I have not seen Citizen Kane, so know how good it was cinematography wise. But, the themes in both seem the same.

No. A game where you go around and shoot stuff isn't Citizen Kane, and the fact that gaming's counter to Citizen Kane is a game where you go around and shoot stuff shows just how limited the medium really is.

Isn't Michael Thomsen no longer with IGN?

Anyway, some of the points he makes are really strange and out there. This was a shameless news piece that was trying so hard to make the assertion that these two mediums are 100% analogous or that each is the golden standard of its respective medium. People have different preferences, so don't flip out people, but it was drawing really strange comparisons. I hope that the schlocky "don't care about games" people who see this piece on World News and have a Wii might finally pick up a game and make their own opinions as a result of this. Metroid Prime is a good choice I suppose, but I certainly get the impression that it was only chosen because these ludicrous connections can be made.

It's an interesting comparison, and an interesting choice, certainly.  I don't necessarily agree with it, but with the separate trajectories that films and video games have taken, identifying any single game as the equivalent to Citizen Kane seems like a more speculative endeavor than one that could ever be definitive.

Positive (though maybe hyperbolic) real media press for a trilogy of stellar games. Why am I supposed to be outraged again?

I sorta, kinda, get the relation their trying to make.
While Prime had a great combination of adventure exploration with shooting, it was not the first game to combine the elements exclusively.

Regardless it's still quite the stretch of logic.

The points he brings up makes it seem like he doesn't really get why Citizen Kane is so highly respected. He mostly states that the reason Metroid Prime is the Citizen Kane of video games is because it shares similar themes. But that's not why the film is put up on such a high pedestal. Citizen Kane revolutionized the way movies are made and Orson Wells was ahead of his time. I don't really think there can be a "Citizen Kane" of video games because there are so many more things that go on in a video game that there will never be one game that can some how be used as a baseline for all games.

Metroid Prime (1) is a great game, but it can hardly be considered a "Citizen Kane" of gaming, because of the way that the industry works. There might be Citizen Kanes of the period (I cite Ocarina of Time and Resident Evil 4 as "Citizen Kanes" of their respective time periods), but Metroid Prime is hardly that either.

This is just a personal opinion.

But comparing a film to a game isn't the best of comparisons anyway.

Something like Heavy Rain, or Fable were the main focus isn't combat would be better for showing were the medium is.

Gaming's Citizen Kane is probably Mario Bros. or Ocarina of Time or maybe Half Life.  When they say Citizen Kane they don't mean a game that has the same impact as the movie story-wise or anything like that, they just mean a game that people will look back on decades later as a masterpiece of the medium.

Well, Michael Thompson's options about games are very strange. I've heard him talk about certain games on podcasts, and they're quite different than most others.

This is definitely true. He called Wii Sports Resort better than Halo. It's not his opinion that I value in his writing at all though.
