An illegal drug, often seen in games depicting criminal acts. Often referenced without actual graphic descriptions of its use.
Cocaine as Cocaine Is
Cocaine has been a very central part of gaming with it becoming a very controversial subject when it comes to game politics. Ratings boards are often quite skittish about graphic depictions of drug use, and will often allow it to be referenced, but not explicitly shown. This is demonstrated most recently by the myriad of scenes in GTA IV where a character will be seen bending down and sniffing something out of shot- a clear case of a reference to cocaine without an actual visual depiction in order to appease the politics of the system.
Games: Cocaine Themselves?
Many people have proclaimed and argued that games can have addictive qualities similar to cocaine. In an interview with Father Raymond J. de Souza, he said this:
"Video games are like a black hole into which time disappears...They are the crack cocaine of the electronic world..."
The arguments have gone on even further when a bill was passed in Korea which would limit the time that Korean citizens could play video games after the many binge marathons and results in death.
