Revenge Is a Dish Best Served by Possessed Rats 0

Though it suffers from some of the common issues of first-person stealth games, Dishonored's rich world and engaging gameplay make it well worth your time.I've always found extremely frustrating the style of gameplay typically engendered by stealth elements. In games like Metal Gear Solid or Assassin's Creed, no matter how hard I try, I find there's a huge gap between the player I want to be and the player I actually am. The player I want to be is a cunning, graceful, and deadly phantom who stri...

Whether you are stabbing or sneaking, Dishonored is a joy to play 1

Very few games have ever made me immediately hit new game right after finishing them, or have even given me the desire to replay them at all. Dishonored however is one of those rare games where as soon as the credits finished rolling I wanted to jump back in and see more. Whether you choose to murder everyone in your path or sneak from roof top to roof top, Dishonored provides plenty of player creativity and satisfying moments to keep you entertained from start to finish. You play as Corvo Attano...

A fun, if disingenuous experience 0

Framed for the murder of the empress he was to protect, Corvo awaits his execution from the prison cells beneath a corrupt, industrial era empire. The setting is fictional, of course, but huge draw distances lined with puffing smoke stacks on a polluted, yellow watered lakefront work a kind of realistic wonder with Dishonored -- the Unreal Engine 3 always full of surprises, it seems. And you'll get to see plenty of it, as a resistance movement called the Loyalists have researched your personal h...

Dishonored Review: What Happened to the U 2

Dishonored is a new IP from developer Arkane Studios and Bethesda. Despite the lack of prestige that Arkane Studios possess, Dishonored had me very excited prior to its release. In a constant stream of conservative sequels towards the end of the current game cycle it really catches my eye to see a nice looking and risky new IP being released. To make things even better Dishonored looked like it had elements of Bioshock, Assassins Creed, Half Life and Hitman among others. I think most importantly...

No pun intended, this is a game that sneaks up on you 0

Bethesda as a developer can create some of the most beautiful and interesting worlds that just beg to have every corner of its map explored. While prone to technical hiccups and gameplay mechanics are not always perfect, they help support the exploration and sense of discovery those games provide. Bethesda as a publisher on the other hand is something else entirely. From the beautiful-but-gameplay-deficient Rage to the heavily disappointing Brink (the only game in recent memory I regret putting ...

The Knife of Dunwall DLC: Great Value for your Dollar 0

The Knife of Dunwall is a piece of DLC that many developers should aspire to make for their own games. Running parallel to the story of the main game you get to play as Daud, the legendary master assassin and true killer of the Empress. Knife of Dunwall presents the player with three lengthy missions: two of which are brand new environments while the third is an area revisited from Dishonored. As one of only eight people touched by the mysterious Outsider, you will also get to try a few new powe...

    Game of the year. 0

It’s hard to be objective when you have such strong emotions about the game you’re going to review. I’ll just say it up-front: this is my game of the year. Nothing comes, or will come, remotely close to it this year. Dishonored by Arkane Studios brought back the memories of classic PC games like Thief or Deus Ex, the constant need of exploring just one another room, reading just another little note, and then ending up playing for 10 hours straight. Games like these are a rarity in this day and a...

Grand Potential Hindered By Brevity 0

There are plenty of fantastic things to be said about Dishonored, most have already been documented on this site. For the most part I agree that this game is one of the finer new IPs to grace the market as of late, but it is not without its faults. The ideas before the game play mechanics in this game certainly give the player enough to fool around with and really make every play through a different experience. Whether you want to kill everyone in your path or play it like some sort of First-Pers...

    Stealthy, flexible experimentation 0

Whaling fiction, enjoyable stealth, special powers… it’s all here in Dishonored, a new IP developed by Arkane Studios. The game introduces some fresh new stealth mechanics and arms the player with the power of choice. Unlike most games that employ this power, Dishonored actually makes good on the potential and offers up a stunning variety of approaches to mission completion, combat, and traversal. It leaves plenty room for experimentation with its skill set and this results in some fascinating,...

This unordinary stealth game deserves attention. 0

I've never read Moby-Dick. My knowledge of Herman Melville's classical literary text begins and ends with that broad Futurama parody and the fact that Captain Picard likes it, or conveniently did by the time he was having a similar crisis as the book's central character Captain Ahab. Probably doesn't say a whole lot about me, but even with that base level of knowledge it was hard to avoid how prominently that novel is referenced throughout Arkane Studios' Dishonored. Not least of which in the ce...

Not Quite as "Groundbreaking" as promised 0

Before I continue, Dishonored isn't a bad game. Not by a long shot. More or less my disappointment with the game comes at it's length, which for your average $60 game today, should be at least 10 to 12 hours in length. At least, that's all I ask for. If it's a game like Halo or Call of Duty, I know that it'll have some fantastic multiplayer out of the box that will also give me countless hours of replayabliity. However, single-player games are always a gamble these days. The biggest aspect of Dis...

less than the sum of its parts 0

This review was written after my second stab at getting into Dishonored, a game that I didn't feel particularly absorbed by the first time around back in 2012 and, in fact, I put down after 2 hrs. On the advice of a friend I took another look at it recently. On balance that was good advice and I had a mostly positive experience. The most immediately impressive thing about this game is the beautiful art style and excellent world design. What also becomes clear rather rapidly is while the emphasis ...

I love me some stealth games. So many games have you killing people that I just get deep satisfaction and enjoyment out of sneaking around enemies. Okay, so the killing part I still mostly still like taking part in, but boy is it fun being a sneaky ninja! Dishonored is a first-person action role-playing game, with a new IP(finally) from Arkane Studios, published by Bethesda, and packs a load of silent-sneaky goodness. It all takes place in a big dolphin-punk (they use dolphin for fuel, it’s messe...

Play it - GOTY Contender 0

As someone who hated the unforgivable AI of Deus Ex. I must say that the balance between awarding stealth and penalizing the player for aggression is well kept in Dishonored. It allows players to explore the world easily with great mechanics, but falls short by lacking hard hitting story beats or set pieces that would have propelled it to GOTY status. Not taking that last sentence lightly, I predict this will be on many peoples list for GOTY, just not at the top. The combat is smooth and realist...

The prospect of new franchises in the somewhat cramped world of gaming is always exciting for core gamers. When fresh intellectual properties are shown at events like E3 or Penny Arcade Expo, we can’t help but be anxious to see what new niche the title will carve. The reveal of Dishonored was one of the most exciting announcements of the past E3 and for many reasons. The developers promised a blend of the stealth gameplay from series like Thief and Deus Ex with the atmosphere of something simila...

    Gorgeous and slick 0

I am a huge fan of all things steampunk, let alone games set in cities inspired by Edinburgh and London. Despite some contrary opinions around the web, Dishonored is the most gorgeous game I had the pleasure of playing to this day and that is saying something. The artwork, world design, immersion, characters are all so incredibly toned and vibrant, it makes you feel like being part of a visual novel. Topped off with slick, if a tad clunky, gameplay ( clunky as far as controls are concerned) Dish...

Stealth and Action in One Game? Count Me In! 0

Getting revenge is a tricky business. Do you serve it bloody and cold regardless of who gets in your way, or in the sneakiest undercover way possible? In Dishonored, the choice is yours. This original action-stealth game IP from Arkane Studios is something fantastic to behold. Sure, not everything can be perfect (it’s their first game), but the end product is definitely something not to pass up. From its great gameplay to the incredible art design, Dishonored makes a name for itself in more ways...

Takes insulting the gamer to new lows 1

The name of this game, “Dishonored”, might be a reference to the protagonist who is framed for murder. Perhaps, however, it is a description of lead designer Harvey Smith. Or, maybe, it describes the legion of sycophantic gaming journalists with no standards who have heaped endless praised upon this steaming turd. Regardless of how ironically named this game is, Dishonored is not a good game. It is, in fact, quite bad. It’s ugly, its story is poorly developed, and, worst of all, its stealth-acti...

The house name brand for Bethesda tends to create mediocre to decent games that isn’t the Elder Scroll series or Fallout and did not succeed much as well. Unfortunately Arkane Studios, makers of Dark Messiah of Might and Magic came out with a new IP that may borrow some aspects from their games but fall upon producing a stealth game that may result in the similar curse that Skyrim has come with its interactions and graphical detail. You play as Corvo Attano, a famous bodyguard of the Empress Kald...

Lately I had the urge to play a stealth game, I often have this urge but end up replaying stuff like Team Fortress 2 anyway. This time I was going to hunt down some game that had me slow-pace through it as a main objective, nothing meta prepared like getting any famous action game like Half-Life 2 and try to low-profile it. I wanted the real deal, something that resembled what I experienced back in the day when I had to safeguard my physical integrity while advancing in Goldeneye 007. believe i...

I went into this game knowing little and as soon as I started playing I got a Bioshock feel. The game is much less linear though. There are different ways to complete objectives and many different approaches. You can play the whole game by murdering everyone or play stealthy and try to not get caught through the entire game. There are also lots of powers and abilities. Levels are very expansive with many abandoned buildings and secret locations to explore. You can't experience the game through j...

Imagine if everyone from every succesful game studio on the planet came together and said "right, let's make a game." The concoction they would create would look a bit like Dishonored. It's pretty clear from the starting sequence that this game has been made by a rather talented bunch of people. How it, after the introductory sequence, simply thrusts a sword in your hand shows just how ambitious the creators of this game were. The story, albeit not brilliant and quite predictable, is interesting a...

Dishonored puts you into the shoes of Corvo, a respected guard of the Empress and her daughter, who later steps into the role of an assassin after a series of events occur in the beginning of the game. Without giving much away, Corvo is forced to hide his face from public by wearing a special mask which graces the cover of the game, and allows for you to hide your identity throughout the game. Stealth has never been so much fun. 0

When Dishonored was announced earlier this year, I had modest expectations for what it would become. Sure, the trailer was well done and quite impressive, but a great trailer hardly makes for a great game. To go along with humble expectations, Dishonored's developer, Arkane Studios, have only a short track record for making lesser known “cult hits”, so their ability to take on a big budget major release was questionable. It didn't help their cause that they revealed that Dishonored would be a hi...

Dishonored by Arkane Studios is one of the many games that tries to chase after what made Deus Ex special and ultimately misses the mark. Dishonored is an action game first and foremost with a frustratingly difficult non-lethal option. The game has an impressive setting but doesn’t do much with it because of a stereotypical revenge tale. The game commits its’ first mistake early in the tutorial by informing the player that killing too many people will result in the bad ending. When I try to make a concrete decision as to what my favorite game of all time is, the answer tends to change from day to day. More often than not, however, Bioshock is the first thing that comes to mind. My initial arrival in Rapture was a swift kick to the face, forever opening my eyes to how it feels to be in an atmospheric so thick I could taste it. Not since that precious moment so many years ago had I experienced a world so fully realized and enticing as presented in victorian Dunwall.Arka...

I tried starting this game a few times over the years but it finally clicked in 2021. It's complete package -- fun, great to look at, incredibly creative, unique -- but there's some thematic dissonance and a story that doesn't pay off. This is like a lite version of the Deus Ex/BioShock genre of "Immersive Sim" with some pretty cool traversal and combat and fantastic level design. There are a multitude of paths and player choice is the center of the game at all times. The "lite" commment comes ...

Let me start off by saying; as soon as I heard about this game I wanted to buy it. Thank God I didn't. This game requires a lot of strategy and is not easily one of those games you can just pick up, and play. This is not really a bad thing until you throw a little more dirt into the mix. The controls are spot on, and the powers are amazing if not a little creepy. I just had a hard time figuring out the storyline (besides being framed for the murder of the one you are to protect.) and how your ch...

Stealth games are a hard pill to swallow for some. The slow, methodical gamestyle of stalking guards and taking them out one by one in order to fill up a single broom closet with as many bodies as possible does not appeal to all. Dishonored is an interesting entry in the stealth genre as it plays like a stealth game but at the same time will not require an instant reload should you run into some action along the way. Offering a rich universe and plenty of open levels with branching pathways, thi...

This is a link to a video review I made recently for Dishonored. It's a fantastic game with a lot to offer and is a fresh take on the shooter genre. Combat is challenging but not to difficult and it has a nice flow to it that makes fighting or hiding all the more enjoyable. The story is solid but could use some vamping up, and the presence of a silent protagonist detracts from the games emotional heft. It combines a unique art style with interesting character models that make for a quirkily attr...

Stealth games should take cues from Dishonored 0

I Picked up my copy of Dishonored the day it came out, rushed home, and popped it in my xbox. My first impression? I hated how fuzzy the brush stroke artstyle looked when you viewed the environments closely. I know its a very nitpicky thing to say but that was the first impression I had when I started the game. Once I became accustomed to the artstyle and played through the intro I delved in to the meat of the game, killing dudes, or so I thought. I had never really played a game that handled st...

In the lead up to release I feel like Dishonored had a lot of hype.It was heralded as being in essence, a steampunk Deus Ex and I'd say it lives up to that. You're doing a lot of the same things you'd do in Deus Ex.There are security systems to hack.Such things aren't as prevalent here, but there are deadly light barriers and electrified turrets of sorts that can be either disabled or turned against your enemies with the use of a hacking tool. And there are vents to traverse, though most...

When stealth-action games are created, developers strive to find a fine balance between games being soul-crushingly hard and too simplistic. This balance is not easy to reach. Many games such as Hitman: Blood Money and Deus Ex have successfully reached this balance, but many more have failed miserably. With their game, Dishonored, Arkane Studios was able to avoid creating the next Velvet Assassin by striking a perfect balance between stealth and action.Dishonored is the story of Corvo Attano, th...

Back in Winter there was a Steam sale. And during this Steam Sale, the entire collection of the old Looking Glass Studios' classic "Thief" Series was on sale. Dishonored is a fantastic game with few drawbacks. The story is decent and the gameplay phenomenal. I think the game really stands out in how many ways it gives you to go about an objective. There are multiple ways to enter an area, multiple ways to kill or pacify your targets. The game gives a lot of choice in how you approach your gameplay style and that is something I respect very much. My main issue is you are penalized for killing enemies. I understand the draw, a true assassins should neve...

Dishonored is being touted by critics and fans alike as a nice, progressive step in the right direction for the stealth genre. I don't see it that way, though. Many reviews applaud the game for it's use of powers to make stealth easier and more fun. While the powers available to the player are certainly interesting and fun to use, they don't exactly push the genres in any new directions or do anything particularly remarkable to make stealth games more playable. Dishonored is a game that does a lot of things right that a lot of games do wrong. Most noticeably, it is simply a joy to control your character. He seamlessly moves through the environment at all times - whether it be under or over obstacles that would block movement in most games - but in particular, the 'blink' power is a fantastic idea that solves the problem of imprecise jumping in FPS games, and allows you to traverse long distances with ease and haste, both vertically and horizantally.The...
