Get Rid of the Medals?
No. I want to stand out as a "traitor to the real Giant Bomb."
But really, I don't see the problem with the medals. It's the insecure people that are the problem, thinking that medals matter on the forum. I say keep em until people realize medals don't mean shit.
The bombcast is the bigger "community splitting" issue than medals. For me at least.
" @Vinchenzo said:Who made these categories? I would love to know." The medals really aren't doing anything, whether it be good or bad. Get over yourself. "get over myself? I'm trying to help protect individual privacy and keep a community from being split into two categories: haves and have-nots. "

" @yakov456 said:I'll give you more of an example, fuck off.You are a prime example of why the medals are a bad idea. As for the original question, the medals are one of the reasons why I will not subscribe. I do not want to look different from my fellow members. "" I'm am most certainly not with you. And a big F you to the turds who are pasting medals onto their av's. Jerkoffs. "

I like the medal. Plus, I really do not see why it would divide anyone. One group is supporting the site with ads, and the others supporting the site with subscription. In the end we are all supporting the site. Just a nice little trinket to show who donated or not. Which I think the vast majority of people who subscribed did so to begin with. The extra features are nice, but not what I believe most people signed up for.
So leave them. The bronze medal thing could work too if people really want them. In in the end it is insignificant.
" @LordXavierBritish: Yet my friend yet. There is millions of poor people the few thousand of rich people stand no chance. "You don't really have a firm grip on these Socialist allusion do you?
Idiots.. lol
@ZanzibarBreeze:
Hardly bothered describes it well.. There are some people actually upset by not having one, though.. not having a tiny, fake medal made of pixels under their avatar? Pretty hilarious.
What I miss is that halo and wings.. I hope those make a triumphant return.
" I feel that it's good, the subscribers get the recognition as someone who supports the sites with their money However, the moment a bunch of subs start discriminating against users who don't have a medal, then they should take it away "There's already a bunch of people who discriminate against those who do have medals.
" @Glak said:I know, but this is just the first couple of days so I hope that it'll die down" I feel that it's good, the subscribers get the recognition as someone who supports the sites with their money However, the moment a bunch of subs start discriminating against users who don't have a medal, then they should take it away "There's already a bunch of people who discriminate against those who do have medals. I just feel that subs should get some recognition, the medals are pretty damn cool
But yea, I know what you mean, although people like you give me hope
I can see multiple sides of the argument. Obviously nobody (well, not a lot of people) want some exclusionary thing that sends a rift through the community, but on the other hand SHINY!
I mean... *cough* On the other hand I can see it as a resonably potent marketing thing, like Achievements. I presume it's there to make the people who don't have them get itchy spines and suddenly feel the need to keep up with the Joneseses. So as an incentive in an appealing-to-gamers-and-collectors way, I can see why Whiskey would implement them.

There are people who will use anything at their disposal, be it post count, join date or in this case, a medal to present themselves as superior. Those people will make the whole medal thing uncomfortable until people get used to it. Though to be honest, the people here shouldn't penalize the many for the actions of a few. Nor should the people without medals villainize those who do.
" Why would any human being deny Jessica Rabbit of a medal.. granted it's a silver one. Don't worry baby, once papa gets more money, I'm getting you a gold one! "This is what I find enjoyable. Hardly any time spent on the forums and yet you have a medal. You might find this weird, but now I take you more seriously.
Jessica Rabbit is hot.
As far as i'm concerned, its not a big deal but...
Dave said in his blog post about the subscriptions he didn't want to segregate the audience, and it kind of is segregation. Although its not a "paid forum" like he was discussing in the post, it does add fuel to the fire, the chat room during the BLLS was a perfect example, people spamming the chat saying "ALL YOU CHEAP FUCKERS THAT HAVEN'T SUBSCRIBED...."
no sir, i dont like it. But, its WM's decision.
Dirty non-subscribers, it's people like them that are tainting the pure subscription-based community. I also blame the non-subscribers for crime.
@Dalai: It is in the best interest of Whiskey Media to allow members who subscribed to be identified. If you haven't noticed, a lot of people around here have medals. This quantifies the support Whiskey Media has for their range of sites. It encourages people who have not yet subscribed, by making it seem worthwhile (other people are doing it, it must have some merit) and out of simple peer pressure ("I feel all alone").
" @Tsai said:haha yea :P Hey it's bringing onboard more people at least to join in on the discussion with you veteran GB cats :P" Why would any human being deny Jessica Rabbit of a medal.. granted it's a silver one. "It's just a medal. What is really dividing the community is all of these dividing the community threads. "
YES!!
Why are people getting so worked up about this? The only way its going to devide the GB community is if we let it. You want a bronze medal ok thats not a bad idea. Its not like I signed up for an avatar medal icon.
" More proof that people will complain about anything. "It might seem that way, but I truly believe that this whole medal thing will do nothing but cause discrimination and segregation of this amazing online community called Giant Bomb.
" @Symphony said:And who's going to discriminate? Will you? I certainly won't. Only a complete moron whose opinion isn't worth anything to begin with would discriminate based on such a thing." More proof that people will complain about anything. "It might seem that way, but I truly believe that this whole medal thing will do nothing but cause discrimination and segregation of this amazing online community called Giant Bomb. "
I do think that it'd be neat if people could opt out of displaying their medal just as an aesthetic thing, however. It looks kinda strange with some user icons.
" @ZanzibarBreeze: Hardly bothered describes it well.. There are some people actually upset by not having one, though.. not having a tiny, fake medal made of pixels under their avatar? Pretty hilarious. What I miss is that halo and wings.. I hope those make a triumphant return. "Hells yes!
The people who have added medals to their avatars (without having a membership) bother me for one reason: the medals are all low res and pixellated. It literally scrapes ditches in my retinas. At least do a good job of it if you're going to do it at all. I mean, the original medals are .pngs.
"Recognizing people and thanking them for contributing to keep the lights on has nothing to do with "democracy". I'm a subscriber and I don't care about the medals one way or the other - so why do you? I wouldn't mind if they made it something a little less garish, though. I know they crafted them with care because they wanted to show their appreciation -- but I think it'd be better to just have a little colored dot by your name or in the corner of your pic or something.Dividing a community by class, even with something as insignificant as a garish medal, is undemocratic and wrong. Who's with me?
