I'll never look at you the same way again, 2Poch.
I'll never look at you the same way again, 2Poch.

After experiencing Chrono Trigger again during the Endurance Run, and despite being reminded about how strange and weird Chrono Cross was, I’d happily play another Chrono game. The way Chrono Trigger ends, you just know they went off on more adventures, and I’d like to see them. Where'd Brono's mom go?!

Chrono Bind is not that game. There’s not much “news” here, except to dispel speculation I’ve been seeing about a domain registration Square Enix has purchased, discovered by Siliconera.

Siliconera points out that Chrono Bind is a card game that’s being included in an set of downloadable content for Final Fantasy XIII-2.

The idea that Square Enix won’t ever make another Chrono game again is crazy, just like it’s crazy to think Final Fantasy VII won’t get a remake or direct sequel one day. Today just isn’t that day.

    Damn. I tried :P.

I do wish that they'd come out with something in the Chrono vein, but honestly, as long as Square keeps putting out good games, I don't really care.

Hm. If by "really good" you mean "really redundant, terrible, and completely lost everything that made the series good in the first place", I agree.

Man, back in the day, Square had it all figured out. They'd do a Chrono project or a Mana project or an original property like Vagrant Story between FF's. They even pulled in Quest and brought Tactics to the wider world as a Square product.

And then when they did make a new FF, it was an event.

Now they are just incapable of producing a good game, franchise or otherwise. Almost all of the FF remakes are joyless, only exception I can think of is FF4 DS. At least we still have Mistwalker, and somewhere deep in the Square basements, Enix.

@Nasar7: I have no love in my heart for anything Chrono Cross, but calling it strange AND weird is probably going too far. Either word would do on its own. Possibly accompanied by 'dismal'.

You would think that they would be aware of naming anything Chrono + _________ would lead to assumptions by the populace at large. If only Chrono Break would have ever seen the light of day people may have been satiated to the point of not being fervent about it anymore.

I am a firm believer that Square went steadily downhill upon merging with Enix. Not that the heads of both companies are awful by any stretch but they lost that competition and there was no longer any innovation or interesting new titles. Now it is all remakes and ports (though in fairness the move to more aggressively publish third party games is probably a smart one on their part after the bomb that was FF14). I left SE bandwagons a long time ago though to begin with. Moved on to Atlus and SMT back in the Persona 2 days... still want the next SMT game for consoles.

I'll let you in a on a secret FFXIII-2 is a crono trigger game pretty much in terms of mechanics and story driver, you can get away from monster that appear on the map you do thing in the past to solve quest in the future and vice versa though there is no hint of the dual tech system but then the game did need a little more than one side character to tie it to the FFXIII universe and I really liked that system (not as much as FFX-2 but hey I'm a bad person for liking that game according to many people)

No point in making another chrono trigger game unless they get the same incredibly (at that time) talented team together once more to make it happen. Otherwise it's just going to be something shitty like FFXIII.

So much hate for FFXIII, I've been playing that franchise and all of square's games since the beginning and honestly XIII is one of my favorites. The linearity thing people always bring up bothers me, X was pretty much exactly the same and people love that game. I definitely agree about the auto battle thing though, that was dumb, but they don't force you to use it so its not a deal breaker to me.

I don't think you even have to wait that long. Just give up trying to get the first comment on Quick Looks or news articles, and focus on trailers - specifically, trailers for downloadable games that nobody has heard of or cares about.

Do you guys remember, back in the day, a little while after Cross was released, Square filed a trademark for Chrono Break? That was such a happy day for me. And then nothing ever happened, and the trademark eventually lapsed.

Anyway, the era for more Chrono has come and gone. The Dream Team is no more.

I played FFx earlier this year and I'm on chapter 11 in FF13. Yeah, they both have many similarities, like a few too many unlikable characters, the sphere grid/christarium, different and interesting battle systems, very little exploration, very little equipment, and stories that make no sense.

I have to pretend Chrono Cross doesn't exist, just like I have to pretend George Lucas doesn't exist.

The 8 and 16-bit era of graphics and sound offered a nice filter on that harsh Japanese-iness that is making modern Japanese games so unappealing to the western market.

Wow, they're really keen on releasing terrible DLC for that game, aren't they?

I presume the DLC batch this will be released with is Sazh's side story, so no, they are in fact keen on releasing potentially great DLC.

    Dear Square Enix,

Please sell the Chrono IP to someone if you aren't going to do anything with it.

    Sincerely,

    Everyone.

    Dear Nintendo,

When you buy the Chrono IP from Square Enix, please give it to Monolith Soft, along with lots of monies to make awesome things.

    Sincerely,

So much hate for FFXIII, I've been playing that franchise and all of square's games since the beginning and honestly XIII is one of my favorites. The linearity thing people always bring up bothers me, X was pretty much exactly the same and people love that game. I definitely agree about the auto battle thing though, that was dumb, but they don't force you to use it so its not a deal breaker to me.

Well, the thing about the auto battle system was that it pretty much did force you to use it, because there was no way you could input commands manually fast enough without being at a serious disadvantage after a certain point in the game. What I felt like FFXIII did right was it had some really cool boss fights, but that tiny fraction of the game is unfortunately all I can personally say that I enjoyed about it. Everything else really bugged me, and that's definitely including the non-epic final boss and unsatisfying ending.

Also, I didn't really like FFX very much either, but for many more reasons then it just being linear. And before I'm accused of being biased from nostalgia, I actually liked FFXII A LOT. Which also had some problems, but that's due to SE hijacking creative control over Matsuno original vision which lead to his breakdown, and eventually to him leaving SE completely.
