This was a very thoughtful analysis and retrospective. Great read. Bravo, sir.

I'm tempted to try your approach myself and see if it elicits the same reaction for me. I also could not agree more with your thoughts on the moral choice games in early Bioware games. I remember being struck with the same thought when I first started KOTOR, and all the "evil" options felt more sadistic and psychopathic then  the "cleverly sinister" approach that I desired.

Didn't notice this until Napalm pointed out. I stand by my thought, but I'm totally in favor of locking this thread down.

" She has a point.  It's meant to be game where you can create characters with the purpose of playing them online.  To not have any female build capability is insulting when games have a much broader demographic break these days.  Shame on Splash Damage. "
This. This is everything I was going to say summed up better then I could've put it. In a game where the aim is to create an Avatar meant to represent yourself, nothing can really excuse eliminating an entire demographic.

Shame indeed.

Wow. Capcom trolled Twisted Pixel. I'm not terribly worried about this though.... mostly because it looks awful. Its like if 'Splosion Man was made in a ingenuity vacuum.

Much like yourself, Deadly Premonition. I didn't think for a second I'd actually purchase the thing when they started the Endurance Run, but it didn't take long until I wanted to try my own hand at being Francis York Morgan

" This is definitely EA. They seem to have a something against Steam...you can pre-order Dead Space 2 and Mass Effect 3 (!) from Direct 2 Drive, yet neither of those games are even mentioned on Steam at the moment. "
I've observed this as well. Most EA titles on Steam also do not carry over achievements from the 360 or windows live counterparts. I'm not much of an achievement buff myself, but its one other aspect I've seen EA cut corners on, most recently with Hot Pursuit. "
There are many, many more developers and publishers other than EA that release games on Steam without Steam achievements. Hell, most PC games, in general, still ship without any kind of achievements at all. I wouldn't exactly call that cutting corners. "
A fair point. The point I was trying to make is that now that Steam offers an achievement system, some developers are starting to copy over the 360 achievement equivalents. EA has yet to do the same.

You are correct , though- I reascend the accusation. To call that "cutting corners" in PC distribution is very unfair.

" Pretty pissed about this.  There's a reason I like Steam.  It's the best digital distribution service.  I like having all my games in one place, easily accessible.    I've already got a bunch of games lined up, this time I think I'll wait for all the DLC to come out and get packaged together.  I've been getting boned on that lately, and I'm getting sick of it. "
Hey, Ditto!  It drives me insane.

Completely agreed on the perks of Steam. When my  last computer ate it about a year ago, it was comforting to know all my games would be available to download once I re-installed steam.

Its really irksome to see things like retailer specific content and pre-order bonuses cropping up everywhere, and EA is a major offender. As a developer, I think I would actually be offended to see some of the content I designed and worked on getting withheld from the public as some sort of "carrot-on-a-stick" incentive. I'm sure it isn't quite so simple as EA holding back already implemented items, but I still find the practice  insulting to both developers and the audience its being marketed to.

I sometimes wonder- if publishers feel it is necessary to withhold content or promise perks as a means to justify early purchases, is it indicative that the pre-order business model itself isn't working and is in need of an overhaul?

Almost every major combat sequence in Mafia 2.

The game itself isn't amazing, but the characters and atmosphere are interesting enough to where I enjoy it... most of the time. Where it all falls apart are the bizarre moments the game decides to auto-save. You can shoot your way through a whole warehouse, take 340 bullets to 18 different body parts, and walk out just fine. But while driving Joe to his goddamn hair salon appointment or where the hell ever, you suffer a fatal car accident as a result of some crazy truck driver.

When the game loads, you're back at the front door of the warehouse, being told its time to do the whole shootout over again. Why wasn't there a save after getting in the car with Joe exactly? Or in the second room of a four room shootout? This issue is obviously not as bad on lower difficulties, but on hard It makes me feel like I'm being punished for all the wrong reasons.

Its worth noting that you don't actually take Joe to a hair salon- you just have to drive him around more then you should have to, which brings me to my other frustration with the game- unnecessary chauffeuring scenes . Let me put it this way: remember the part in Inception where after every day of training, you watched the team go home, brush their teeth, and get ready for bed? No, you don't, because the filmmakers know that stuff is boring as hell and should only be included if there's some sort of narrative information or character quirk to be discovered in showing it.

In short, Video Games! Only make me drive people to their appointments or drive myself home if there is something important you need to show me. In a sandbox game, at least give me the option to skip the driving if I'm only going from Point A to Point B with no risk of interruption. If I want to go rob a store or start a crime spree rivaling the St. Valentines Day Massacre, I'll refuse your prompt and go do it.

Sunset Riders, especially since the damn thing is sitting on my hard drive but still has yet to be released.
