why do you people STILL LIKE MILITARY SHOOTERS

Ok, so, I've enjoyed plenty of Mil shooters in my time; I played a smattering of BC2, I have about 30 hours of black ops clocked on steam, but... Why are there still fans of this style of shooter? Haven't they been done to death? I'm more excited for Overstrike, or Far Cry 3, way more excited, than BF3 and MW3 (and i have a good enough computer to play BF3, so shut up) There's only so much you can do with that tired, old genre. I watched the MW3 trailer during the microsoft presser, and while it had a lot of quick, "exciting" camera shots and world war, it's still generic looking. I then watched the BF3, and that looked even more boring! and I even saw some of the multiplayer and it looked pretty much the same. Like, do men love war and the military that much? and I know other PC gamers are excited for BF3 for purely "WOW THIS GAME IS COMPUTER FOCUSED" reasons, but why should that matter? (I am a PC gamer myself)

Sci-fi shooters are pretty boring too, but at least there's an easy way to spice those ones up (you ever play the precursors? that's a pretty cool sci-fi stalker-esque game) I really don't see how military shooters can progress anymore. THOUGHTS?

I don't care that the games are military, what I don't like is that its all about the macho killer dudes that come out without a scratch and become heroes.

What I wish they would do is make a military shooter that focuses on the very terrifying parts of actual war, you know, the holy-fucking-jesus-everyone-is-dying part where you're having trouble moving due to all the shit in your pants.

Because being a cog in the big war machine is pretty awesome. Don't have to be military, but it has to be grand and consisting of more than "you're the lone hero against an army". I prefer being in the army than fighting one alone.

I still find them entertaining to play, so I'll keep playing them until I don't have fun with them anymore. It's not something I analyze.

There is only so many genres of games out there. Yes, people will combine some stuff but your options are limited. When you like shooters and the only thing being put out is military themed ones then that is what you play.

You know what's way worse?  People who still like JRPG's.

I mean yeah, Military shooters haven't really advanced much in the last 4 years or so, (since COD4 came out), but shit, JRPG's have just gotten gradually worse and worse since Final Fantasy VI, and that was almost 20 years ago.  But whatever, people like what they like and I respect that.

You know what I hate more than anything?  Assholes who think that people should like or dislike whatever games that they like or dislike.  In my opinion, those people show absolutely ZERO understanding of video games or what make them so great as a medium of entertainment.

I'm getting tired of the genre, but the best console shooters out at the moment happen to be modern military shooters. Nothing has really topped the Modern Warfare, or Battlefield games as far as competitive, multiplayer gameplay goes. If someone puts out a game that has a different setting (maybe Sci-Fi), and it's just as mechanically sound as Modern Warfare, or Battlefield. Then I'll be glad to play it, but at this point nothing has really come along that's better. I mean, there's Resistance, Killzone, and Halo, but I just don't think any of those games feel as good as MW, or Battlefield.

Long story short, I play these modern military shooters because they play better than anything else. Not because I like their setting better. In fact, I'll take Sci-Fi, or something cartoony like Team Fortress 2 over shooting at Arabs any day of the week... If the actually gameplay is just as good.

I'm not too enthusiastic about single player based shooters, but when it comes to Battlefield 3, the answer is simple

I played Battlefield 2. The greatest competitive shooter experience ever crafted.. I'm sure you know what's fun about a competitive online shooter with big maps and jets and vehicles and all kinds of action variety and location diversity, so i won't describe why the game is great.

Battlefield 1942 / Battlefield 2 exist. We played them. We (BF fans) consider them the most mindblowing and fun competitive games ever made.. Battlefield 3 can't get here soon enough <3

For multiplayer... who cares really, it's just textures. It's not like most of these 'military shooters' even make any effort at all to try and represent military combat; it's just dudes running around all over the place, that just happen to be dressed as soldiers. Would it suddenly become a fresher or better experience if it was dudes running around all over the place dressed as something else?

For single player, the problem isn't so much that they use a military setting, but that so many of them boil it down to an experience which is barely interactive at all. Battlefield 3 could be great if they are prepared to gradually wean the player off of the hand holding bullshit and get them to a point where they can just be put into an open-map scenario with their team, hand them some objectives and tell them to get it done. You know, like games used to do sometimes before they all became movies.

That's not really fair.  You don't fight the exact same way, with the exact same weapons, in the exact same environment with every game that features a dragon.

people like the genre. it's pretty much timeless. It's fast arcade action in a form that's easy to understand. Why do people still like fantasy RPGs? Why do people still like action adventure clones? I don't begrudge people their CoDs. I don't even hate people who play the same RPG regurgitated gruel over and over. plenty of good games for everyone.

True story: In my almost 20 years of gaming, I've never bought a military FPS. In fact, I've only actually ever played one once--I was at a friend's apartment with a couple of guys and we were playing...something, I don't know which one...while pre-gaming.

Thing is, I don't really hate FPSs that much. It's just the "realistic" setting does not appeal to me in any way.

Military stuff regardless of medium, context etc will always be popular, it just so happens contemporary military stuff remains particularly popular.  I imagine this next wave (mw3, bf3 and so on) will be the last big spike in the sub-genres all encompassing universal appeal.  Even the dood-bros will want something new to dood-bro about eventually.  I've never really liked them myself in any capacity, played enough to know it just doesn't interest me so I look forward to the next big easily marketable thing but at the same time I'm not bothered that this one is still a thing.  Just watch and see how many of them bomb in the market, I doubt even bf3 will do the numbers Dice think it will.

Agreed. Military shooters are so last season. Don't people realize that genres are only good until they're obsolete? Military shooters are totally post-trendy. It's like wearing Givenchy when hello, today's all about Manolo. And don't even get me started on Japanese developers and their insistence on characters having white shoes in games released after Labor Day...

The military shooter has been done to death. That is not an opinion.

I would be happy if no military shooters came out ever again. That way, developers could be creative.

Sure, you can ask the same question about any other genre, but no other genre has been done so much.

They aren't by default bad games. Modern Warfare is though, at least the singleplayer is about anything that I dislike in a videogame. But you have to keep in mind, teenagers like to play war. Before there even were videogames. Now, there is a neverending stream of teenagers, because people reproduce eh. For that reason people stay interested in military shooters (I HOPE, it would disturb me if the same people play these type of games over and over... and over).

YES. want this game

as far as what you people meant, I just meant the people who still liked them. and liking them for the multiplayer is fair enough (even if I think you're crazy, but that's just opinion), also capital letters are still a threat
