Has anyone read anywhere that the 360 version is going to be visually reduced, be it by compressing art assets or limiting the draw distance?   I have my 360 copy preordered with Amazon, but if there is a distinct difference between the two versions, I’ll change my order to the PS3 version.

No idea. Theres multiple comparisons out there, but some of them show the 360 as considerably better looking, and others show the PS3 considerably better looking, and others show them looking almost the same.

PS3 was lead platform, although that doesn't mean that the 360 will be gimped in any way.  If there are going to be differences though, the PS3 version will likely be the one that fares better.

So get the PS3 version unless there are reasons for you other than performance that you care about, like achievement points.

Well other than the whole disk swapping thing, I don't think the differences will be majorly noticeable. Still if you have a PS3, might as well get that one for the sheer convenience of it. I don't mind a disk swap, but three is pretty fucking crazy. That's why I played a lot more N64 games instead of whatever 10-disk odysseys Square was making for the playstation.

I can't see there being much of a difference to be honest. The only reason I am getting it for 360 is because I find the controller more comfortable. But I do use my 360 more than my ps3 so it's just preference.

Was there any difference between Red Dead Redemption on the Xbox and PS3 ? Unless of course the PS3 wasn't RDR's lead platform, if that is the case please disregard my ignorance.

From another thread of someone indecisive on pre-ordering particular versions there was some screen comparisons & seems that the 360 version has a bit more contrast but not enough to really drive people away in droves. Seems the only real bad thing about the 360 version is multiple discs but if the gameplay stays on 1 disc for a considerable time before changing I think most people will be okay with having to switch discs (over the area being so freaking big that instead of splitting the content into acts among the discs it's by sections in the world so opening some doors will cause a disc swap).

Apparently just doing story and nothing else it takes 6 hours for disc 1.

No, hence the 3 discs. It'll be fine, unless you listen to the PS3 fanboys, in which case the 360 version will look like it was on the N64.

Well, as the developer has said, it's much easier to start development on the PS3, and then port it to 360, because the architecture of the PS3 is so complicated that leading with the 360 and porting to the PS3 can create all sorts of graphical and performance problems. So they developed with the PS3 as the lead platform so that both versions would be pretty much equal. The only difference is that DVDs only take up so much space, and Blurays can carry a lot more, so naturally the 360 version is going to be on three DVDs, and the PS3 version is going to be on one Bluray.

This is a Rockstar game, if you're coming to it for the graphics you're playing for the wrong reason.  Go with the copy that makes the most sense.  Nowadays it seems far more likely for there to be some sort of weird technical issue on one system rather than one looking far worse, and this is nothing anybody can tell without playing the game.

Is anything but TOTAL fucking bullshit. The actual assets will probably be equal, because even a Bluray won't have much room left for uncompressed assets. And we have figured out that the two consoles are capable of pretty much exactly the same shit, so they should be the same in gameplay.

I actually think it's a good thing that they choose to ship the game on 3 disks instead of compressing the hell out of the assets.

That said, I'm getting the PS3 version.

This on both points. It insures the 360 will stand equal in quality. If I had the 360 only I would simply consider myself lucky I could play the game.

All I know is that the PS3 version was being developed first, but I'm sure both versions are comparable. The only thing the 360 has against it is the whole disc swapping thing.

Numerous HD streams of the 360 version were up this weekend and it looked identical to the PS3 media Rockstar has released. No telling what a comparison from like Digital Foundry or something could turn up, but to the naked eye there aren't any noticeable differences.

found 2 gameplay videos from the opening of the game if people want to compare game play

also early game SPOILERS for those who care.

    ps3
    360

other then the normal crushed blacks on the 360 and the lighter tone on ps3 there isnt much you can tell.

To me it looks like maybe the ps3 version has better SSAO (look at the corners of boxes and where walls meet the ground) but its hard to tell since the ps3 video is a pretty compressed and was probably recorded from a stream where as 360 video was probably recored from the console.

Still its better then comparing Promo videos to the finished game.

game looks great on both platforms.

Funny how in terms of storage it was the complete opposite back then. At most N64 cartridges could hold 64MB compare to the Playstation's CD weight of 700MB or so.

I think the reason this topic keeps coming up was how janky the PS3 version of RDR was. Curious to see if the PS3 is the actual superior platform, but in cases like this I get the impression the difference is going to be very minimal.

Oh I played them (regrettably, only Chrono Cross was phenomenal), but I played a hell of a lot more cartridge games in that era. They still made sense. It wasn't until games got as big as Dreamcast games that a disk made real sense. The cutscenes and redbook audio took all the space on square's multi-cd games, it was unnecessarily frivolous, and I think returning to that standard is annoying. Especially when for years a multi-CD PC game would just install, and only require the play disk, something the xbox 360 has been able to do for a while (like with forza) but for whatever reason hasn't been doing with the recent multi-disk games.

If LA Noire just had a three disk install option, that would be attractive. Either way disk swapping isn't a huuge deal, it's just a minor step back, and seems a bit unnecessary in a world of hard drives and digital distribution platforms.

My question is, would you ever notice in the first place? haha When I buy a game, then go see the same game on my buddy's PS3, it either looks exactly the same or slightly "different". Not better or worse, just different. Like comparing John Romita Sr. to John Romita Jr. haha

The review fact sheet for the 360 one says you will only have to swap discs twice at natural breaks between cases, whatev that means. It's not going to be the second half of Star Ocean 4: Last Hope 360 so give "hurr discswapping" a break.

The review fact sheet for the 360 one says you will only have to swap discs twice at natural breaks between cases, whatev that means. It's not going to be the second half of Star Ocean 4: Last Hope 360 so give "hurr discswapping" a break.
I forgot about that. Talk about disc swapping done completely wrong.
