No I did not take a poll, but I myself am gay. So you yourself need to stop making assumptions. By saying that all I know of gay men is what I see on TV and is movies that is an assumption. I think you have missed the point of what I was trying to say. I am saying that a person doesn't need to be flamboyant to be openly gay. What I was saying that a large majority of gay men aren't flamboyant and thus I could understand the use of a character who wasn't flamboyant but openly gay.@pyromaster222 said:

All you know of gay men is what you see on TV and in movies most likely. How do you know some random dude who doesn't "act gay" isn't openly gay? Guess what, you don't.
Stop making assumptions.
Would you play a game with an openly homosexual protagonist?

flamboyancy and that dumb lisp so many like to fake gives off the perception that many see. Both are just weird and turn offs but some see that as a reflection of gay men which can be really fucking annoying at times.
As a general rule I would have to say that I wouldn't really care as long as gameplay and story are there, but in all honesty I might shy away from a game that had overt homosexual tones. For example, I didn't have a huge problem playing Boyonetta, I knew it was extremely over the top and very sexualized, but I could still play it and enjoy it. If Bayonetta was a man though and did all of the same things that she did, I would be less likely to play the game. I wouldn't hate on it I just wouldn't even give it a chance. Now I wouldn't have a problem if Master Chief or the dudes from Gears were turned into homosexuals, because their sexuality has never really defined them as characters, and I have played gay dragon age and mass effect characters and haven't had any problems playing them.
Coincidentally, Persona 2: Innocent Sin is almost out over here in the west on the PSP.
Also quoting this for truth:

I can't believe this is a question that has to be asked.
As if any sane person would have some sort of moral dilemma over playing a game where the character's sexuality may differ from their own. Such people would no doubt also find it hard to play characters who are a different gender, species, or race, I imagine. And those kinda people are crazy.
Sure. I'd actually rather see them explore the concept of sexuality and identity a bit, to be honest. These are themes rarely explored in video games.
Mass Effect 3 has.If the game has sex scenes, hells no.
That said I don't think a game will ship where you're forced to play a homosexual character that later engages in male on male 'sex' scenes. America still seems to throw hissy fits over boobs and heterosexual 'sex' scenes.
I think Fox News might implode if a game with a homosexual lead character engaged in some off-screen dong loving.
God hates fags.
Would people view Grand Theft Auto differently if Niko was black? (and yes, I know, GTA: SA, but that was a much less 'serious' game.) Would Indiana Jones have the same following if played by a woman? Would you play a game that depicted you murdering an innocent (and not on that crappy way MW2 did it), Would a song about promoting rape culture be more acceptable if done by a female? Would a game like 'Diablo' be as popular if it were titled 'Satan', would it's sale even be allowed?
It's the question of: "if we shake up the norm, is it still the same?" You'll probably see more social issue stuff like this come up from me in the future. Plus, its great discussion material!
@Cramsy: Because my porn filter is set to straight, nothing wrong with being gay, but I'm not. You can throw in homosexual scenes in the game, but don't force me to watch it.I'm sure if one of them was really cute and slightly girly looking, and you weren't told he was a guy. I don't think you would have minded. Not that character models can be that good with that sort of thing.
Also, this whole thing reminds me a Marty Feldman sketch, well it was a general British comedy sketch. Funny he never married. Ha ha, Captain Price... funny he never married.
If the game was good and the fact he/she was gay tied into the story in a good way then yes I would play it, On the other hand I would prefer it was a "normal gay" person if you will and not one of the over the top in your face homosexual as they get on my nerves, I do not know why as I honestly have nothing against homosexuals but that very camp attitude grinds on me a bit as surely those people did not act like that when they were growing up so I assume when they realised they were gay they started talking/acting like that, Maybe not but my example of this was a friend i went to school with from first school to high school(5-15) was a normal guy who spoke with a normal accent and had typical male expressions but then i bumped into him a couple of years later at a party and he was way over the top with his campiness as if he wanted to make sure everyone knew he was gay, I am an each to his own type of person but when that intrudes on other people in an obnoxious way then it annoys me a little.
So to sum up if the main character a very camp homosexual that would probably get on my nerves a little while playing it.
I'd prefer it to NOT be one of his notable character traits simply because I find subtle detail and characterization to be far more enjoyable.
Though, on that note, I'd love to see a sort of Bulletstorm game with a super flamboyant character to completely spin the "uber tough space marine guy" trope on it's side.

Yes. But I don't care about the concept and wouldn't be interested in seeing it be executed either.
I wouldn't play as a flamboyantly gay person who talks ridiculously high, loves designer jeans and can't stop singing, no. Those things annoy me, and make me unable to sympathize with the protagonist. I don't like Duke Nukem for the same reason--he's a tool. But if they were gay in the Neil Patrick Harris way of unobtrusiveness, then yeah, I guess. I mean, if it was a good game besides that.
Anyone that says Gears of War is retarded, even if they're slightly sarcastic. We already know the characters and how they're not gay, it wasn't funny the first time. You could just say that about any buddy soldier or buddy cop story out there. You know, 'cause we all know Riggs and Murtaugh from Lethal Weapon are gay, or every soldier that fights together in war is gay right? Ugh. I may sound like I take it too seriously, but really, it was never funny.
@csoup said: Just for reference, however, I wouldn't play a game with a straight guy/girl that wasn't well crafted or they were over-the-top male or feminine.
What about like all fighting games.
I don't know maybe. It depends on what type of game it is and how it's handled. It would pull me out of the experience to some degree though because I wouldn't identify with "my character" as much. Sometimes I have the same issue with woman mains in RPGs, depending on how the game is structured
sometimes games push the player more strongly towards RPing the main but then layer on all of this other overt character stuff that makes it hard to identify with. You see people rage on this all the time. "MY character would NEVER have done that thing in the cut scene!!! This game sucks!!" I could see some of the same issues with a homosexual main for most people.
Anyway, in any game type that matters and that would also feature sexual themes, orientation pretty much has to be a player choice.
I wouldn't want to play a RPG or any story driven game with a gay protagonist, for the same reason I don't play those games with a female protagonist. I like to immerse myself in the game and story, so I always play as a version of myself - not being gay nor a woman, having relationships with men would just be weird and would break the immersion.
As for other genres - the sexuality of the protagonist doesn't really matter. I guess it would come down to how "in your face" it would be. If there had been male strippers in Duke and you could've tipped them - I would have been fine with that. But if DNF started with Duke giving head to two guys - I think I would have found that even more distasteful than the current scene.
How would we know he's gay if the never shows it and never does anything that shows he is a homosexual. I didn't even know Dumbledor was gay untill someone told me. I think sexual orientation doesn't matter; it's irrelevant in that case. But no I would not be opposed to an openly gay character.
