Series that have totally repaired their reputations with sequels.
What series that started off with bad or average games have managed to totally fix that rep with a sequel?
I'll start the ball rolling with Killzone. Killzone 1 wasnt overly bad but had some serious issues i think we all agree.
However 2 has gone on to win the hearts of the gamers and critics worldwide and sell millions.
" Sonic 4! "I see what you did there.
I'd say that Zone of the Enders: The 2nd Runner really changed a lot of perceptions about that series. The first one is mostly regarded for being the game that came packaged with the MGS2 demo. ZOE2 is, by contrast, a much more polished game with absolutely incredible gameplay in addition to an interesting story. It's also the main reason why people keep pleading with Kojima to make a ZOE3.
I totally agree, if someone wanted get matches up and going again i would so be up for it.
Erm I will go with Devil May Cry, after the second which came out (which is the one i try forget) i thought the franchise was ruined, But the third proved to be just what the doctor ordered and saved the game for me.
Not that I've played it, but I think Uncharted 2 would be the first that comes to a lot of peoples minds.
i think you mean batman begins, not to discredit the dark knight. also seriously? predator 2?
" @MarkWahlberg: i think you mean batman begins, not to discredit the dark knight. also seriously? predator 2? "Batman Begins was an excellent movie, but it wasn't anywhere near as popular as the Dark Knight. Although I guess that's not the same as 'repairing the image'. And the predator movies are my guilty pleasures, ok? Don't judge me. (actually.... yeah, that's another case where the 'repair image' doesn't exactly apply, since the first one is good. So nevemind.)
I think that Prince of Persia: The Two Thrones was kinda a return to form following what I consider to be a horrible mistake with POP: Warrior Within.
Jak 2 comes to mind as well, also, simply because it completely changed the perceptions of what the series was and would become.
Lufia is the only one I can think of. The first game was perhaps the most average thing in existence; the second one made my top 20 games ever. That's quite an improvement. I'd say that Mystic Ark improved upon a lot of the crap in The 7th Saga, but they're technically different series, so I can't use that example.
Well, you can't tell if this is right or not, but Spec Ops: The Line is looking like its shaping up to be a good game.
What about the reverse? Games whose sequels ruin the series. I only mention this because I cannot think of any in the OPs category. But in this category I mention, I think of Rygar on PS2 ruining the feeling of its original, Rygar on the NES. Or Joe & Mac 2: Lost in the Tropics, which ruined everything Joe & Mac: Caveman Ninja built up.
Oh wait, after typing all of that, I just thought of one that fits into the OPs idea: Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles II: The Arcade Game definitely makes up for the shoddy game that the first game was.
Although I liked the 4th in the series a great deal more than most folks seemed to, I thought Suikoden 5 was a vast improvement in every conceivable way.
" Sonic 4! "That would imply Sonic 1-3 were bad.
None of the other games count anymore :P
Except perhaps the Adventure ones, which were at least decent.
Well, the first one. Mostly.
Killzone 2, Assassin's Creed 2, and Super Mario Galaxy are the biggest ones this generation. The original Killzone was an average FPS that was plagued by technical bugs. Assassin's Creed was repetitive and lacked any real structure. Super Mario Sunshine was actually a good game. It just fails in comparison to the lineage of other console Mario titles.
