To put my opinion about the star wars prequels and this situation bluntly:

"So, they are going to rape the dead horse now? Great".

(referring to the english expression of beating a dead horse".

Oh god. Maybe I do hate the prequels and just blocked it out.

The prequels are the ones with Revan, right?

I don't want to sound like an internet fanboy, but I think the prequels just weren't that great. I mean, I don't get all butt hurt about them or anything, but they just aren't for me. I can find parts to like about them, like the fight with Darth Maul at the end of ep1. The Obi-Wan part of ep2 was also enjoyable, and ep3 wasn't all bad, but they felt like kids movies to me. So did RotJ in parts, and I didn't enjoy that as much either.

I'm not going to write off these new Disney movies, but I'm not pumped to see them either. I don't think Disney is going to bring us the Star Wars we all want. Disney made a statement about "pent up demand" which shows they are going after profit. They know they can make anything and it will do ok, so be prepared for some second rate Jar-Jar thing designed to not alienate children so they can sell toys.

Let's see what makes the prequels kid friendly:

1. A lot of screen time given to stiff actors talking about supply embargos.

2. Scenes of the galactic senate using political jargan about shit that flies over children's heads.

3. The emperor committing genocide against the religious jedi.

4. Anakin murdering children, committing genocide, and being burnt alive.

The prequels had an inconsistent tone and Lucas used the term child friendly to try and defend his movies when in actuality they weren't for anyone.

I don't know what to think at this point. Recent EU has been meh, so much so that i've stopped following it. The Clone Wars cartoons are pretty good but have caused so many plot holes and retcons it's ridiculous (if you thought Force Unleashed was bad, imagine that x10). Then again they haven't been outright bad...... except for that episode where Dooku, Obi and Ani are captured by drunken pirates and continually fail to escape.....and the whole Mortis thing which was written by Lucas himself...

......well at least this means I can expect more Lego Star Wars sets for the rest of my life. At least those are consistently good.

I'm sure Disney will release the original three movies without all the CGI changes. That's the only thing to be hopeful about.

Well they did good with their Marvel acquisition...the Avengers franchise has been a huge success...and this is exactly what Star Wars fans have been asking for since Return of the Jedi's curtain drew...A proper series of sequels and a direct continuation of the Star Wars universe. Up until now, all we've had were books, which may I add have been criminally ignored.

Episode VII is a BIG deal. Disney...do not make another Pirates of the Caribbean 4!

I am pleased to hear that George will only be overseeing the project though...he won't be putting pen to paper at all thank GOD.

The force is strong with this one.

Don't most Star Wars fans already have their own personal list of what they consider canon and not? What harm would adding a few dozen more things to the "not" column really do?

But what does this mean for Day Of The Tentacle and Sam And Max Hit The Road? These are the important questions.

Very much agreed. It's practically the mathematical definition of how a movie should progress from start to finish as far as upping up the scales on a balanced curve. Maybe it was an accident, but it's still great watching even today.

I'm kinda becoming excited for what Episode 7 will be; I just hope that the people making it are as well. Nothing wrong with a glorious train-wreck either though.

I predict children will love it and the people that grew up with the original trilogy will hate it and the people that grew up with the prequels will hate it and I will enjoy revisiting the universe regardless of the quality of the story.

Wow, I totally forgot about all the horrible government stuff. Christ, that was poorly done. You're right: the tone of those movies was all over the place, though I don't think violence necessarily abrogates the possibility of a film being for children. There is plenty of mature stuff out there targeted at young adults. Moreover, regardless of content or intent, the movies were intensely popular with young kids. Kids still wanna be Qui-Gon on the playground today, and nearly every male in my elementary school saw the films at least once. I guess I'll rectify "I can find parts to like about them...but they felt like kids movies to me," to "I can find parts I like about them, but the worst parts felt like something out of a kids movie," if you really want to nitpick. IMHO, the attempt to appeal to a younger demographic hurt the films -especially RotJ and TPM-, more so than even the federation blockade trade senate blahblah, though now that I think about it, the Anakin and Padme stuff in ep2 was pretty shoddy too.

I am a fan of the first star wars trilogy and then a handful of games from lucasarts and i really dont think that this is a smart thing to do unless they keep it in the star wars world but move away from the storyline of the skywalkers. We really didnt need to see what happened before the original story since it was all explained rather well, the prequals didnt add to the original story is what im trying to say.

The Star Wars fanbase is so segmented along generational lines and between franchise off-shoots that it's likely that the majority are happy about this news. It's probably just the poor saps who grew up heavily invested in the OT who are having aneurysms at the thought of Disney LucasFilm beating that rotting corpse one more time.

It's true that they might further ruin the franchise, it's also just as true that they might make it even better. How are we to know? Disney has some incredibly talented studios, like Pixar. Star Wars is all about CG and Pixar would be a perfect fit for this.

To be honest, taking Star Wars away from Mr. Lucas is a fucking incredible idea. Disney is a great studio and George Lucas is pretty hopeless when it comes to Star Wars nowadays (and film in general) so personally I think it's excellent news.

I'm pretty excited about the acquisition. They've done the Marvel license justice in the film department, and their other studio Touchstone Pictures has done some pretty decent films in the past few years, most notably War Horse and the upcoming Lincoln. Lucasfilms is in good hands in my opinion.

@Scrawnto said:

Oh shit, I just realized that that means ILM and Pixar are in the same organization again. I wonder if there will be any interaction between those groups, sharing tech and such.

Whoa, never thought about that! That's quite a killer combo of special effects and animation they have on their hands now.

Yeah I'm totally an "OT" guy and I love this. Lucas was going to make more movies and they were going to continue to suck. At least now we have a chance of them being good, and with seeing how Disney has handled Marvel, I think there's actually a pretty good chance that the films are quality. They've proven they will give talented film makers a chance to work on big properties, not just the usual block buster type directors.

So does that mean they own LucasArts as well? I'm not sure how the subsidiaries lineup as far as this buyout goes. If Disney owns the rights to LucasArts i wonder if they'll just abandon games there or if they'll pull the stick out of LucasArts' ass and rerelease Grim Fandango and the Tie Fighter series.
