Overrated much? Meh, my personal pick was Up in the Air. What do you guys think?
Avatar just won best picture at the Golden Globes.
Best Picture. Yes, Avatar was the best picture. I've never seen a better picture from a movie in my life.
" i did not watch many movies in 2009, but was avatar that good? "I'm not a big movie goer either bro, go see avatar and don't listen to the hating nerds that bitch about a rock being a different color. Its an amazing movie.
" i did not watch many movies in 2009, but was avatar that good? "Not really. The effects were AMAZING, but the plot was a bit disappointing.
Up in the Air and Hurt Locker were lightyears ahead of Avatar, in terms of cinematic quality.
Very unhappy with the choice of Avatar. The politics of Hollywood, though, win out, I suppose.
I can understand that.
If it wouldn't be Hurt Locker, I'd choose Avatar too (but then again, I haven't seen Up In The Air yet).
Up in the Air was the best movie I've seen in a long, long time. Jason Reitman's best film yet, and he was very robbed.
" in all honesty, Hurt Locker deserves best picture wherever it goes "@Mariek430: @Bruce: I saw the beginning of the show, saw that Up in the Air got some attention . . . never heard of it before tonight. Is it that good? From the clips, it seemed a bit too 'artsy' for my tastes . . .
I think The Road should have won or been nominated. I have never felt like that after a movie... ever.
Fuck Avatar. The fact is that the story is balls (but we won't get into that discussion on it's originality), the characters are shallow, and the visual effects are amazing. I can't believe this movie won best picture. I just don't know what to think...
I was surprised that won. Not that it's bad, but it just didn't seem like a movie that'd win. Then again, I should have saw it in 3D. Maybe then I would have set higher expectations. It's weird but whenever I think of movie award shows I think of Titanic. I don't know why. I knew Up In The Air was going to do good. I never heard about it until a months ago. I want to see it, kinda reminds me of Michael Clayton. Well, kinda. It looks like it has a relaxed plot. Down to earth tone.
It was a very good film. You can hate about the story all you want, but the fact of the matter is that it earned a 94% (top critics) on rotten tomatoes, and a golden globe award for best picture.
If you don't like it fine, but you have to realize that "hey, critics know what good cinema is more than I do".
Avatar is horrible. I was pumped about it was excited to see it. The story line is boring as fuck. I was High when i saw this movie and was still bored and it was in 3D!!!!
BOW DOWN BEFORE JAMES CAMERON!
ALL OF YOU

HE IS A GOD AMONG MEN....

....
...........not really.
" @AjayRaz said:Really because I thought the effects were okay and the story, while conventional, was better." i did not watch many movies in 2009, but was avatar that good? "Not really. The effects were AMAZING, but the plot was a bit disappointing. "
No doubt it will obviously win best picture as it literally changed the standards of what CGI quality is now supposed to be. Even if its story isn't great since they literally awarded its visuals I guess. Not its character development and story.:D
" Overrated much? Meh, my personal pick was Up in the Air. What do you guys think? "up in the air is overrated.
that movie was good, but nothing compared to avatar.
Avatar had it all man, it is the best movie overall.
" @AjayRaz said:thats incredibly narrow-minded of you." i did not watch many movies in 2009, but was avatar that good? "Haven't seen it, but from what I heard, these are my thoughts on the film.
"
It's an Awards ceremony. You have to expect a combination of hype and internal Hollywood politics to triumph over conventional wisdom or cinematic merit. This is the way it has been for many years.
I still refuse to see Avatar, so I can't speak for it personally, but "The Dark Knight" level of hype it has generated among my peers is off-putting to say the least.
" It was a very good film. You can hate about the story all you want, but the fact of the matter is that it earned a 94% (top critics) on rotten tomatoes, and a golden globe award for best picture. If you're going to take a Rotten Tomatoes (or critically acclaimed) standard, then please explain to me why The Dark Knight got zero nominations a couple years back? With the exception of Heath Ledger's posthumous awards (whether you agreed with it or not), Hollywood failed to give the movie its due because it was a comic book character. I have yet to see Avatar and will withhold judgment of it until then but The Dark Knight was a critically acclaimed movie and financially successful one too. Seems more like Hollywood love for Cameron, which whatever, I do enjoy several of his movies. As long as this doesn't take best picture/director/screenplay for the Oscars, I think I'll be okay.
I think Avatar is a fantastic film and all, definitely, but I was a bit shocked to hear that it won Best Picture at the Golden Globes. I always thought of those awards as an "audition" for the Oscars- you do well at the Golden Globes & you have a shot taking home the big title.
Avatar is great. Best film of the year? Better than Up in the Air? Better than The Hurt Locker? No. Avatar is a fantastic visual experience with excellent acting & amazing action, but it didn't move me the way other films did this year, including the aforementioned ones.
Avatar is a great action movie that tries too hard to be Star Wars with its budget and ego, but completely loses sight on the characters, lines, originality and universe that made Star Wars great.
It winning in the Golden Globes is disgusting, and the simple fact that I am now going to have to live with a generation thinking that Avatar is the best movie ever is something that I don't think I can really stand.
I didn't see many movies in 2009, but UP, District 9 and Fantastic Mr. Fox were all vastly superior movies to Avatar.
