Fuck sake. Hey guys, you know those hours of silly fun you had in Dead Rising 1 and 2? Well too bad, now we get a "grown-up, dark, visceral" experience drenched in the glorious colours of brown, dark brown, and maybe a bit of grey. Cause that's what we've all been wanting! And like all the other games that have tried to go that path, I'm positive it will be highly successful both critically and sales wise...........

I actually like the change in style for the series however I thought that the change in style would represent a change in the game play to make it more about survival. Hearing that it is going in the opposite direction (items displayed on map and no time limit) has definitely changed my opinion. I can still get what I want from stuff like dayz but I thought this looked to be one of those games but with a massive budget and team working on it. Ah well.

By "Call of Duty crowd", do you mean "people who like fun"? Because seeing that demo was the first time a Dead Rising game has looked at all appealing to me. Even still, if the difficulty and AI is still messed up, it could be just as unplayable as the previous ones.

Broadening the audience. Better than then just making dead rising again.

People who want a game like call of duty will just buy call of fucking duty. Resident evil 6 tried the COD model and looked how that worked out.

A little bummed that it's getting away from the insanity but I haven't played DR3 yet so I have no clue if it's gonna be any good.

I don't think the time limit is intrinsic to the appeal of Dead Rising. I always found it got in the way of the game, personally. Nor do I think necessarily the loss of "insanity" like the servbot heads or silly costumes are all that bad. What worries me about DR3 is that it's losing the B-movie love that Capcom obviously has for zombies. All the way back to the first Resident Evil Capcom has displayed real affection for the b-movie aspects of horror films and zombie films in particular. If Dead Rising 3 loses sight of that (and it's arguable Dead Rising 2 was losing the thread), then I think the game will be poorer for it.

I'm not saying DR3 can't have serious moments as most zombie movies have a degree of severity under all the cheese, but the try hard charm of b-movies is integral to Dead Rising. If they lose that, it's just another zombie game without personality. We've got plenty of those already.

I remember the single hour of fun I had peddling a little tricycle whilst wearing a mankini. I believe that hour lasted up until I got bored and I went on to play the rest of the game and detest it's gameplay structure.

I love how "the Call of Duty crowd" has become a cartoonish mass of bro-ness to pin everything we don't like on, as if simplified and straight-faced action never existed or sold before 2007. What's wrong with just saying that the game is going for a more serious angle? Why drag an entirely unrelated game into it? Besides, if anything, I got more of a Gears vibe from what we saw.

I heard there is still a time limit in one of the difficulty selections.

Also, I could never get into either Dead Rising because of the clunkyness, and the time limit, both seem to be fixed.

My favorite killstreaks in Call of Duty are Buzzsaw Hammer Throw and The General Lee.

The demo they showed looked great. I just hope they get rid of the horseshit time limit on every mission. Don't make me go to the safe room every few minutes. It's a huge open world full of zombies and dumb ways to slaughter them. Let me spend some time doing that instead of making me go to the safe house every 10 minutes and snort Zombrex.

@metal_mills: So you rather have the " Walk to a small area[loading screen], deal with zombies in that area while escorting surivors with bad A.I., then finally make it to safe area[Another loading screen], skip their generic text just to head back out and see another loading screen" game?

I spend about 8 hours playing the first Dead Rising and like 2 hours playing the second. This one looks way better than those two.

You are wrong. The time limit is not only core to the game, it's the entire point. Dead Rising is all about having to make tough decisions and not being able to do everything you want or the game allows in a single run (the fact that it was possible to do everything in a single run was incredibly disappointing in Dead Rising 2). If you get rid of that, it's not Dead Rising anymore and might as well be a third-person Dead Island.

Ask Capcom - they're the ones who specifically called out going for that audience.

The first game was cool. Loved it to death... the second... not so much. The small game they put out that was 2 player was awesome. I will wait to see more... but I'm still looking to get this game. Maybe.

I'd rather have "Walk to a large area [no loading], deal with zombies in that area while escorting survivors with good A.I., then finally make it to safe area [no loading], interact with survivors with personality and backstories and head back out and see no loading screen."

You know, Dead Rising, but without all of the flaws? Not third-person Dead Island, which this came off as. Of course, it's still early, but that's the impression I get.

My bad, I thought those were McShea's words. That kind of changes everything, then. Doesn't mean the game will be bad, it still looks fun from what I could see through the brown haze, but that's kind of ridiculous. We already have PAH-LENTY of zombie games that aim for that market.

Beyond anything, though, the biggest concern I have for DR3 is the difficulty. The entire gameplay loop of Dead Rising relies on the game being nearly impossible on the first run, then easier and easier (while still being rather hard) as you level up, discover new paths and strategies, and restart. If they're going to go for mass market appeal, then the backbone of the game goes right out the window.

I was just out for lunch with a buddy and he said that was the feeling he got from the trailer, that they were going for a darker, more serious tone. I laughed it off saying "But it's Dead Rising? What's the point of a serious Dead Rising game?" and then I come back here and read this.

Hopefully this doesn't come to pass but I'd be lying if I said I'm not still foaming at the mouth with anticipation thinking of DR3.

...and on the bright-side I'm not convinced that even if they do try to make it serious that it won't some how turn out even more ridiculous than the previous entries.

It's clear that Capcom's focus is to draw in as many people as possible and hope the existing fan base can stomach those changes rather than build upon what worked before.

I believe this is the next of many games releasing with the same goal.

I kinda like this new direction, although I never really warmed to Dead Rising 1 or 2.

The only reason I didn't try Dead Rising 1 or 2 was the time limits. If going for the "call of duty crowd" is what they have to do to get rid of the timer then I will give it a chance.

@dixavd: Play Dead Rising 2: Off the Record. It's the best one. Has a glorious sandbox mode that you can do whatever you like in. Then transfer your save and stats over into the main game when you like. Gets rid of the grinding aspect of DR.

Not sure what you're bitching about because the game looks pretty cool and according the GB guys the silliness is still there. Also this is anecdotal and therefore not not proof of anything, but a lot of the people I know who only play a few shooters and sports games every year actually know what Dead Rising is and really loved the first game.

You can whine about it all you want, but going in a new direction isn't exactly the worst thing considering the quality of Dead Rising 2.

Did anyone else have a hell's own job of getting the multiplayer running well in dead rising 2 as well?

It's currently the best selling game out on the market right now, and everyone wants a piece of that pie. Saying "it's just gonna be another action game" is not as 'economically viable' as saying "we got a game that's similar to the game you enjoy and buy every year." Though as proven time and time again, going for that angle doesn't work. But hey, we're all stubborn, right?

And the makers of Dead Space 3 said they thought co-op wouldn't detract from the survival horror tone of the franchise, and people that loved the old games would have the same experience they wanted if they played single player. CUT TO: Shooting Unitologists in the head with a machine gun.

*shrug* Dead Rising and DR2 weren't exactly well made games. If they want to switch developers or go with a design that is easier to find and hire experts for then I can't say that is a bad idea.

You are correct... the time limit is (to me as well) an intrinsic part of the game and removing it isn't how I want to play... but making it optional (DR2:OTR had a lovely sandbox mode just for those kind of people) is just fine... I know a lot of people who didn't get past bringing back the first few survivors since crossing Leisure Park with the convicts active was quite the fire to be thrown into... you had to learn to let go and allow yourself to fail and let the ones you couldn't (or wouldn't) herd properly die so that you could stay alive and try to rescue someone else... this is not something that people are used to in games and so you get a bunch of them saying "Aw, screw it, this is too wonky and I can't figure out how to save these people so I'll just quit." (I also don't agree with many people who think DR combat sucks I actually prefer animation priority systems vs. cancel systems - but it would seem that I'm odd that way)...

You are also wrong... You could 100% DR, DR2 and DR2:OTR starting from level 1 without cheats (you could even hit level 50 in DR, I don't know that there is quite enough time to do that in DR2 or OTR even booking XP) so you should be disappointed in all the DR games for that. (okay, sure, you had to have played the game a lot so that you knew what you were doing and where to go and have a real good feel for the combat, but it could be done - I did it myownself.)

...or you could have read this writeup on Gamespot that is much more reassuring for the "traditionalist" DR player...

And the makers of Dead Space 3 said they thought co-op wouldn't detract from the survival horror tone of the franchise, and people that loved the old games would have the same experience they wanted if they played single player. CUT TO: Shooting Unitologists in the head with a machine gun.

Kinda hard for a feature like Co-op to detract from the survival horror-tone of the franchise when it was never there to begin with.

In not-lala-land jumpscares do not equal "horror" and "my inventory is full of healthpacks and ammo" is not exactly survival either.
    Even for Dead Space 1.

I still enjoyed all the Dead Space games though, fun little action games.

@zeforgotten: I enjoyed them all too, but you know what I was getting at. The emphasis (and the gameplay, in some respects) clearly changed, but they denied it when people responded negatively upon hearing about the 3rd game. I think the parallels are evident.

@wrighteous86: Sure. I guess it would have been better if developers would just come out and say "look, we changed it, get the fuck over it or go somewhere else" instead of just making up nonsense

Honestly, it might help people come to terms with it. I prefer the older Dead Space games, but I enjoyed 3 in a different way because I knew not to expect Dead Space 1, since I picked it up a few months after release.

Noooooo, you're telling me all the silly dumb stuff is gone?! That's like the best part of this series, we already have "serious" zombie games. Oh well, I still have DR2.

I just remembered this is just an Xbox One exclusive, fuck. :(
