I would like one,
I am Dyslexic, and just a little OCD, I must always check what I submit is spelled correctly and as I have vista, (Slow as Fuck) It takes awhile for word to boot up so I can check if I have made a mistake, It's usually obvious but, I just cant see it.

I know of other forums that have this feature,
Do you not have it because you don’t want people to be lazy, Or is it because it is too hard to code?

Cheers for any replies.

I'm hesitant, just because us Brits have to put up with being told we're spelling "Colour" and "Favourite" wrong. Grr.

Do we really need one? Every time I misspell a word on here I get a red line under it, and if I right click on it I get suggestions as to the words I might be trying to spell. I guess it's part of my browser (firefox), but don't most other browsers do that too?

I don't know what's more surprising, that IE doesn't have some kind of spell checker built in, or that some people still use it.

I think a spell checker that simply highlights the words that you mispelled would be better instead of forcing you to change it.

First off Cool fucking name,
Second, No don't force it, Just highlight and give examples of other ways to spell, If you catch my drift, Just something basic.

@Red12b: Thank you. I am both moved and delighted.

Anyway, if GB did have a spell checker I would at least like

  1. The ability to toggle it on or off for whatever reason.
  2. It highlights the words that you mispelled
  3. The computer "guesses" what words you're trying to spell and could give suggestions.
  4. English and American English support to satisfy everyone.

I use Firefox and I think there is one in it already.  I know when I misspell a word, it underlines the misspelled word in red.  If I click on the word, it gives me a choice of correct spellings.

A spellchecker isn't going to fix people using "adds" when they mean "ads."

Judging by some of the wikis I've seen, a spell checker would be incredible. I don't need one, because I'm great at spelling

Spell checking software would certainly be welcome, as it would improve the spelling of everyone and thus improve the readability. Wikis could use it too. I just don't know how demanding that software is for a website like this so it would be interesting to see if there could be a method of spell checking that Giant Bomb could use.

Seeing as this is an American site, it's probably meant to keep things standard.

I'd say so, its never a bad thing to have, but I use chrome and it has it built in, and I believe the same is true for firefox....

Plus, forums will be constantly plagued with bad grammar, but maybe it'll be the little bit that helps

Pretty much any decent web browser has a built in spell checker, or a spell checker add-on you can install.

I don't think anyone would have said this yet so I'll give you a piece of advice. Use Firefox. You're welcome.

I voted "No", FIrefox already has one. Its recommended to write wiki pages in Word anyways.

Does anyone remember a Bomb Should Have a Face episode when Snide was on, I believe he said they wouldn't be adding a spellchecker for theses reasons.

Same here. Also, I have never seen a server-side spellchecker. You would have to intercept keypresses in the active memory of the client, if you want to check anything before the client actually sends it. Every virus checker would go nuts if a website tried to hook into the keyboard driver (and rightly so). While I am typing in this reply box, I am basically typing into my RAM. The Giantbomb server doesn't "see" a single letter before pushing the "post reply" button.

Not really. Well Firefox does it all for me so I don't particularly need it. It underlines every misspelled word.

Not even a spellchecker could save the abomination that is the writings of governmentcheese.

I wonder if his browser has a spellchecker...because I really don't know how it could get that bad. He must be using IE, he must...

Spell checking is built into FireFox. I don't really see the need to duplicate the effort server-side.

The spellchecker wouldn't need to work like that. There are forums and webmail clients that have spellchecker integrated nicely as something that (optionally) scans the document just before being submitted or at the user's request. I'm not advocating one for GB, but there have been good implementations of spellchecking on sites (see Gmail).
