Hey people, this is a bit of a nostalgic post. Do you remember when PC games came in huge boxes? And if so what was the last game you bought that had one?
Do you remember when PC games came in big boxes?
Yea I kinda miss them in some ways. Tho it started to get pretty funny during the transition -- such as my last purchased big box Splinter Cell: PT...inside the big box was just a double disc jewel case...so looked pretty funny being encased in the large box heh.
Do I? I have about a hundred big ol' boxes standing proud in my bookshelf. The last game I bought when they actually came in big boxes I believe was Quake III Arena, but I bought Diablo in big box about a month ago from a weird second hand electronics store.
I remember buying (I think) Morrowind in one of the smaller (but still pre-DVD case) boxes and thinking that game packaging was going downhill.
Well the battlechests still all come in big boxes. Outside of that, yeah I do remember.
In fact I have the boxes still for the Half Life Collection, Counter-Strike, Duke Nukem 3D: Atomic Edition and Tribes 2 down in my crawlspace, sitting there collecting dust in their phat glory.
I don't remember the last game I bought in a big box, but I do remember them and yeah they were big.
" How about PC gaming with nothing more that a floppy disk? Those were not the days. I'm looking forward to more digital distribution, but we, the consumer, need a voice. I should be able to resale the code I have purchased. When someone like Steam does that, I will be satisfied. "A floppy disk? More like.. 5 floppy disks.

It's a shame I came into PC gaming when I did, I remember only getting one gargantuan battle chest thing for The Sims, I had plenty of old cardboard boxes and the funny thing was living in California I always heard about how much of a waste it was to make those, cut down trees and what have you. Now we have a total reversal where it's more earth friendly to make cardboard sleeves instead of polluting plastics, I say for the sake of the environment they bring back the cardboard battle chests!
Yes, and it was StarCraft: Brood War. A lot of games still come in big boxes compared to those for console games though.
I think the last time I bought a PC game before they started coming in 4x6 inch boxes was either Battlefield 1942 or Lock On: Modern Air Combat. I remember that games were still burned onto 700mb CDs that came in jewel-case boxes (the physical retail Half-Life 2 box had 5CDs) up until I got Chaos Theory in '05 when I finally had to get a DVD drive for my PC. You do still see the full-sized Starcraft Battle Chests if for whatever reason you find yourself in the software section in Costco.
Ah... brings back great memories of Homeworld, Total Annihilation, (old) Rainbow Six, and all the Jane's Combat Simulator line of games (I loved how badass the packaging was when instruction and flight manuals came in 200 page binders).

" The last big box that I can remember, was The Witcher CE. "
Oh yeah, forgot about that. I don't think they created it for nostalgia, I think it was simply about being able to fit the artbook in:
I'm glad they don't exist as they once did, space is expensive these days.
Yes, I do.
Recently, I reassembled all my boxes just because I could. I'll come back with some pictures.
The Warcraft III Battle Chest was the last big box item I bought ( just got around to picking it up October 13th ). If that doesn't count, I think it would have been the Half-Life 2 Collector's Edition.
They needed big boxes because they had gigantic manuals inside. Also maps, posters, coins and other types of shwag were boxed in with the standard game. Ah, the good ol' days. You're lucky to get a post card with the keyboard controls printed on them these days.
" They still do, Wrath of the Lich King was in a box. "But not in a big box. We are talking about boxes the size of one's own torsos.
I have never bought a PC game for myself as it was provided to me by friends and family. Although my Mom threw out a lot of my games because they were too violent. I was about 11 or 12 something like that. Plus she hated the fact that I installed them without her permission.
