Just got a gamecube controller for my Wii. Nuff said really. What should I play... (love weird sh!t, so some rare or unusual titles are encouraged).

The Nintendo GameCube is a sixth generation video game console released by Nintendo on September 15, 2001 in Japan, November 18, 2001 in North America, May 3, 2002 in Europe, and May 17, 2002 in Australia.
Best Ever Gamecube Games
Eternal Darkness, Paper Mario: Thousand Year Door, Pikmin 1 and 2, Wind Waker, MGS: Twin Snakes, Killer 7, Super Mario Sunshine, and Luigi's Mansion.
Weird shit? Killer 7. And Pikmin.
Other stuff?
- Metroid Prime
- Wind Waker
- Resident Evil 4
- Super Mario Sunshine
- Mega Man X Collection (gotta love the classics)
- Super Smash Bros. Melee
EDIT: You also need a memory card if you plan on saving games anytime soon. Also, while I've never played it there's a JRPG called Baiten Kaitos which, if I'm not mistaken, garnered quite a following.
EDIT 2: For RE4, I would actually recommend getting one of the versions on current gen consoles. It's still a great game no matter where you play it, but the current gen ports have all the bells and whistles and an extra campaign.
Tales of Symphonia is both rare and great, as long as you like JRPGs. Also Donkey Kong Jungle Beat is unusual and one of my favorite platformers of all time, but it would require you to buy a new controller. And there is so much more! I hear Cubivore is wierd but I have never actually played it. If i think of any more good ones I will let you know.
Wind Waker
Twilight Princess
Viewtiful Joe
Killer 7
REmake
Eternal Darkness
Paper Mario
Animal Crossing
Beyond Good and Evil
Pikmin
If you like strategy games it wouldn't hurt to try out Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance. It doesn't have some of the same charm as the 2D Fire Emblem games imo, but it was a good attempt at a 2D to 3D transition. Plus, you can transfer your clear data to the Wii sequel, Radiant Dawn, if you feel like continuing in the series.
Favorite Gamecube Games
1. Star Wars: Rogue Squadron II: Rogue Leader The BEST Gamecube launch title. Its a shame that Factor 5 is closed. Maybe another developer will do this game justice in a future iteration.
2. Metal Gear Solid: The Twin Snakes An already great game with the improvements of its successor.
3. Metroid Prime Retro Studios did a wonderful job translating the classic 2D Metroid gameplay into the modern age.
4. Resident Evil 4 Ditching the pre-rendered backgrounds, tank controls and the crappy camera angles of its predecessors RE4 is a new beginning for the modern more action oriented Resident Evil series we have now.
5. The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker This would be #2 if it didn't have the stupid fetch quest at the end. |
Metroid Prime 1&2
Wind Waker
Pikmin 1&2 these are 5 of the best games ever .
Paper Mario : The Thousand-Year Door is pretty amazing , too .
Wind Waker
Mario Sunshine (I personally really enjoyed it, I think I remember a lot of people giving it shit though)
Metroid Prime
I guess these dudes have pretty much covered everything I remember being good that was GC exclusive.
you have a Gamecube memory card too right? You need that too I think even on Wii.
best Gamecube title is Sonic Adventure 2 Battle and maybe F-Zero GX. (logically F-Zero GX should be best at first glance, but the 2 or 3 times I finished the game it always felt 'meh' toward the end, it feels somewhat of a dreary game)

No one here has mentioned P.N.03 I don't think. I don't know if it's any good, but it will probably be the first game I get when I buy a Wii cause it looks really cool.
OH SHIT WHAT WAS THE NAME OF THAT GAME
I REMEMBERED
BRO YOU GOTTA PLAY Metal Arms: Glitch in the System
I never played the whole thing, but the demo was cool as fuck. It's probably really cheap too.
Also Custom Robo was an awesome game.
And if you don't still own a PS2, also pick up Dragon Ball Z: Budokai 2
Oh yeah and a lot of people are going to say to play Metroid Prime, but they rereleased all 3 Metroid Prime games for the Wii as Metroid Prime Trilogy, and I think you can play them all with a gamecube controller, so do that.
And probably don't buy Super Smash Bros. Melee, Just get Super Smash Bros. Brawl. It's kind of overpriced since it's still full price after like 4 years, but the updates from Melee are nice, and there's no real reason to go backwards.

F-Zero GX Wave Race: Blue Storm 1080 Avalanche Mario Golf: Toadstool Tour
Oh man, I have to disagree with Wave Race, I bought that over the summer for $3 when I brought my GameCube away with me on vacation, and I actually went to the trouble of returning it because it didn't hold up, and I didn't find it fun.
I'd also recommend any MLB Slugfest or NFL Blitz game, SSX Tricky and SSX3.
It's not as good as the original Wave Race, but after a slight learning curve, I found it quite enjoyable. It still looks good too.@Claude said:

OH don't forget Super Mario Sunshine, if it hasn't already been mentioned. I know people are going to hate on that game, but it's not bad, and it's one of the rare departures from strict Mario gameplay.

Not playing Paper Mario: Thousand Year Door and Wind Waker is a crime.

Baten Kaitos: Eternal Wings and the Lost Ocean
This plus Baten Kaitos 2, which is just as good as the first with the added benefit of voice-acting that's actually good. They're both excellent jrpgs with really good music.
Throwing in my vote for Wind Waker and Super Mario Sunshine, too.
Wind Waker, Skies of Arcadia, Tales of Symphonia (and if you can zelda 4 swords with 4 players/gbas)
Killer 7 and Eternal Darkness! Hands down my favourite Gamecube games...
-Pikmin 2 (Probably one of my favourite games of all time. I preferred it to the first simply because it didn't have the stupid time mechanic. Both games are great either way)
-Wind Waker. Most people overdo the "fetch quest" near the end. It wasn't THAT bad. The rest of the game is amazing and the graphics still hold up really well (I played it last summer).
- Luigi's Mansion. Short but super fun while it lasts.
- Rogue Squadron 2 and to a lesser extent 3. 2 is amazing, 3 is pretty good other than the ground missions.
- Viewtiful Joe 1 and 2. I still kick myself for selling the first one. They're kinda tricky but a ton of fun.
- Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles - A kinda divisive game but I really liked it. The 4 player with GBAs was insanely fun and I played through the whole game like that with my buddies.
- Tales of Symphonia - One of my all time favourite RPGs. I sunk an obscene amount of time into this game.
- Mario Sunshine - Despite what people say, this is a totally fine and incredibly fun Mario game. I much preferred it to the new Mario Galaxy games.
- Paper Mario and the Thousand Year Door - The sequel to what is likely one of my top 3 games of all time, Paper Mario for the N64. Paper Mario 2 fixed a lot of the issues with the first and definitely stands out as a great RPG.
- F-Zero GX - The sense of speed in that game still hasn't really been matched. I really need to rebuy it as my copy of it was stolen with my first Gamecube.
- Animal Crossing - The OG Animal Crossing is still the best version. You can get NES games in it and I felt it was much better than the sequels. That's not to say I didn't sink a few hundred hours into Wild World for the DS. I only played about 10 hours of City Folk though, it didn't feel all that improved over old versions.
- Super Smash Brother Melee - I don't even want to know how much of this I played with friends and my cousins when they were over. It's probably on the order of thousands of hours. I've done multiple 12 hour sessions of it with friends.

to avoid confusion: what @eternitymemory means with Baten Kaitos 2 is actually called Baten Kaitos: Origins (localized by the 8-4 guys, btw!)

Get the Wii version of RE4 its way better than the gamecube version
if only because it has everything the GCN version had (sharp visuals, GCN pad support) PLUS it has all the PS2 extras AND supports widescreen (and of course the WIi controls but you can still play with a GCN pad)!

it should be noted that Rogue Squadron III: Rebel Strike has most(?) of the singleplayer missions from Rogue Leader included as a bonus cooperative mode for 2 players splitscreen! just played that again tonight :) those games still look pretty damn good, also!

This one is gonna be a little far fetched but if you get 3 friends 4 GBAs, 4 GBA link cables, and a copy of Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicals I do not think you will be disappointed.
if you don't wanna go through that for just one game there is also The Legend of Zelda: Four Swords Adventures and Pac-Man Vs. that support this and are great fun! (the latter being basically an inspiration for what they demoed on the Wii U last E3 as "Chase Mii")

Whoops! I completely forgot that the more recent BK game's actually a prequel. My bad. It's been a long while since I actually had a Gamecube to play on.
Since I'm making another post I'm also going to tentatively suggest Sonic Adventure 2: Battle Mode. I don't know how you feel about where the quality decline in Sonic began, but I had loads of fun with SA2. Granted, I was still in elementary school when I played it, so yeah.
Also Tales of Symphonia is another great jrpg that I played over countless times.
