Taking a look over the holiday season releases, being between now and March next year (yeah, it is a long season), I thought I would take a detailed look to see which console would be attracting the most interest for me.  True, I have a Wii and 360 only, I decided that taking a look at the PS3 would be a worthwhile exercise to see if it would be worth the while spending $500 on one based on the games that are exclusive.

I have broken the games into 3 groups, being those which I am certain to get, those which interest me enough to see how they come out or get cheaper later and those which I just don't care about.  For the sake of keeping things simple, all games that just look cheap and generic have been ignored.  Here we go:

No Caption Provided

 Must have games:
  1. Harvest Moon: Animal Parade
  2. New Super Mario Bros. Wii
  3. Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: The Crystal Bearers
  4. No More Heroes 2: Desperate Struggle
  5. Arc Rise Fantasia
  6. Fragile: Farewell Ruins of the Moon

Let's see how these turn out & those I will buy cheap later:
  1. A Boy & His Blob  ........................ looks sweet.
  2. Band Hero (also 360 & PS3) ........................ do we have enough band games already?
  3. Chaotic (also 360 & PS3) ....................... no idea, but I like strategy.
  4. LEGO Indiana Jones 2: The Adventure Continues (also 360 & PS3) ............................ I didn't really play the first all that much.
  5. LEGO Rockband ............................. as long as it is compatible with Guitar Hero instruments, then yes, at a price.
  6. Rabbids Go Home ............................. no Rayman means a better game for me.
  7. Resident Evil: Darkside Chronicles ..........................  I loved the first and I have a lot of fun with on-rails shooters.
  8. Silent Hill: Shattered Memories ............................ never played one and this may be a good place to start.
  9. LEGO Harry Potter Years 1-4 ............................. could this be a good Harry Potter game for a change?
  10. Sakura Wars, So Long My Love ........................ I am intrigued and I love anime.
  11. Sky Crawlers: Innocent Aces ............................ this looks very good as an Ace Combat style game.
  12. Tatsunoko Vs. Capcom: Ultimate All-Stars ............................ not a big fighting game player, but this could be one I like.
  13. Red Steel 2 .................................. this will probably go in the must have list if the wii motion+ stuff works out and it looks brilliant.
  14. Sin & Punishment 2 .............................. another one with much potential.
  15. Trauma Team .............................. I enjoyed the first 2, so I am hopeful that this does something a bit different.
  16. Sonic & Sega All Stars Racing (also 360 & PS3) ............................ I want this to be Mario Kart good, but I am not optimistic.
  17. Lord of teh Rings: Aragon's Quest .............................. as long as it isn't too kiddy, this could be good.

Not interested:
  1. Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare ................................  war games don't interest me.
  2. Drawn to Life: Next Chapter .............................  looks too simple.
  3. Jurassic: Lost Island (also 360 & PS3) .......................... I am sure it will be crap.
  4. Naruto Shippuden: Clash of Ninja Revolution 3 ..............................  have the first, don't need any more.
  5. Need For Speed: Nitro ................................   car racing on the Wii?  No thanks.
  6. Shaun White Snowboarding: World Stage ..............................  I want 1080  or a new SSX.
  7. Tony Hawk Ride (also 360 & PS3) .......................... I am over Tony Hawk games.
  8. Guitar Hero: Van Halen .........................  oh lord no, horrible music.
  9. Super Monkey Ball Step & Roll .............................. I am over the monkey stuff, give me a new Billy Hatcher instead.
Conclusion:
6 must have games is pretty good for a single console and some of those in the second list show great potential.  Certainly enough to stop any dust collecting on the Wii.

Must have games:
  1.  Resonance of Fate .......................................... an RPG by Tri-Ace< yes, I am there and my faith in them puts it on my must have list.

Let's see how these turn out & those I will buy cheap later:
Assassin's Creed II .......................... didn't really play much of the first, so more likely a cheap buy much later.
  • Dragon Age: Origins ........................... it is an RPG, so I am interested to see how it plays.
  • Grand Theft Auto Episodes from Liberty City ................................ barely played IV, so it will wait for a very cheap price.
  • Left for Dead 2 ................................. it's banned anyway, but it seems like a cheap game later for me, if it ever gets a release.
  • Splatter House ................................ I know nothing, but the name sounds gruesome enough.
  • Bayonetta ............................ looks and sounds pretty good, so I will keep an eye on this.
  • Dark Void ........................... sci-fi, so maybe it will be good.
  • Divinity II: Ego Draconis .......................... this sounds pretty good and it is an RPG, so one to keep a close eye on.
  • Majesty 2: The Fantasy Kingdom Sim .......................... a strategy game that could be okay, but it kind of looks cheap.
  • Mass Effect 2 .................................. didn't like the first as much as I wanted to, but who knows.
  • Aliens Vs Predator ............................... I want an Aliens game that I enjoy, so here's hoping.
  • Bioshock 2 .............................. I kind of liked the first, but I have problems with FPS, so it is likely to be a cheap game later.
  • Lost Planet 2 .................................. I want this to be good, but am not overly optimistic.      R.U.S.E. ................................... it's an RTS, so I am very interested.  Singularity ................................... maybe this could interest me.
  • Two Worlds 2 .................................. stupid name, but as an RPG, I am hoping it is better than the first.
  • Dead Rising 2 .............................. didn't play the first, but I will keep an open mind.
  • Front Mission Evolved ....................................... I am hopeful that this will be a load of fun.
  • Supreme Commander 2 .................................... more RTS, so I am interested, even though on a home console.
  • Nier ................................ it is a Square-Enix game, so I am looking forward to it.
  • Alpha Protocol ................................. looks potentially appealing to me.

  •  Not interested:
    1. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 .......................... just not interest in war games.
    Rogue Warrior .............................. looks boring.
  • The Saboteur ................................ looks boring.
  • Army of Two: The 40th Day ......................... looks really boring.
  • Darksiders ............................. looks uninteresting.
  • Heist ........................... looks very boring.
  • Champions Online ............................. if it needs online, then I am out.
  • Dante's Inferno ............................... just does nothing for me.
  • Dead to Rights: Retribution ............................... looks boring.
  • Just Cause 2 .............................. not for me.
  • Mafia II ................................ didn't care about the first.
  • Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell: Conviction ............................. NOT interested.
  • Battlefield: Bad Company 2 ................................. yawn, another war game.
  • Red Dead Redemption ............................. western cowboy game, no thanks.
  • Highlander ................................. not interested in the franchise.
  •
    Conclusion:
Only one must have leaves the 360 RRoD unlikely, but there is ome potential in the 20 games I will consider or buy later.  Too many war, shooter or action games for my taste.

    No Caption Provided

     On the 360 anyway:
    Assassin's Creed II
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2
    Dragon Age: Origins
    Splatter House
    Bayonetta
    Dark Void
Star Ocean: The Last Hope International ........................ unless it is really different to the 360 game.
    Aliens Vs. Predator
    Bioshock 2
    Lost Planet 2
    R.U.S.E.
    Singularity
    Two Worlds 2
    Dead Rising 2
    Front Mission Evolved
    Nier
    Resonance of Faith
    Alpha Protocol

    Must have games:
    1. White Knight Chronicles .................................. an RPG that looks stunning.

Let's see how these turn out & those I will buy cheap later:
    1. Heavy Rain .............................. looks good, but not really my thing, but certainly worth a look.
    2. Gran Turismo 5 .................................... I am not paying full price for a racing game, but eventually, I am sure I will have a lot of fun with this.
    3. Last Rebellion ..................................... it is an RPG from Japan, and I know nothing else, but still interested.

    Not interested:
    1. Buzz Quiz World ............................... not interested in the franchise.
    2. God of War Collection .............................. have the first and never played it, plus the PSP game didn't do anything for me, so no.
    3. SingStar Latino ...................................... oh lord NO.
    4. MAG ................................ online action with 256 players?  Not for me i the slightest.

    Conclusion:
Not enough to push me over the line into buying one yet, but it is getting there, one game at a time  ^_^

    In closing:
Most of my gaming fun into the first quarter of next year is still coming fro the Wii and most of my 360 gaming is still in the clearance or price reduced section.

Feel free to critique my observations, but remember this is based on personal tastes and clearly, I am not a shooting kind of gamer.  Also, feel free to let me know what interests you as I am sure we can have a decent conversation about it.

I'd say xbox but its pretty even across the board. And its very hard to find a game that doesn't involve war in some way, so it must be hard to not like playing them.

And when is COD4 coming on wii? I have it for PC, but i wouldn't mind renting the wii version just to see how they did it.

I would have said the 360, but with the Playstation 3's price cut and a little game called Uncharted 2, Sony seems pretty hot this holiday season.

I misread the topic title at first.  I thought you were asking which game console has the best game overs of the holiday season.  Just a little different.

You're formatting is all screwed up, making it really hard to read the post.

    I would say 360. Also:

I can't help but think we knew your gaming would be done on the wii.

However  I can picture most of mine being done on the PS3.

It was more a rhetorical question I asked and answered myself, sorry for the ambiguity.

FPS - no, RTS - yes.   Two different types of games.  Sci-Fi RTS is best, and I play it a lot on PC.

It keeps changing the format.  I swear, it's not me and I keep trying to fix it, do so and then it formats it again - very annoying.

Everything this holiday season I've purchased has been for the PS3 and PC.  Don't have anything against the other systems, but I haven't seen better reasons to buy multiplatform games for the 360 to this point.  Now, I know I'll likely purchase Bayonetta, Splinter Cell: Conviction and Mass Effect 2 on the 360, but for all other titles, I'll probably swing toward the PS3 in most cases.  I don't have a Wii, but there are DS games I am on the look out for like DQ9 but they haven't been given NA dates yet. Of course, I am also looking for localized release dates for several other JRPGs like Tales of Vesperia (PS3) and Persona 3 Portable (PSP).  But the truth of the matter is there isn't too much left in 2009 that I am solidly sold on.  For the stuff coming out early 2010, I need more information to swing me either way.

FPS - no, RTS - yes.   Two different types of games.  Sci-Fi RTS is best, and I play it a lot on PC.

But isn't Supreme Commander technically a war game? You shoot and blow things up, right?

Wow, we have distinctly different taste in games. I respect that, but I'll just say that you should probably give Mafia II a shot. I have more hope for that game than I've had for any in a long time.

Xbox 360, because it's the only console I can actually play games on. (I don't own any other systems.)

My taste in games is both different and similar to the OP's. I love RTS games, Harvest Moon games and JRPG's, but I'm also much more of a fan of racers, shooters, fighters and Western RPG's.

In terms of best games for me, well I may be a little biased on the matter, because the only next gen console I own is 360, but there are some killer games coming to 360 in the next few months. I'm so super pumped for Mass Effect 2, Left 4 Dead 2 could be worth a buy, Assassin's Creed II looks rad, BioShock 2 is high on my must-get list, as is Dragon Age, and I'm very interested in Splinter Cell, Dark Void and Bad Company 2.

I think Sony was hot out the gate first with Uncharted 2, and their early 2010 line-up is crazy, with GT5, GOW3 and MAG all dropping within the span of a few months, and there's some good stuff in between. It's a good time to be a PS3 owner, that's for sure.

As for Wii, well, very little of what Nintendo does these days interests me in any way, but there is still some chocolate amongst the excrement. Not meaning to sound too harsh, but as an ex-Nintendo fanboy, I find it very hard to be positive about the Wii right now.

I don't doubt for a second that those bold 360 games will be very good and Dragon Age is probably the one that will interest me most.  I think the PS3 is still looking a little lean on exclusives, but if I had a PS3, I would likely choose that platform over the 360 for the games on the 360.  If you looked at the exclusives for the 360, that also looks a little lean, so it doesn't really matter if you own the 360 or PS3.

I am navel gazing at what is to come for November to March which is why I am not concerning myself with Unchartered 2.  There are far more appealing game for me on the PS3 than U2 from the back catalogue.

Taking a look over the holiday season releases, being between now and March next year (yeah, it is a long season), I thought I would take a detailed look to see which console would be attracting the most interest for me.

That is my working time frame, it doesn't really matter what any other notion of time is.  These are the games I am aware of having a release date in between the months mentioned.

Because they were not on the "pre-order" list on the site I visit, they are already released and this is set in the realm of future, not present or past, both short, medium or long.  Oh, Eye Pet has a western release date?  Yes, I know you can get an English language version, but when is an actual western release slated?

That is as good an explanation as I am giving  ^-^
Plus, U2 doesn't really appeal to me, so it would be on my wait for a cheap price list and I have never been interested in a Ratchet game, so at best it would be a "buy later and cheaper" game.

Haha, fair enough. I see what you did tharrrr.

Eye Pet is out here in England, so I assume it's out in Aus too. I definitely think you'd like that, it's pretty neat. I think you'd like the Pixeljunk games and stuff too. Surprised at Ratchet, thought you'd like that going on the other things you listed. I'm kinda getting the sense you don't like games with a shooting mechanic full stop.

No, I had no idea what the lists would look like when I started.  That is just how they came out.

To be fair, I would probably enjoy Ratchet, but platforming isn't my absolute favourite, although a lot of good games are in that genre.  I always just stopped short when thinking about a Ratchet game on the PS2.

I am sure I would enjoy Eye Pet as well and I expect my kids would love it.  Not sure if it is out yet, but you are probably right as I am working from an importing site, with NTSC releases, which of course is why the PS3 is better than the 360 - no region coding, easy importing.

As for shooting, it is FPS that bothers me most.  I love House of Dead: Overkill and unlike FPS, it doesn't make me ill.  An FPS has to be special to keep me playing as an hour of Halo gives me 2 days of nausea.  Plus, I do actually find most of them horrid to look at and quite boring.  Give me an RPG any day, then give me an RTS or even better, a TBS, but make them cartoony for the pleasure of my eyes (like Battalion Wars or Fire Emblem).

The only games I'm interested in are Dragon Age: Origins (PC) and Mass Effect (360). Army of two two (I refuse to call it anything else) also looks interesting, the first one was great.
I might get a PS3 though so I'll have to buy Uncharted 1 and 2, Killzone 2 and Infamous.

I haven't been paying a whole lot of attention to Dragon Age: Origins, but bothering to read up a little on it has certainly raised my interest, but I think a 360 version is where I would have to go as I doubt my iMac would run a PC version properly and I am about 2 years off for a new Mac.

Although there isn't a lot that interests me, from an exclusive point of view, there is a bit in the back catalogue that would interest me in a PS3:
LittleBigPlanet, Demon Souls, Valkyria Chronicles & Disgaea 3 - just not enough to justify the $500 for me yet.  When I do cross that line I know most of the games I get would cross from the 360 to the PS3 just on importing alone.

PS3 for sure because It has Uncharted 2...

All the other big name games I am excited about are multi-platform so it doesn't matter... That being said Uncharted 2 is the only one I will be getting on the PS3... The rest I will get for PC/360.

I'd really move Heavy Rain over from interesting to must-have. Of all the games planned for the PS3, this one intrigues me the most, and it has nothing to do with the graphical prowess of the game.
For wii, i know you like your Harvest Moon, but it's been a long time since any game in the series was a must have. You should replace it with a Boy and his Blob, Sky Crawlers, or Silent Hill

Also, good eye on White Knight Chronicles. From what I played at PAX it was a little clunky, but still a lot of fun

I don't think his list is necessairily for games out before christmas (Heavy Rain won't be out yet either)
It might also be out before then in his home country. Those crazy Australians don't understand the natural order of things (namely, Americans get translations first)

No More Heroes 2 is supposed to be out by March '10, in the US, not sure about PAL, but it doesn't matter to me as I have an NTSC Wii for importing anyway.  It fits into the time frame I used.

Of all the games planned for the PS3, this one intrigues me the most, and it has nothing to do with the graphical prowess of the game. For wii, i know you like your Harvest Moon, but it's been a long time since any game in the series was a must have. You should replace it with a Boy and his Blob, Sky Crawlers, or Silent Hill  Also, good eye on White Knight Chronicles. From what I played at PAX it was a little clunky, but still a lot of fun "
I have to keep Heavy Rain as a 'watch' game because it isn't what I normally play, but it does look intriguing.

Harvest Moon is always a must have for me because I always enjoy and play the hell out of them, nothing has changed.  Sky Crawlers and Silent Hill are not what I normally play as well, but they certainly are worth a look in, especially Silent Hill.  A Boy & His Blob is guaranteed to be one of those games that makes you feel warm inside and looks sensational from an art perspective, and is more likely than not to end up in my collection.

That's exactly why you should buy some other games instead. The games haven't changed, so wouldn't you be better off continuing to play the older games and trying some of those newer experiences? That's how I see it at least.

It would be true if there wasn't enough different about each game to make the new ones worth the effort.  It isn't like they are an EA sports franchise that, for me, is where I get one during a console life and that's it for 5 years or so.  Even the car racing games like PGR, Forza, Gran Turismo, Burnout or Need For Speed have enough in them to get me to buy each and every release (ell most anyway, NFS can be hit and miss and that Underground street stuff was bad).

It all comes down to the individual's engagement with the franchise I guess and the force is still strong in this one  ^-^

Lol, after reading this, I thought it was written in 2007-2008. I mean how do you still think a PS3 is $500?

And all these "reasons" come off as too brief and/or ignorant. But it seems like you were going for quantity or worthwhile read.

Don't assume prices are in US dollars, they are not, in US dollars it does cost $450 (that is $450 US) to buy a PS3 here.  If you read a little more you would be able to have established that.  So no, I am not buying it just yet.  Still, it is better than the $1000 dollars it cost back on release, which was at least $900 US.

As for the comments, well, it was going to be a long blog and already risked a plethora of TL/DR.  Do you or anyone really care what I think of every game released on 3 consoles over the next 5 months?  Though not.  I gave a brief reaction to a game based on my tastes, but by all means, if there is any game you wish me to elaborate on, just ask.  I am happy to share a dialogue with you.

Lists like these remind me of how many games I miss each year.

I have a Wii, and I haven't played it since Mario Kart. I'm not a big Wii fan, but your Wii list does look promising, I'll give you that. I may have to dust it off and try something on it. I myself am starting to find the FPS genre to be stale. I use to love them since Halo 1, but there has really been no innovation in the genre recently, besides maybe Borderlands, but I don't like that game.

I mean, 90% of the blockbuster titles now are FPS games. I'm really really sick of it. TBH, I absolutely HATE this era of gaming. They threw out RPG's and adventure games for generic, easy to produce FPS games. I'm really hoping in the next decade that a new genre emerges as king, even though it probably won't happen soon, if ever.

I think you bring up a very valid point for many of us, and that is the dominance of FPS at this point in time.  Many seem to believe that unless that is what you play, you are not a worthy gamer.  To be honest though, there is still a good number of other games to play, but they seem to get a lot less attention and to much notice is paid to all the shovelware.  I still liken this fascination with FPS to be like the blockbuster action movies of the 80s.  It seemed to be all you could see if you went to the movies.  However, over time, Bruce, Arnold and Sylvester just seemed to get old hat and a flood of Jean Claudes and Dolphs just ensured it became stale and boring.

What happened to the action film of the 80s will happen to the FPS of now.  Market apathy will kick in and no amount of hype will get it to the lofty heights of the past and a new type will move in and take its place.  No guarantee it will be better though.  But just like the FPS lovers should just ignore the games they don't like, I can just enjoy much of what isn't FPS.

I think the 360 definitely has the edge here, and by a good margin. Also, the games you're not interested in really baffle me.

I am a baffling kind of gamer.  I did put a large number of 360 games in my "interested" pile so it isn't like I am ragging on it or anything, but by all means, which ones baffle you the most?
