Will Brutal Legend sell big numbers?
so not trolling but...
Does anyone actually think Brutal legenbd is going to sell in significant numbers?
At what point does a publisher cut their losses with a very talented, but not very marketable, developer/artist?
Are the costs and risks involved with game production too high for companies to gamble on artistic expression?
I think Tim Schafer tried to make something more marketable with Brutal Legend, with the inclusion of Jack Black and a range of well-known metal songs. But like Psychonauts, Brutal Legend is looking like an obscure game that, despite its metal trappings, may only draw a niche crowd. I think it will sell decently in a short burst, as it will certainly raise some curiosity, but it will probably get lost among Assassin's Creed 2, MW2 and other holiday hits.

"It won't be that obscure because EA are bringing a lot of attention to it., not like how Microsoft (pretty much single handedly) killed the Psychonauts and Majesco Entertainment just didn't understand it and so they marketed it wrong. I think Brutal legend will have a really good start but as November will roll by the numbers will slow down. I think in the long run Brutal Legend will be successful.
As long as EA markets the shit out of it then yes it should sell great,of course, Lorne Lanning might have something to say about that.
" It will do okay as long as EA does the advertising right. "Well They r really pushing it hard... You can see that on the amout of trailers and gameplay vids came out and Brad even went to an EA/Brütal Legend event to play the game....
But that is from the perspective of a gamer that visits multiple game site I don't know if the normal Madden/GTA player will know of this game....
I would like to see it sell really well, it seems like a really cool idea and something I would like to try, possibly buy.
I've got this strange feeling that it's going to do really well or that might just be the really optimistic side of me speaking. I think it might actually do ok because it's got Jack Black and lots of famous metal stars in it and the advertising campaign for it is genuinely quite funny. Also Tim Schaefer really deserves it.
I think it will raise some good money if the game plays well, I think a lot depends on how well they advertise in the right places, and if they manage to catch the wave of music games that will be out soon. Some consistent Jack Black promotion on TV will do it wonders.
I know a lot of people that are just buying it because of the name "Jack Black" he's fairly main-stream and if my friends are of any indication of the mass-market it'll probably sell pretty well.
I don't know if advertising will sell it though. There are people who are going to buy it on the artist-cred alone, hardcore gamers. Who else will be into this? It may be a good game, but with 5 Guitar Hero games, HALO, and Modern Warfare coming out around the same time the 15 year old male dollar probably won't reach to this game. Isn't that the next market behind the hardcore Tim fans? I just don't see it doing anything major.
What would be a success? 250,000 copies, 500,000?
Brutal legend has a lot of talent, money, and hype behind it. If it can't make it, will it be the death nail for EA's developer friendly stance of late?
I want to believe that the world of Video Games has matured to a point where the industry can nurture true talent and provide an outlet for that creativity in a way that will profitable. For example, Indie Music and Indie Films don't make a ton of money (outside of the odd success), but they are sustainable. I guess what I'm getting to is: given the huge monetary investment needed to produce a first quality current-gen product, what does a game need to sell to sustain itself? Is the iPhone and DS the bastion of the artist, or is there room on the top consoles?
I think a perfect example of a breakout artistic and financial success would be Bioshock. Will Brutal legend be this year's Bioshock?
A lot of people really don't care about metal or any good music in general. I have a sick feeling that this game will massively bomb.
I don't think so. There are way too many other games coming out in the same period of time that will take people's attention.
" This has an advantage over Psychonauts because of Jack Black. "Some would say that's a disadvantage.
Uncharted 2 will harm the PS3 side of things , thats almost a certainty...who the hell thought that releasing those two games on the same day was a good idea
I guess Jack Black and metal probably have more mass appeal then psychonauts did, It`ll probably sell allright
It'll sell better than Psychonauts, but I'd say the majority of the public still hasn't even heard of this game.
Maybe not great, but exponentially better than Psychonauts. Couple of hundred k first month maybe between both platforms maybe? I forget the actual Psychonauts sales numbers though...
It'll do okay. Unfortunately, okay is not enough these days, it seems. companies that do "okay" still get struck with massive layoffs and other troubles. The sad thing is that the game looks pretty awesome; at least good enough to garner some amount of popularity. I think it'll be a victim of its own choice of gameplay focus (referring, of course, to the heavy RTS elements mentioned by anyone who's played the later game).
I think it'll do well, not crazy but make a profit. It's had heavy promoting and looks more appealing that Psychonauts was to the general public.
After the push that the game is getting lately, I am hoping it sells. But realistically, this holiday season is pretty stacked with a LOT of sequels that will sell, like Assassins Creed 2, Uncharted 2, Modern Warfare 2, and so on. I want it to sell, but frankly I doubt it will. At best it will be a moderate success. At worse, a flop like Psychonauts.
It'll make the top 10 on NPD's but it won't be too high, probably just the 360 version. 7 or 8 maybe, 300,000 across platforms.
EA really is getting a pretty sweet deal on Brutal Legend. They picked it up after the great Activision purge of late 2008 and I'm guessing a large amount of development had taken place at that point. Since then they have pushed it to the moon in marketing (remember the giant Brutal Legend banner on the LACC at E3?) and even fought a rather high profile court battle with Activision over it. Heck, the fact that Activision would even take them to court over it just shows that even they are realizing this game might be worth a lot more than they though.
I don't expect it to challenge any of the established franchises which are coming out but I could easily see it being a sleeper success. Batman: Arkham Asylum just quietly sold 2.5 million copies. It can happen.
