I'm going BACK to my 360 and kicking my wife off the TV.    My initial hangups:  lots of missions, graphics not "realistic,...

Now then, this is going to be a speed review, i'll mention some good points and some bad points and then draw a conclusion.  The good-shit: -Has an awesome attitude  -Great visuals -Lots o' Loot -A great shooter, at it's core  The bad-shit: -Story? -Repetitive (includes voice over work, enemies, etc...)-Horrible ending  All in all I will say this, it wasn't great but it wasn't bad. It wasn't fun but it wasn't boring. The point is that Gearbox could have had a great new IP with this game and they...

Borderlands does exactly what it sets out to do, and does it well 0

There are a lot of first-person shooters out there on the market, so when I first heard about Borderlands, I was a bit skeptical. “It's just an another shooter, except with more guns that all feel the same.” I was delighted to find, however, that I couldn't have been more wrong. Borderlands is a focused shooter that melds RPG and shooter mechanics together to great effect, and offers a lengthy adventure that can get really addictive and is mostly driven by the player's desire to bec...

Mildly Amusing, Ultimately Lackluster 0

Borderlands is a game that tries hard but ultimately falls by the wayside.  The problem, ultimately, is that the game is essentially a B title.  It's right in the middle of the B range, which typically refers to titles that are OK but not excellent.   It makes a number of valiant attempts to elevate itself above the B status but ultimately fails.  Borderlands has a number of original aspects.  It has a rather gorgeous graphics style, with art reminiscent of comic book and artists like Moebius.  ...

Borderlands (Xbox 360, 2009) 0

Graphics - 3/5  Audio - 3/5  Presentation - 2/5  Controls - 4/5  Overall - 1.5/5    Borderlands is a game I really wanted to love.  I followed all the previews and saw all the positive praise being heaped upon it I made the plunge to explore Pandora after the holidays.  What sounded like a great idea on paper turned out to be a poorly executed shell of a game that shows you everything it has to offer in the first 5 minutes.      Do you enjoy a good story or even basic context for your gaming act...

A missed opportunity 0

Borderlands was the underdog coming into this holiday season and while it's sudden rise to power is warranted, it is perhaps a bit over hyped. I really did love the core mechanics of Borderlands, the FPS action with integrated RPG elements works really well and the loot is fantastic. However, the missions and story are incredibly disappointing especially when you consider how cool it could have been. Which is too bad, because this could have been one of the best experiences of the year....

Love this game 0

This game has been awesome to play through with friends. I am far from a competitive gamer but Borderlands provides an amazing environment to mess around in while also complete objectives. Every time I turn the game on I know that I am in for a great time! The thing that adds a new dimension to the game is how the classes work and interact. I have been playing through with a friend who is the soldier class while I am the Beserker. Together we can systematically work through any environment. If w...

Borderlands is a joyous co-op romp. 0

Its impressive when games manages to embrace alot of elements from different genres while still providing a unique experience and Borderlands is indeed the case with this. It offers satisfying and comfortable first person combat with slick controls that games like Call of Duty have beaten into our muscle memory, dig a little deeper and you will also come across the character progression and loot hunting reminiscent of games like Diablo and World Of Warcraft. Toss in absurd humor and co-op droppi...

Great game, But has some issues 0

I bought this game the day it came out. When I first played it i thought it was amazing. Then when I went to save and come back and play later it wasn't saved. Each time I would hit save and exit like it says to, But it just wouldn't save kept saying it was corrupted. Otherwise this game has tons of action and a awesome twisted kick to it. Just love it!...

Fun but with a crash 0

BORDERLANDS is fun game but over run with a bad story and a very small replay value.  Graphics: The graphics are different from your average game.  Much different.  It sets itself in a cartoon like world where you are a cartoon like character.  But don't take it the wrong way when I say "cartoon".  It is not your adverage cartoon you would expect on tv on a Saturday morning, this is gory.  Limbs, random bodies, hangings and brains make this a bloody game.  It is hard to compare these graphics to...

Amazingly Addicting Game 0

This game has to be one of the best games of all time! the story line is great and you cant finish it in one day. Another thing i liked about this game is the amount of guns and "mods" (Class and Grenade) that are in this game. You will never find the same one twice. When you go through the game you get backpack upgrades and you level up which makes you person better. When you beat the game the first time you will most likely be aroung level 35, so to rank up more you have to go into play throug...

wow this was bad 0

I suppose my biggest complaint about this game is repetitiveness and no story. why anyone would find shooting spawn points over and over till they get a level exciting is beyond me. the best part of the game is the art besides that its just predictable guns and lame story and repetitive game play.  I attempted to play through this game but found that even WOW had better quests lines then this junk. I could see playing this game with mates but by yourself?  No way I'd rather play gothic 3 then th...

Borderlands - Best Game Ever Made? 0

Have you ever played a game that is the offspring of a Role-Playing Game and a First Person Shooter? Then you must play Borderlands. Borderlands is by far the best game this reviewer has ever played. With enemies matching your level, it shall be a formidable challenge. With drops and loot also matching your level, as guns and upgrades will be better. If you are also low on health, enemies have a greater chance of dropping health.   As for the characters that you can play on Borderlands have thei...

Bored Lands 0

I can not believe this game was delayed so many times.  It feels rushed.  While it's not the worst game I have played this year, it is the most disapointing.  It's nothing like the game that Gearbox promised us.  The vehicle combat is awfull.  They control worse than a shopping trolley full of bricks.  Plus the level design is way to small to make the most of vehicles.  Which brings me on to my next gripe.  The level design is bad.  It's small and pokey.    The promise of a gazzilion guns in th...

made it to level 22, then quit 0

borderlands gets too much credit for its blend of rpg and shooter. im all for blending, but in borderlands there are too many yawning, menial runarounds (you spend WAY too much time scrounging for $20 and $30 cash bundles and ammo) like in a bad rpg. and there are severe limitations in the way of a fps. for example, when driving the dune buggy you cant even drive and aim in independent directions (in other words, where you aim - thats where your car turns to. makes for a lot of head on collision...

Way more addictive than it has any right to be. 0

It's a bit unfair reviewing the core Borderlands game by itself these days, considering the well-received DLC and the Game of the Year edition that now exist. Taken as a whole, Borderlands GOTY is a tremendous package, especially if discounted. But if you focus just on the base game itself, Borderlands' appeal doesn't shine quite as bright. This is pretty much the definitive guilty pleasure game, not unlike MMOs. Borderlands' combat is average for the genre and can get repetitive, especially co...
