so, like a dumbass, he bought a PS2 and i told him that the PS2 is yesterday and that they dont release games for it anymore (he's interested in new and upcoming games).. so he said that he's thinking about buying a PS3.
what do u think? is it too late for a PS3 and he should wait for a PS4 or are games for PS3 gonna be released for atleast 4 more years?
Also, though ive never had a console and barely know shit about em, i always felt like the X360 had the cooler games and cooler stuff to offer. so him and i are gonna do some research and see which console has the majority of new games released for it. based on that we're gonna decide
So, if we decide on Xbox, should he get a 360 or is there a new one coming out soon?
What ya think ? he doesnt wanna buy a ps3/x360 and then regret it when a newer version comes out in 2010 or something
EDIT : im not FORCING myself onto the whole thing, he asked for my help ..
My friend wants to buy a console
no way it's not too late to buy either console. sony is pretty in to the whole 10 year life cycle and ps2 is apparently still truckin. but i'd suggest to upgrade and get a ps3 cause of all the new exclusives. I have a ps3 and love it but... i will admit that i'm planning on buying an xbox 360 cause of Splinter Cell. i love those games.
bottom line don't expect a new console anytime soon.
there's talk of maybe a new xbox but it's just a rumor.
but i suggest PS3, with God of War3 and Uncharted2!!! awesome awesome awesome.
" there are still new games being released for it. "like what? nothing of the new big titles im sure
" The PS2 is a great console. It has a huge library of fantastic games that are available very cheaply. It was a great choice. "thats the thing, hes interested in new and upcoming games. i mean yeah yeah he order GTA SA and Just Cause and another couple of games but that aint his interest.. he wants Assassin's Creed 2, Just Cause 2, Splinter Cell Conviction, etc ..
Though 3rd party exclusives are going extinct, I might suggest that FPSs with online mutiplayer or co-op have an edge on the 360 because to this point, MS has had the better live experience. The only games I want to play but can't are Heavenly Sword, MGS4, and Uncharted. All the same, I'm hoping to get a PS3 whenever they hit the magic $199.
" @Ahmad_Metallic said:no you idiot he's asking for my help and he likes to discuss games with me.. i dont even start the conversation HE starts asking about games and consoles and asks what to do. i wouldnt intrude.. i know more than him on this and that. thats all.."him and i are gonna do some research and see which console has the majority of new games released for it. based on that we're gonna decide"We? Dude, it's his money. Let him decide. "
Your friend should take the time to figure out which exclusives he's more interested in playing more and then decide on a console for himself.
Both machines are going to be around for a long ass time still so hell buy one now and buy the other later, that's what I did. I bought a 360 first because it was cheaper and came with 3 free games and a second controller, I did eventually buy a ps3 though and ended up playing that more until I upgraded my pc and now I play that more lol.
First off there are still some games coming out for the PS2 because let's face it the PS3 still hasn't caught the full attention of some of the publishers out there. As for what your friend should get, if he wants a blu-ray player that also plays games get the PS3. If he wants the 360 I'd say wait a year. If he is dying to get the PS4, I'd say you've got a while to wait, and when it comes out make sure that Sony doesn't shoot themselves in the foot again and leave your friend crying because he tried to buy the release version of the console.

He should get a 360, it is cheap, the games are the one that cost less and it is almost the same experience (except for blu-ray) for like half of the ps3 price.
"The PS2 is a great console. It has a huge library of fantastic games that are available very cheaply. It was a great choice."
Yeah if anyone thinks he's a dumbass for buying a PS2, they need their heads checked.
If he really wanted new games that much, he'd have done a bit more market research before buying.
We're in a recession, and theres no telling how quickly we'll come out of it or how quickly a new console generation will turn up, but both MS and Sony have said they have no plans for a new console at the moment, so it's going to be at least 3+ years, so sure, go ahead buy a PS3 or a 360. I say or a 360 because if he wants a PS3, great, but I cannot wholeheartedly reccomend one at the moment.
The PS4 won't hit probably til about 2015 at the earliest, if Sony sticks to their word. The PS2 while not for current stuff has a FANTASTIC library for RPGs and Action Games. If he is interested in Splinter Cell Conviction then he will most likely want a 360; as it will be an exclusive (will it be limited only, who knows). Either consoles will give you a good gaming experience, if longevity is what you are looking for the PS3 to me is the better choice as the 360 won't be lasting til 2015; I expect something new from MS by 2012.
Yeah, I got a 360 back when I had money and the main reason that I got it (as opposed to a PS3) was that all of my friends had them. This is good for a number of reasons. The first is that you can play online with them and the second is that you can borrow their games. If you have no friends to play with, it doesn't really matter, but it's certainly something to think about.
If that isn't of any concern to you, I would recommend what everyone else has said and suggest that you see what exclusives appeal to you. As a 360 owner, I don't give two craps about Halo or Gears of War but all of the awesome stuff on Xbox Live Arcade is more than enough reason to get a 360. PSN has tons of great downloadable stuff as well.
I guess what I'm saying is that it doesn't matter which console he gets because there are going to be games on the other console that he'll want to play at some point so he's screwed either way. They're both great systems... as is the PS2.
The number of good exclusives on the 360 outweigh the PS3 almost as much as the price of the PS3 outweighs the cost of a 360.
If you're on a budget and want a next gen system, there's zero question. I picked up an extra 360 premium for $160 from slickdeals a while back. You won't ever see a PS3 that cheap until the PS4 is out, if only because blu-ray penetration hasn't justified the price drop yet (The drives by themselves still fetch $100-200 at retail, and those are 5.25" drives, not the slim version in the PS3).
Additionally, the 360 is backwards compatible at this point, the PS3 is not. Any given game is probably more expensive on the PS3 simply because it has far fewer titles to compete with. Compare used prices on PS3 games against used 360 games on gamefly or walk into any gamestop.
If you have the money and a high def TV, get a PS3 too, but if you dont, and especially if you dont have a high def set to take advantage of blu-ray, it's really not a question.
" @pornstorestiffi: You know what's really funny? A friend of mine just got a 360 and it red ringed after she had it for about three days. Bummer. I've had mine for about two years and haven't had any problems... yet.Yeah, I got a 360 back when I had money and the main reason that I got it (as opposed to a PS3) was that all of my friends had them. This is good for a number of reasons. The first is that you can play online with them and the second is that you can borrow their games. They're both great systems... as is the PS2. "Here is an excellent point that deserves reiteration. It's really important to consider what console everyone else in his circle of friends has when picking out a system. Both the 360 & PS3 have an equal number of excellent games running on them now with the majority of 3rd party titles available for each. The PS3 has Blu-ray, but the 360 has streaming Netflix as well as all that other crap announced at E3. But those are minor differences in my opinion, since they have little to do with gaming. On the other hand, if your friend plans to play a lot of online multiplayer, he might want to consider a 360, provided he is willing to pay the yearly Gold Membership fee. Also, I don't know what system you [Ahmad_Metallic] and your friends have, but if he is going to play online with you then it'd be a good idea to all be on the same service. Finally, as Castro pointed out, sharing is good for everyone. I routinely trade games with my brother who games. It cuts down on the expense and allows for more gaming by everyone involved. He has a 360 since that was what was popular at the time he recieved his console, but his other friends have PS3's, so now he is looking to pick one up if the price ever drops. Having a PS3 would mean he could trade with others besides me (although he could continue doing that since I have one, as well).
And the PS2 is always a smart purchase. I've spent more hours playing PS2 games (lots of JRPGs) this year than either PS3 or 360 titles, and there are many excellent games for the system that deserve to be played. Even if you aren't into JRPGs, there's 2 God of Wars, Ico, Shadow of the Colossus, Sly Cooper, Jak & Daxter, Beyond Good & Evil and the Ratchet & Clanks. That's just off the top of my head. Sure they aren't new titles, but damn it, "new" doesn't always mean "worthwhile." Plus, it's important to have a sense of history with games to be able to greater appriciate them.
Don't knock the PS2! It's got the best bang for your buck out of any system on the market today, as well as the biggest and best library. No where else are you going to get Final Fantasy X, Kingdom Hearts, Primal, GranTurismo 4, God of War, Xenosaga, Jak and Daxter, etc. and for $20 a game or less. For what it will cost you to buy one "current gen" game like Call of Duty 4, or Infamous, your friend will be able to get 5 or more games if he plays his cards right and still have enough money left over for a pizza and a six pack. The PS2 is the Atari 2600 of this gaming era. There won't be a comparable system for at least another decade. Oh, and as others have said, there are still games being released for it. At E3 Sony said they had over 100 new PS2 games scheduled for release for the next year. Good gameplay shines through regardless of all else. So don't knock something because it's "last gen."
Also, it's his (your friend's) money that is being spent here and not yours. If he wants to buy a PS2 then say "cool good for you, welcome to the gamer club" and move on.
As far as the "current gen" goes I say buy a PS3, or go home at this point, because Microsoft and Nintendo's portfolios are pretty well spent. Micorosft hasn't shown that they have anything truely new and original to offer. They just have more of the same recycled crap we have been seeing from them (Halo, Gears, Fable). Meanwhile, Nintendo has done a fantastic job of proving that the Wii is nothing more than a non-gamer oriented Minigame filled crap fest. Sony still has fresh original stuff up their sleeve in the exclusivity department (White Knight Chronicles, God of War 3, Heavy Rain) and as far as games in general go, a rule of thumb I have learned over the years is that if a game is truely worth playing it will be released multiplatorm in which case it doesn't really matter what system you have, because you get to play it anyway. Ok I'm done ranting.
Even though the PS2 is old, if he hasnt played many games for that generation your friend shouldn't worry about buying a current gen system already. Enjoy PS2's enormous library. Choosing between 360 or PS3 though, i would have to give it to the PS3 by a narrow margin because online play is free and they don't fail as often as 360. However if you want a broader online experience and are ok with paying for it 360 is the way to go. You might also want to look at the small amount of exclusives and see if that might seal the deal on a certain console.
Does the guy intend to play online? Is he willing to pay subscription to do so?
Single player or multi player focused gaming?
In an earlier thread I asked people how much they have spent on either console IN TOTAL. You can check out the replies - http://www.giantbomb.com/forums/general-discussion/30/how-much-have-you-spent-on-your-console/248511/
Seemed like in the end most people spend a similar amount between PS3 and Xbox360
Unless you are hell bent on a particular franchise then game titles don't factor in all that much because you get great stuff on both consoles.
" @MB said:In the sony press conference there were like 100 new games coming out for PS2 this year or something like that...Correct me if I'm wrong." there are still new games being released for it. "like what? nothing of the new big titles im sure "
it is still good to have xbox 360 or ps3. i'm planning on getting a ps3 soon. there is still more life in the consoles. it is said that a new console is coming out in 2010-2012, look at it this way, if he waits for the price to drop he will find out about the problems the next consoles will have.
i always wait for the price of the console to drop. it helps find out what the problems of the system, the games that will be coming out. i did this with the xbox 360. i waited until the price dropped and microsoft increased the rrod to 3 years.
the ps2 still has some games that come out for it. i dont' play my ps2 anymore but the last popular game that i have noticed was call of duty: world at war. the game has things that the 360, ps3, and PC don't have. i think they are extra missions. look at it this way also he gets a discount on the good games that have been out for a while. i think metal gear solid 4 is now $30. if he does buy ps2 games they are only like $5-$20 which is good.
" He should get a 360, it is cheap, the games are the one that cost less and it is almost the same experience (except for blu-ray) for like half of the ps3 price. "The console itself is cheaper sure. But whenever I look at buying a game I find the starting prices are exactly the same. 360 game probably drop in price quicker though, but I am not sure about that.
Well, if your friend seems interested in a ps3, and his only worry is it becoming outdated quickly, tell him to go for it! The claimed "ten year" life cycle seems pretty legit at this point.
Why exactly do they need to be new?Theres plently of old ps2 games to play.Just because the games are new dont mean they're good.
I would go with a 360 if he only has a PS2...the library for the 360 is massive so there's not much risk involved other than the hardware itself.
"The PS4 won't hit probably til about 2015 at the earliest, if Sony sticks to their word. The PS2 while not for current stuff has a FANTASTIC library for RPGs and Action Games. Lol, you really believe Sony won't release a new console before 2015?
Anyway the 360 is the way to go, if you want to play the new Splinter Cell that's the only way you're going to be able to do it.
ok well there are a few things your friend has to ask him self
>freinds choices
yeah this is probibly one of the first things he should think about
unless he is a hermit
>exclusivity
just like it says is there any games in particular he is looking out
for but to but like some one said earlyer in the thread a new games isnt always a better
one and if its good enough it will come out on all patforms
> online play
ok both consoles have it but the 360
from what i seen has a closer comunity
i might be completely wrong about that but thats what
i seen and if that what he want is he willing to pay for it
>game prices
from what iv seen the prices on reliese are usial the same but th 360 may
drop a little quicker but dont hold me to that
>why does he want this gen
probibly should have put this near the top of my list
the ps2 has a large selection of games that will keep him going for a good wile and they are dirt cheap or
he just say to hell with it all and do the right thing and get a dream cast
because we all know the dream cast kicks ass
yeah well those are just a few questions he should ask him self before buying a new console
since its his cash
What to think about.
1) 360 has red ring. *Have sent mine in twice*
2) PS3 has Yellow Lights Of Death. *Very Unlikely*
3) PS3=$400-500.
4) 360=$200-400.
5) 360 exclusives include- Gears 1, 2. Halo 3 Franchise. Left 4 Dead 1, 2. Splinter Cell: Conviction. Crackdown 1, 2. GTA 4 DLC.
6) PS3 exclusives include- Gran Turismo 5. God Of War 3. Infamous. Killzone 2. Little Big Planet. MAG. Resistance 1, 2. Ratchet and Clank Series. Uncharted 1, 2. MGS 4.
7) PS3 has free online capabilities.
8) 360 Live Costs $50 a year.
9) 360 Live has Xbox Live Marketplace including Demos, Xbox Originals, and Arcade Games.
10) PS3 has its own marketplace and Home.
11) 360 has HD.
12) PS3 has Blu-Ray.
As a xbox owner i'm going to buy a ps3 once the price drops a little further. Just because i own a ps2 and want to continue playing god of war. And those great RPG-s goming out for ps3.
Edit: I'm also quite sure there won't be nothing completely new from sony for many many years to come.
Judging by the PS2's life cycle, you should have no worries about games coming for the PS3 in the next four, maybe even six years. Your friend should be pretty good with a 360, too, and aside from an upcoming camera-based motion-control add-on called Natal, there's no new Xbox hardware expected soon. Without getting into any fanboyism, I personally recommend getting a 360 for its broad-spectrum library and rich online features. If your friend is a big movie buff, they might enjoy the PS3 for Blu Ray, but don;t forget that a new PS3 probably won't play their old PS2 games. Either way, you're choosing between two great systems.
I think your friend shouldn't rush in. He bought a PS2 and that was an EXCELLENT choice. There are so many quality games for it. I think the PS2 is the best beginner's console rignt now. Tell him to wait, and if he is still playing his PS2 in another 6 months, THEN buy a newer console.
