January 2009 Update - The ratings tool for notifying moderators has been disabled. Negative ratings will no longer hide posts, either. There is a new system in development. I'm leaving this post around though just because I like kitties. - Mike
NEWSFLASH! DO NOT ABUSE THE VOTING TOOLS. JUST BECAUSE YOU DON'T THINK THAT PURPLE GIRAFFES HAVE GIVEN MAJOR CONTRIBUTIONS TO EXISTENTIALISM DOESN'T GIVE YOU GOOD REASON TO DOWN VOTE SOMEONE. IF A PERSON ADEQUATELY SUPPORTS THEIR POSITION CONCERNING PURPLE GIRAFFES OR EXISTENTIALISM, SIMPLY DISAGREE!
WHEN YOU REPORT UNNECESSARY POSTS, YOU ONLY CAUSE PROBLEMS!
I'm pleased to announce that there is a new feature on the forums, a sort of Crowd Moderation/Reporting Tool. The way it works is that the moderators are notified when a post gets a certain number of negative ratings. That number is subject to change, but for now I'll reveal that the number is not very high at all. Once a post gets it's required number of negative ratings, a moderator will be notified to look at it and then he will decide what action to take.
This is an aspect of the site that is vitally important for the community to get involved in, simply because there are so many forums and so few moderators. When there is a bad post...tell us! Reasons to negatively rate a post could be inappropriate images, trolling, spamming, attacking other users, or any other situation where you think a moderator needs to be involved.
To rate, click on the - or + icon in the top right hand corner of the post.
In pictures, here's how the system works:
