Google is going to start testing 1 Gbps internet service with fiber. According to them this will be at "competitive" prices as well. For those that don't know, those with relatively fast internet at the moment are somewhere around 10Mbps, the experimental service promises to be 100 times faster at possibly the same price. Mind-blowing? So was the storage offered by Gmail at first (1GB compared to 10MB offered by Hotmail at the time). There's a short intro video below:
Google to offer 1Gbps Internet 0_o?
Yeah but there's also DSL technology just around the corner (for almost 3 years so far heh) which negates a lot of the noise cross talk and speeds up DSL to 1GBps too. I wonder if Google have thought about that.
Sounds cool, but seeing as how my area just graduated from dial up to a 1mb connection a few years ago, i wont hold my breath for getting this in my life time.
" Sounds cool, but seeing as how my area just graduated from dial up to a 1mb connection a few years ago, i wont hold my breath for getting this in my life time. "Haha yep, exactly my thoughts.
After all of the questionable antics which Google has been up to as of late... their cataloging of books and such; I am not going to lie but I am somewhat weary.
you foolishly leave the greatest country in the world to head to a country for faster internet but worse healthcare system and higher crime rate and much more crooked politicians have fun.
""Selected locations in the United States" This is relevant to my interests! Well, not that I am to complain with my 16Mbps internet. "I have that too, but if I can download huge games off of Steam in less than a minute I will literally shit my pants.

Yes, but most network cards can't atm."Hmmm, I might be wrong but can commercial hard disks even record at 1Gbps ? "
Honestly Canada needs to catch up, why havent these US internet companies expanded up. We are close are a relatively similar. I mean what other direction are they going to go, mexico???
I saw a comercial for somesort of 4g network internet that allows you onto your internet account wirelessly anywhere. That sounds like magic to me!
Anybody else love Google as a business? I only say this after realizing how useful Google Docs is for me.
WHOA. I love Google. Sounds crazy, but if anyone can do it, it's google. That said I live in a rural area and they probably won't cover my area. :X
Any health care problem can be solved by not being poor, so yeah I don't care. Also crime is not a problem when you're not poor either. Oh and politicians tend not to be in your way when you're no- well you get the point." @XII_Sniper: you foolishly leave the greatest country in the world to head to a country for faster internet but worse healthcare system and higher crime rate and much more crooked politicians have fun. Also california is well on it's way to legalizing grass, I can't find Cheez-Its or Cincinnati Chilli in Canada, and hulu.tv doesn't exist here.
That, plus internet that makes streaming games and HD movies actually viable? Buh bye maple leaf flag! Also I barely live in Canada, Toronto is totally segregated culturally from the rest of the country. Oh and we're the capital of the future galactic government, don't you know.
Also Canada is not the greatest country in the world. It's obviously a tie between France and the U.S.A., and anyone who disagrees is a terrorist/nazi.
" @Driadon said:I believe Australia has much more pressing problems than internet speeds...." ...Google come to Canada? Please?? "@Interfect said:" Google needs to come to canada. I want my internet to go vrrrrrroooooooooommmmm "Belive me, Australia need it more then you do, we have a limit on how much we can download. "
As for Canada, internet speeds here are a fickle thing. I live in a small town and I use Shaw High-Speed and I almost never have to buffer HD videos...on the other hand the same service in a larger city like Victoria is noticeably slower. Either way it's about time North America caught up to the rest of the world in regards to connection speeds.
It's only going to be in a very select service area to a relatively small number of people (they said up to 500,000 people). So... the chances that you're going to see it are slim to nil. I'd really like to see Google branch out and offer it on a more global sale though, since they'd be one of the only ISPs without underlying interest in the TV business, and they've got such a huge stake in the internet business that you wouldn't have all the ridiculous limitations on bandwidth and what you are deemed worthy of downloading.
