    NBA Elite 11

Game » consists of 2 releases. Released Nov 05, 2010

EA's renamed basketball simulation set for an October 2010 release was cancelled at the last minute due to concerns over quality. The game was intended to introduce brand new control concepts and mechanics meant to innovate on the simulation basketball genre.

The next NBA Live won't be called NBA Live. EA Sports is discarding the moniker, which has been used since the mid-90s with the release of NBA Live '95, in what's likely to be an attempt to shake the baggage of several poor releases and to signal that 2011's title is something of a kick in the pants for the annual underperformer. The new name? NBA Elite.

The change was teased on the franchise's Facebook page earlier this week and was confirmed to Official Xbox Magazine, as well as Kotaku, recently. In a statement to Kotaku, EA Sports touched on what is to come and why the change: "We knew it was time to leave the past behind. We have exciting and significant changes coming to our NBA game this year that will usher in the future of basketball videogames," a rep said. "We look forward to releasing information on exactly how we'll be doing that over the next few months."

The Elite series will kick off with NBA Elite 11--a basketball game that will, apparently, "usher in the future of basketball videogames." I'll be wearing my special mind-blow-protector-hat-thing in preparation for the game's reveal. Hopefully, that'll be at E3. (It tends to chafe.)

I've always loved the NBA Live franchise because basketball was always the only sport that I could get into. Should be interesting to see what other changes are made aside from the name.

As the one non-dissenting annoying poster, I have to say I am excited to see EA shaking up LIVE.  I have liked 2K but 2k10 was an extremely sloppy product and the game hasn't made any major strides in probably the last 3 years.  The talk of physics based basketball instead of canned animations has me super excited but we'll see if they can pull it off.  EA did it with the NHL series but basketball is a much more complex sport to try that with.

I hope they pull it off.

@GrilledCheez01: I wouldn't say all the NBA Live games sucked. I really enjoyed playing NBA Live 2000 with my brother, and the latest NBA Live was very good compared to the glitchy NBA 2K10.

NBA 2k11 might have Michael Jordan on the cover. But the article I read was not sure if he would be playable. If he wasn't, that would be kind of dumb if you ask me.

Heh. I was thinking the same thing. I have no problem with the series starting at 95, but NBA Elite 11 does not sound like the start of a new series "that will usher in the future of basketball videogames". It sounds like a series that has been ushering in the future for the past 10 years, and everyone's grown tired of ushering in the future and doesn't care about the series any more.

Changing the name isnt gonna just miraculously make it better then the 2K series. Maybe EA can finally get it right this time, but I doubt it seeing has they only tried 5 other times on the next gen consoles and failed, well 5 on the 360 at least.

No.  They should focus on making a pure follow-up to SSX 3 AS WELL AS focus harder on the NBA Street franchise.

But yes - 2K trampled any other NBA games a long time ago.  EA should just give up and admit defeat.

NBA Live is too massive of a brand to leave.  NBA Elite will stick around for 2 or 3 years then they'll go right back to Live in order to capitalize on a  "returning to our roots"  marketing campaign.

I think I speak for more than just myself when I say that I was perfectly fine with the old GiantBomb, but when you think about it, it makes sense. GB has always had a loyal following because of great stuff like the BombCast and Quick Looks rather than covering every single new game, but I wouldn't be surprised if management (Whiskey Media) is pushing for more mainstream coverage on par with major outlets like GameSpot and IGN. And they can only do that by hiring more staff for the relatively small editorial team.

In the end, it will be interesting to see comparable Whiskey sites covering most forms of modern media - GB for games, Screened for movies, Tested for electronics, and AnimeVice and ComicVine for, well, anime/manga and comics.

    @TwoOneFive:

    Agreed.

It would also be nice if the play by play announcing isn't cheap. Hearing the same thing over and over is damn annoying. Yeah, I know it would be "expensive" but developers can't turn a profit if now effort is put into a game. Well, they can but if they want to give the 2K franchise a run for their money, resources will HAVE to be put into all aspects of the game.

Tightening? How about they actually make one lol. Last one I remember was NBA Street Homecourt like 3 years ago. But yes, I do agree with you, they should in all honesty just bring it back and make it all it can be. I miss that franchise. Speaking of which I miss all the EA Sports Big titles. Right now seems like the perfect time to release some 'extreme' variation of a sport seeing as how there's absolutely none on the market.

I don't think I knew anyone who actually hated NBA Street. Hell, I'm not a basketball fan at all and I loved it.

I loved NBA Live 95.  People may not remember what basketball games were like before it, but EA changed the game.  Plays actually worked, players had moves that didn't look cartoony,  stats really mattered and oh yeah, a player no other team had-Shaq!  I added Shaq to the Lakers years before it really happened.

The problem is that the game pretty much peaked in 1997.  Since then the competition has continually been better.

I think it's a stupid name and they should just use NBA Live as it has a long history.

This edit will also create new pages on Giant Bomb for:

Beware, you are proposing to add brand new pages to the wiki along with your edits. Make sure this is what you intended. This will likely increase the time it takes for your changes to go live.
